    1. Mention of Hurricane Damage To William ROPER's Charleston Wharf in the Virginia Gazette on 26 Jul 1770
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Gadsden, Russel, Russell, Rose, Wragg, Price, Bee, Luther, Summers, Craft, Tucker, Izard, Villeponteoux, Roberts, Tyler Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/805 Message Board Post: The Thursday, July 26, 1770, edition of the Virginia Gazette, as printed by Mr. Rind, gives a report from Charleston regarding extensive damage from a gale (which seems likely to have been a hurricane), including damage to the wharf of William ROPER, Esq. (d 14 Feb 1772 - Charleston, SC). The article, appearing on page 1 of that edition of the Virginia Gazette is fairly long. I am furnishing a transcription of only a small portion of that article as it pertains to William ROPER's wharf. Those with an interest in the hurricane may want to obtain a copy of this issue themselves: "June 7. Yesterday, last night and this day, we had a most violent storm of wind and rain here, that ever was known in this remarkably calm season of the year. It began yesterday [Wednesday, 06 Jun 1770] about ten o'clock, and continued till this evening, the wind varying, frequently from the E. N. E., to the S. S. E. The utmost violence of the gale was observed to be from two to four in the morning; when, according to the common course, the tide should have been the lowest; else the swell, that must have been thrown into the harbour, would probably have overflowed the greater part of the town. It is yet impossible to ascertain all the damages that have been sustained along the sea coast, and throughout the country; but if we may judge, from what appeared here this morning, it must be very considerable. The following, however, is as particular an account of the accidents that happened, as a certain affecting family circumstance has permitted us to give, from our own obs! ervation; in describing which, we hope our readers will excuse us for using so many tautologies as may occur, in relating a variety of incidents arising from one and the same cause, so that a sameness must, in a great measure, run through the whole. To begin at the northernmost pasrt of the town: Mr. Gadsden's wharf there, though so extensive and yet ?????, did not receive the least damage! A proof of its firmness and good construction. Mr. Russell's received as little. The southernmost corner of Mr. Rose's was beat down by a schooner which drove and beat against it. Mrs. Wragg's received no injury. Mr. Price's suffered a good deal of damage, both from the swell of the sea, and several small vessels striking against it. A schooner belonging to Thomas Bee, Esq., was drove almost as high as the curtain line, where another smaller one had her stern beat in. .. [numerous other omitted accounts ] The head of William Roper, Esquire's, wharf was carried away; the sloop Dove, George Luther, master, loaded and ready to sail for Jamaica, was driven from thence upon the fortification, where she suffered much in her bottom, and had six feet of water in her hold. In the dock, a schooner belonging to Capt. George Summers, drove almost to the curtain line, having two breaches made in her bottom; Mr. Robert Craft's schooner had her stern and bow beat in; the Hon. Henry Middleton's had one quarter stove; the Sally, Capt. Tucker, was much damaged; John Izard, Esquire's, had one quarter of her whole broadside destroyed; and one belonging to Zacariah Villeponteoux, Esq., was beat to pieces. The front wall and whole fortification between Granville's and Boughton's bastions, are entirely ruined; the repairs of which, it is supposed, cannot cost less than 20,000l. A schooner belonging to Mr. Benjamin Roberts, was here dashed to pieces and the schooner Elizabeth. George Tyler, master, just arrived from Jamaica, had her stern adn lasboard? quarter beat in down to the keel, the stern pole being caried away. .. [much more]." * This article occupied the greater part of the front page of the paper on Thursday, July 26, 1770. No doubt the extent of the damage prevented a more timely account from reaching Virginia. I found the account to also be telling of the extent of commerce occuring at Roper's Wharf, which was one of the largest and most principal wharfs at Charleston, SC.

