Clearly, this does NOT make sense. Mary SMITH must have been their daughter-in-law, married to a son of John and Esther ROPER. Elijah ROPER, shown to be age 9, seems likely to be the child shown in the English Civil Registration Index as Simeon Elijah ROPER, whose birth was registered at Downham District, Cambridgeshire / Norfolk during June Quarter 1840 [Volume 13, Page 73]. It would appear that Frederick and Elijah ROPER's father died between 1840 and 1851.

The given name "Stanley" MIGHT BE linked to the ROPERs of Hollingborne, Kent. Moreover, the naming patterns of the son -- William, Thomas, Edmund, Joseph, Samuel ... -- is reminiscent of names found in the ROPER family in Kent and in Norfolk/Suffolk. Is anyone aware of the Irish origins of Stanley ROPER? Is anyone acquainted with descendants of Stanley ROPER?? I've been told that a Jesse Parr son of Claborn of SC was married to a Nancy Ivey before he left SC. In the 1870 Pickens Co., AL census, some of the children are left in the household with a newly added girl child named Ella age 8. I'm assuming that Jesse and Catharine died during the war years. By the 1880 census their son James Thomas Parr is married to Elmina Strickland of Pickens Co., Wm "Bill" Leroy Parr is married to Martha Ella Whatley daughter of W. Francis M. and Hixsey Whatley of Pickens Co. , Jesse Jr is living in the household of Rebecca Barham and later marrys the daughter Jemimah/ Jenny Barham of Pickens Co., a Ruthie E. Parr is a cook at the Poor farm in Pickens Co. (I believe she's Ruthie Ellen Parr born between James and William). From what I've seen the Jesse Parr son of Claborn Parr of SC was born in 1802 which d! oes consist with this Jesse W. Parr in Pickens Co., AL.. In the 1900 census James Thos. and William "Bill" Leroy Parr moved their families into Fayette Co., AL... Bill is buried at Old Union Cemetery in Fayette Co., AL.......

I WOULD note that the 1850 Census record shows Catherine PARR to be age 28 (b abt 1822 - VA). And, as you point out, she is enumerated adjacent to the Census record of R. W. ROPER in Pickens, AL. Jesse and Catherine PARR's eldest child Elizer is shown to be age 12 suggesting that Catherine married Jesse about 1837 when Catherine was about 15. Accordingly, we would expect Catherine to already be enumerated within Jesse PARR's household in 1840 and to have been in her father's household at about age 8 in 1830. * Jesse and Catherine PARR's 1860 Census record shows Catherine to be age 40 (b abt 1820). Daughter Elizabeth is shown to be age 21 that year. All of the children are shown to have been born in Alabama. Jesse's date of birth is at least a little more consistent. He is shown to have been age 48 in 1850 and age 58 in 1860. And he is shown to have been born in South Carolina. * As I popinted out in my previous Posts, Randolph ROPER is known to have died 06 Aug 1822 - James City County, VA. ROPER" household is probably Catherine and that it is most likely that she was the daughter of Randolph and Ann ROPER rather than Randolph W. ROPER and Martha Ann EPPES. Please bear in mind that this is a SPECULATIVE ascription based only upon the information described above AND YOUR ASSERTION that there is family lore to the effect that Catherine PARR was a ROPER. If we could pin down Catherine's precise date of birth with greater precision, we could make a somewhat stronger inference. I am unaware as to whether there exists any probate information from James City County showing the identities of Randolph ROPER's children. I haven't researched this line particularly extensively. Nor am I familiar with any probate information for Randolph W. ROPER or other members of his family. Do you know WHEN and WHERE Catherine PARR died? Also, can you tell us anything further regarding Jesse PARR, his origins and what became of him after 1860?

BALL, also in his household. This might be Dandridge BALL's father, but this is a speculative ascription. Also adjacent to Samuel BALL is a Thomas A. SMITH, age 29, and Lucy A. SMITH, age 29, with a child Mary S. SMITH. Recall that Mary Jane ROPER, had a sister named Lucy Ann ROPER who was born before 1826. Also recall that Edward ROPER's sister Mildred ROPER married a Thomas SMITH. In searching for what became of Lucy Ann ROPER, one might want to check the records of this SMITH family. * In 1860, Dandridge BALL, age 47, is still residing in Henrico, with his new wife Sarah E., age 25, and their child Robert H. There is also shown a Susan TRICE, age 34, who appears very possibly to be the SAME individual shown in Dandridge BALL's household in Charles City County (below). The Samuel BALL household was enumerated on 15 Aug 1860. In 1870, Dandridge and Sarah E. BALL, age 57 and 35, respectively, were residing with son Robert H. David ROPER had a daughter named Lucy ROPER who married William HEWLETT on 06 May 1797. Edward ROPER (b abt 1781 – Charles City, VA, d 09 Feb 1826 – Charles City, VA), son of David ROPER (d 1808), seems to have had at least two daughters, Lucy Ann ROPER and Mary Jane ROPER. These two are identified in a number of probate transactions following their father's death. James Ross ROPER, who appears to have been the son of Benjamin ROPER, seems to have possibly been involved in the upbringing of Edward ROPER's orphaned children, just as Edward ROPER seems to have been involved in the upbringing of the children of his uncle Benjamin ROPER (d abt 1786). It seems unlikely that this would have been Lucy Ann ROPER, daughter of Edward ROPER, as there is a transaction on 05 Apr 1826 to purchase shoes for that Lucy A. ROPER. I am inclined therefore to believe that Lucy Ann ROPER, daughter of Edward ROPER, was at least a few years old by 1826. The most obvious answer is that the Lucy A. ROPER in R. W. ROPER's household was his daughter. I am inclined to believe that R. W. ROPER was Randolph William ROPER (b abt 1803 - James City, VA, d aft 1850 - Prob AL), son of Randolph ROPER and grandson of Benjamin ROPER (d abt 1786 - Charles City County, VA). Randolph William ROPER married Martha Ann EPPES, daughter of Francis EPPES, on 18 JUL 1822 at Prince George, Virginia. The date of birth of Apr 1825 is taken from Lucy Ann Roepr EVANS' 1900 Census record. The date of death is taken from a secondary source, but it appears likely to be reliable.