    1. Jesse ROPER Mention in the Virginia Gazette on 22 Nov 1770
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Roper, Cowley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/804 Message Board Post: Jesse ROPER was mentioned in an advertisement appearing in the 22 Nov 1770 edition of the Virginia Gazette [at Pag e2, Column 3]. The extant film image of that ad is very difficult to read. What I am able to readily make out seems to say: "To Be RENTED, THE ORDINARY in Richmond town formerly kept by Mrs. Mary Cowley, deceased, and now by Mr. Jesse Roper. ... ???????? to me in Chesterfield or to Mr. Roper ??? ????. ABRAHAM COWLEY." * * * This Jesse ROPER seems most likely to be either Jesse ROPER (b 31 May 1751), son of Charles ROPER and Anne GOODWYN, or Jesse ROPER, son of Shadrach ROPER. A careful study of the personal property tax records for Chesterfield, Henrico, Powhaton and Richmond may distinguish which Jesse ROPER lived in Richmond and once ran the Ordinary. * Another Virginia Gazette entry transcribed and Posted by Dr. L. David ROPER at his ROPER Family History web site shows: "The Virginia Gazette newspaper of Richmond City on 11 May 1782: John Brooke, administrator, at Henrico, advertises for sale to the highest bidder before Mr. Jesse Roper's door in Richmond, on 23 inst., a large quantity of household and kitchen furniture, the personal estate of Abraham Cowley, deceased." It would seem that the COWLEYs and ROPERs continued to have a close relationship in the decade following the ad I have posted above. It seems possible that Jesse ROPER might have been married to a COWLEY or that Abraham COWLEY might have been married to a ROPER. * It is also noteworthy that two decades following the ad, a John ROPER is shown to have an ordinary license in Richmond. It appears likley that the ordinary advertised in 1770 ultimately continued to be operated by a member of the ROPER family. Close scrutiny of personal property tax records may give us a clearer understanding of this ROPER family.

Surnames: Roper, Williams Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/803 Message Board Post: Charles ROPER is mentioned in a probate ad appearing in the Virginia Gazette on 16 May 1771 [at Page 3, Coulmn 1] and 23 May 1771 [at Page 3, Column 2]: "To Be SOLD (pursuant to the last Will and Testament of Mr. Thomas Williams, desceased) to the highest Bidder on Monday the 17th of June, at Dinwiddie Courthouse, being Court Day, if fair, otherwise at the July Court following, THE LAND and PLANTATION, near Petersburg, whereon the said Williams lived, containing four Hundred and ten Acres, with sundry improvements thereon, also two other Tracts adjoining the same, one containing four Hundred and forty four, and the other three Hundred and ninety three Acres, on each of them there is a great Quantity of fine Timber, of Pine more especially. Twelve Months Credit will be allowed for one Half the Purchase Money, and two Years for the other Half, on giving Bond and approved security. At the same time will also be sold another Tract of four Hundred Acres, in the said County of Dinwiddie, being on or near Hatcher's Run, in the Neighbourhood of Mr. John Roberts, Charles Roper, etc. FRANCIS EPPES, THOMAS WILLIAMS, Executors" * The Charles ROPER mentioned is presumably the Charles ROPER who married Anne GOODWYN and whose 1760 Dinwiddie Patent is shown in my previous Post: "Dinwiddie County, VA, Patent of 10 Sep 1760 To Charles Roper" (22 Jun 2002 1:37 AM GMT) http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.roper&m=490 Hatcher's Run is a stream in Dinwiddie Southwest of Petersburg, flowing past Burgess just below the Petersburg Municipal Airport about this location: http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=14&Z=18&X=86&Y=1285&W=3 http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=18&X=342&Y=5145&W=3 http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=18&X=345&Y=5142&W=3 This stream feeds Jordan Lake, a Fort Lee recreation area, and then continues to the Southeast. Interstate 85 traverses this stream between Petersburg and the town of Dinwiddie. * Thomas WILLIAMS patented at least four tracts in Dinwiddie County. Images of these Patents, including a Patent for 564 acres on 15 May 1755, a Patent for 300 acres on 14 Feb 1761, a Patent for 1315 1/2 acres on 23 May 1763, and an additional Patent for 400 acres on 23 May 1763, may be viewed online at the web site of the Library of Virginia: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/

Posted and appraised to 9l. DAVID ROPER." * * * This ad seems likely to have been placed by David ROPER (b 29 Jun 1742), son of Charles ROPER and Anne GOODWYN, but there were also other contemporary David ROPERs. My ancestor David ROPER (b 13 Nov 1744, d 16 Apr 1808 - Charles City, VA) is NOT known to have lived in Brunswick County. However, it is also true that David ROPER's (d 1808) inventory dated 10 Oct 1808 contained a sorrel mare appraised at 12l. But it seems unlikely that this could be the same sorrel horse found in Brunswick 36 years earlier!

This horse was missing the evening of the 21st of November, and is supposed to be stolen, is a northern bred horse, and has a very thick curled mane and foretop. MILES SELDEN, Jun." This ad appeared in the 11 Dec 1779 edition of the Virginia Gazette printed by Dixon & Nicholson at Williamsburg on Page 3, at Column 1. The ad reappeared in 18 Dec 1779 edition of the same newspaper on Page 4, at Column 1. * * * There is a Miles SELDEN shown to be a minister destined for Virginia in an entry dated 21 Jan 1752 showing application to the crown for compensation for his passge to America. * An obituary for a Col. Miles SELDEN appeared in the Richmonfd Enquirer on 24 May 1811 on Page 3. Another obituary for a Col. Miles SELDEN is shown to have been published in the Prince George Enquirer on 21 May 1814 on Page 3. It is unclear to me whetther these references are actually CORRECT with two separate obituaries almost precisely three years apart. One of these dates may be incorrect. I have NOT seen either obituary. * It seems most likely that the advertiser was Col. Miles SELDEN, Jr. (b 09 Apr 1752, d 18 MAY 1811), the son of Rev. Miles SELDEN and Rebecca CARY. This Miles SELDEN, Jr., is shown by secondary sources to have married Elizabeth ARMISTEAD on 27 MAR 1774. Secondary sources assert that Rev. Miles SELDEN (d 20 Mar 1785) was the minister of Henrico Parish from 1752 through 1776. Why Col. Miles SELDEN desired his missing horse to be delivered to John ROPER is unclear. * HAS ANYONE SEEN COL. SELDEN'S MISSING HORSE??

    1. ADMIN. POST - Difficulty in Receiving List Mail
    2. P. S. Wyant
    3. Hello, folks, I'm writing this to advise you of certain difficulties RootsWeb has had over the past several weeks in delivering mail to certain of its lists. In the most recent occurrence, earlier this week, the problem was affecting lists that are on RootsWeb "lists8" server only. This list is on that server, hence this post. Briefly, the problem is that a number of smaller ISPs make use of various commercial services in an effort to control spam. One of those services is SpamCop ... you can find the SpamCop home page at: http://www.spamcop.net/ . Unfortunately, this particular spam control service doesn't really care very much about the accuracy of its protective services. In this recent instance, the RootsWeb "lists8" server was "blacklisted" by SpamCop and thus any ISP that uses this commercial service has rejected all legitimate list mail that it has received from RootsWeb for delivery during the period of outage. The result has been that significant volumes of legitimate list mail to various lists have been undelivered and many subscribers have been bounced off their lists. If you're wondering why the list was quieter than usual earlier this week, this is the reason. SpamCop blacklists for 24 hours and then removes the blacklist item. RootsWeb has done all it can to resolve the issue. They suggest that one thing that subscribers can do is to contact their ISP and request that RootsWeb list mail be "whitelisted", meaning that it will be delivered and the SpamCop settings will be ignored. This will help if the situation reoccurs again in the future. Happy to respond to any subscribers' questions on this, of course ... there are many technical details I haven't provided in this notice ... pls contact me OFF-LIST at: [listname]- [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> Regards, Peter Wyant List Admin.