He seems to first appear in the tax lists about 1782-87 according to Fothergill's Virginia Taxpayers 1782-1787 lists. He seems to be shown in the list with ZERO white males age 21 to 50 and ZERO slaves. [Someone with a keen interest in this family may want to look at EACH of teh ORIGINAL Charles City County tax lists from this interval to ascertain precisely in which lists Randolph ROPER appears. The other ROPERs shown in the tax lists during this period are Benjamin ROPER, David ROPER and Samuel ROPER. Randolph ROPER is almost certainly NOT the son of David ROPER (b 1744, d 1808), whose sons are well identified in deeds of gift in 1804 and his 1808 Will. The first probate records from enjamin ROPER's estate appear in June 1786. David ROPER is shown to be the executor. Charles City County tax lists for 1787 seem to show (wm16-21, b>16, b0-16, horses, cattle): David Roper: 0 - 4 - 7 - 4 - 26 Saml. Roper: 0 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 6 Mary Roper :1 - 1 - 0 - 2 - 10 Mary ROPER seems to be Benjamin ROPER's widow. There is one white male age 16 to 21 shown in her household. This MIGHT HAVE BEEN Randolph ROPER. It appears that Benjamin and Mary ROPER also had a son Benjamin ROPER (b abt 1776-78 - Charles City, VA). Randoph ROPER next appears in the records in Cumberland County, where he served as a wittness to the marriage of James ROPER to Molly SIMS, daughte rof Benjamin SIMS, on 26 Jan 1793. This James ROPER seems most likely to be a brother or cousin of Randolph ROPER. Later the same year -- Sep 1793 - Randolph ROPER was one of the signers of a petition by residents of James City County to the Governor and Council demanding the immediate execution of a woman who had killed her overseer. In 1797, Randolph ROPER gave a bond in support of the purchase of the ninety acre Charles City plantation by Benjamin ROPER Jr. from the estate of Benjamin ROPER, deceased. It seems most likely that Benjamin ROPER Jr. (b abt 1776-78 - Charles City County) was Benjamin and Mary ROPER's son and a younger brother of Randolph ROPER. See Dr. L. The eldest female in the household is shown to be age 50 to 59 (b abt 1771-80) and is presumably Randolph ROPER's widow. The IGI suggests to us that the son is probably the Randolph ROPER shown in this marriage record: Randolph ROPER m Martha Ann EPPES on 18 JUL 1822 -Prince George, Virginia A secondary source reporting to the IGI shows a Randolph ROPER (b 1761 - VA, d 06 AUG 1822). This information is generally consistent with what is shown above. These records also show Randolph ROPER's widow to be named "Ann". I am unacquainted with the information supporting this ascription. The son Randolph William ROPER seems to have migrated to Pickens, Alabama by 1840. He is enumerted in the Census as "R. W. ROPER". R. W. The originals remain with the court materials being processed, but photocopies are made and are indexed in this database. Ragland containing fifty acres and that portion of lands purchased by me from Edward Roper’s estate which lies on the west side of a line to be laid off from the main road, commencing where the fence now meets the road, and running south to Robert Hubbard’s Corner to him and his heirs forever. I also give and bequeath to my son the following slaves to wit: Rico, Randolph, Minerva, Betsy and son John and my sorrel mare and sorrel coult (sic) two years old, my new saddle and bridle and one bed and furniture, all to him and his heirs forever. ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son Robert P. Eppes the plantation on which I now live called and known by the name of Spring Field, the tract devised to my son James now considered part of my home tract is of course excepted. It is unclear why she is shown as a "Boarder" in the 1900 Census record. One possibility that must NOT be discounted is the possibility that Bettie G., shown to be age 7 and born Jan 1893, and Vergie, shown to be age 16 in 1910 are one and the same child. Given the appearance of other errors in the 1900 Census record this does NOT seem to be far fetched.