I believe that Dave ROPER has already e-mailed to you some summary information showing the data and relationships as they are presently understood. In this message, my focus is on what is actually known with a high degree of certainty. First, I would point out that Henry Clay ROPER and his wife Zora appear in the 1900 Census enumeration residing at Township 5, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory [Oklahoma]: United States Census -- 1900 Township 5, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (Enumeration District 120), Sheet 28A 25 Jun 1900 Line 23, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, H.C., Head, White, Male, Born Oct 1858, Age 41, Married 12 Yrs, Born KY, Father Born KY, Mother Born KY, Farmer Line 24, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Zora, Wife, White, Female, Born Nov 1867, Age 32, Married 12 Yrs, 6 Children, 5 Children Living, Born MS, Father Born MS, Mother Born MS Line 25, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Liley??, SON, White, Male, Born May 1882, Age 18, Single, Born INDIAN TERRITORY, Father Born KY, Mother Born KY, Farm Laborer Line 26, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Alonzo, SON, White, Male, Born Aug 1884, Age 15, Single, Born ARKANSAS, Father Born KY, Mother Born KY, Farm Laborer Line 27, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Bela?, daughter, White, Female, Born Mar 1889, Age 11, Single, Born INDIAN TERRITORY, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS Line 28, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Rhoda, daughter, White, Female, Born Mar 1891, Age 9, Single, Born INDIAN TERRITORY, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS Line 29, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Pearl, daughter, White, Female, Born Jan 1894, Age 6, Single, Born Oklahoma, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS Line 30, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Joseph, son, White, Male, Born Aug 1896, Age 3, Single,3127, Dwelling 572, Family 582, ROPER, Rufus, son, White, Male, Born Jul 1898, Age 1, Single, Born INDIAN TERRITORY, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS [Imgae 1 of 25 at the Ancestry.com presentation of 1900 Census data for this jurisdiction.] This record CONFIRMS a number of the details shown in the data summaries sent to you by Dr. L. David ROPER. It also reveals the existence of a prior marriage and two additional sons NOT SHOWN on the data sheet. Note that the two eldest sons, born in 1882 and 1884 are shown to have a mother born in KY. Also, H.C. and Zora ROPER are shown to have been married only 12 years. THe 18 and 15 year old sons are from a PRIOR marriage to a woman born in KY. This is further confirmed by the indication that Zora has had SIX children only five of whom are living by 1900. The dead child is presumably the child shown in Dave's records as Samuel Dutoy ROPER (b 22 Sep 1887, d 24 Oct 1888 - OK). The birth places of the children show that Henry C. ROPER was alrady living in Indian Territory by 1882, but that he drifted around a bit over the decades between 1880 and 1900. * The 1910 Census record gives us a bit of additional insight: United States Census -- 1910 Maxwell Township, Pontotoc, Oklahoma (Enumeration District 250), Sheet 2B 07, 08 & 09 MAY 1910 Line 89, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Henry C., Head, Male, White, Age 51, Married 2ND, 22 yrs in present marriage, Born KY, Father Born KY, Mother Born VIRGINIA, Farmer, General Farm Line 90, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Zora, Wife, Female, Age 42, Married 1ST, 22 yrs in present marriage, 9 Children, 8 Children Living, Born MS, Father Born MS, Mother Born NORTH CAROLINA Line 91, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Belle, daughter, Female, Age 21, Married 1ST, 4 yrs in present marriage, 1 Child, 1 Child Living, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS, Farm Laborer, Home Farm Line 92, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Rhona, daughter, Female, Age 19, Single, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS, Farm Laborer, Home Farm Line 93, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Joseph, son, Male, Age 13, Single, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS, Farm Laborer, Home Farm Line 94, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Rufus, son, Male, Age 11, Single, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS, Farm Laborer, Home Farm Line 92, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Henry, son, Male, Age 9, Single, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS Line 92, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Monroe, son, Male, Age 6, Single, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS Line 92, Dwelling 195, Family 195, ROPER, Lila, son [sic], Female, Age 3, Single, Born OK, Father Born KY, Mother Born MS [Imgae 18 of 36 at the Ancestry.com presentation of 1910 Census data for this jurisdiction.] The indication in the 1910 Census record is that Henry Clay ROPER's MOTHER was born in Virginia, rather than Kentucky. Zora's mother is shown to have been born in North Carolina. * I have NOT yet found Henry C. ROPER in the 1880 Census enumeration. If he was already in the Indian Territory in 1880, he may be very difficult to locate. * As you indicate, secondary sources show Amanda M. BUGG marrying a Christopher Columbus JOHNSON on 24 SEP 1867 in Clinton, Hickman Co., KY. The authority of this assertion is unclear to me, though it is sufficiently specific to readily lend itself to verification. This Christopher Columbus JOHNSON is shown to have been born on 07 AUG 1847 and to have died on 12 JUL 1921 in either Shawnee, Oklahoma, or in Butler, KY. Amanda is shown to have been born 06 AUG 1838 and to have died on 19 MAY 1892 in Shawnee Oklahoma. There DOES seem to be a Kentucky death certificate showing the death of a Columbus C. JOHNSON at age 74 on 12 JUL 1921 [Vol. 29, Certificate 14150]. I would think that this is authoritative as to the place of death of Christopher Columbus JOHNSON, though I would encourage you to obtain the death certificate to see what it says. This seems likely to be the individual shown in the 1920 Census as Columbus JOHNSON, age 74, residing at the Home of Aged and Infirm, St. Helris, Jefferson County, KY (Enumeration District 236). However, this Columbus JOHNSON is shown to be SINGLE rather than a WIDOWER. I AM NOT CONFIDENT THAT THIS IS THE SAME CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS JOHNSON WHO IS ASSERTED TO HAVE MARRIED AMANDA BUGG, BUT SOMEONE WITH SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF TE FAMILY MAY KNOW. It appears to me that this particular Columbus JOHNSON may have been the Columbus JOHNSON enumerated in the 1900 Census residing at Morgantown, Butler County, KY. THe record is very difficult to read, but the children within this household all seem to have been born in KY. If you are aware of a Census record showing BOTH Christopher Columbus JOHNSON and Amanda BUGG, perhaps you can share that information with us. * * * I am unclear as to precisely what PRIMARY source infomration supports the ascription of Henry Clay ROPER as the son of Joseph Allen ROPER OR the ascription of Joseph Allen ROPER as the son of Dutoy ROPER (b 25 Mar 1810 - Woodford, KY, d bef 1846). I presume that there exists some Will or Administration supporting this ascription, but it would be handy if someone Posted that information. You might want to refer to several of my previous Posts showing some other primary evidence regarding ROPERs from this part of Kentucky. For example, my Post "1860 Census Record for Dutoy ROPER (b abt 1835/6 - KY), of Moscow, Hickman County, KY" [3 Jan 2005 7:01 AM GMT] at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.roper/735 seems to show Harriet Ross ROPER, age 54 (b abt 1806 - NC) residing with her son and daughter-in-law, Dutoy and Burnetta ROPER, age 24 and 19, respectively. There is an Elam ROPER,age 42 (b abt 1818 - KY), nearby. My Post "1850 Census Record for Harriett ROPER (b abt 1805 - NC), of Hickman County, KY" [3 Jan 2005 7:16 AM GMT] at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.roper/736 shows Harriet with four children in her household. My previous Post cited erroneous identifies Joseph ROPER, age 13 (b abt 1837 - KY), as FEMALE. Of course, the original record shows him to be MALE. This rather clearly demonstrates that there WAS a Joseph ROPER within the household of Harriet ROPER, which Joseph ROPER seems likely to have been Dutoy and Harriet ROPER's SON. * my Post "1850 Census Record for Lewis ROPER (b abt 1824 - KY), of Fulton, KY" (31 Aug 2003 9:09 PM GMT) at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.roper/648 shows a Joseph ROPER, age 12 (b abt 1838 - KY), residing within the household of Lewis and Rosella ROPER, age 26 and 22, respectively. He is listed after several children and appears likley to be Lewis ROPER's younger brother, nephew or cousin. There is a Joseph ROPER, age 4, in this household, who appears to be Lewis ROPER's son. Please note that the Joseph ROPER in Lewis ROPER's household is virtually indistinguishable in age from the Joseph ROPER who is shown to be residing within Harriet ROPER's household in 1850. This introduces more than a little prospect for a misascription. * One of these Joseph ROPERs MIGHT BE the J. E. ROPER, age 23 (b abt 1837 - KY) shown to be a farm hand with the household of W. G. McGRIER, in Yuba, SUtter County, CA, in 1860. * There is also a Joseph ROPER, age 21 (b abt 1839 - KY) residing within the household of Delilah ROPER, age 46, in Fulton, KY, in 1860. * ANd there is a J. ROPER or J. RAPER, age 23, residing with wife N. ROPER or RAPER, age 12, and two children S. E. ROPER/RAPER, age 3, and W. H. ROPER/RAPER, age 1, in Marshall County, KY. There are two other ROPER/RAPER households immediately adjacent on the same CEnsus page. * ANd there is a Josephus ROSSEN, age 28 (b abt 1832), apparently residing within the household of Thoams GOLDSMITH, in Columbus, Hickman County, KY, in 1860. The subsequent record shows a Saphronia B. ", possibly meaning Saphronia B. ROSSEN and possibly meaning Saphronia B. GOLDSMITH, age 20. Children Preston A. ", age 6, and Mary R. ", age 1/12, immediately follow Saphronia. * The Joseph ROPER, age 8, shown in the household of James B. MCCLELLAND and Zulima ROPER, seems too young to have been Joseph Allen ROPER. Accepting that Joseph Allen ROPER married in 1858, this Joseph would have been only age 16. (See my Post "1850 Census Record for Zulima ROPER (b abt 1815 - KY), of Fulton, KY", 31 Aug 2003 8:46 PM GMT, at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.roper/647 .) * * * The 1860 Census shows a Sherwood and Sarah BUGG, age 59 (b 1801 - NC) and 40 (b 1820 - VA), respectively, residing in Moscow, Hickman County, KY. This couple is a few Census pages away from Harriet ROPER mentioned above. These seem to possibly be Amanda BUGG's parents. However, I CANNOT seem to locate Amanda in the 1850 Census. Aboutthe best match is the Amanda M. BUGG, age 17 (b abt 1833 - MO), who seems to be residing with husband John B. BUGG, age 25 (b abt 1825 - VA) in Boone County, Missouri, in 1850. * * * I would also recommend to you my Post "1840 Census Record for Hickman, KY, ROPERs" [31 Aug 2003 10:48 PM GMT] at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.roper/650 . Preumably, the Dutoy ROPER shown is the husband of Harriet and father of Joseph ROPER. * * * With respect to your suggestion that Joseph Allen ROPER might have divorced Amanda, this seems almost inconceivable to me. Divorce was VERY RARE in those days. If Amanda remarried, this is a strong indication that Joseph Allen ROPER was DEAD. * * * It is unclear to me whether this information is of any great help. Someone with a particularly kean interest in this ROPER family probably needs to pull marriage, probate and deed records from Hickman County, Kentucky, to gain a clearer picture of this family. There are also several Kentucky Land Grants (1822-1858) shown on Book 2, at Pages 88 and 89 that bear scrutiny. Finding the precise dates of these grants and the location of the land would be very useful.

Joseph Allen Johnson was born abt. 1872.

GRAHAM (b Apr 1874 - TN) is the William F. GRAHAM, age 7, enumerated within the household of Samuel E. and Saraphine C. GRAHAM, of Washington County, TN, in 1880. This couple is shown to be age 31 and 47, respectively in 1880. Son Jonathan S. GRAHAM, age 9, and sister-in-law Rebecca J. HENLEY, age 64, age also shown to reside within this household. All are shown to have been born in TN. Saraphine and Rebecca are shown to have been born to parents from VA and GA, respectively, and appear to be sisters. This MIGHT HAVE BEEN the same Samuel GRAHAM,age 25, enumerated within Bradley County, TN, in the 1870 Census, together with wife Martha, age 18, and daughter Mary E., age 1. One interesting note is that this Samuel GRAHAM received mail at the "Cleveland" post office within Bradley County. You had previously noted that Finos/Finas' middle name was "Cleveland". Of course, he also might have been named for President Glover Cleveland, but this would seem to be slightly premature given that President Cleveland first took office in 1885 and Finos/Finas was born in Jun 1883.

This William R. GRAHAM is shown to be Robert J. BENTLEY's nephew. There is a Martha A. GRAHAM residing within this household, who is identified as the wife's mother. Presumably, she is Susannah BENTLEY's mother and William R. GRAHAM's grandmother. Of course, William's middle initial does NOT match the "F" found in the Census records you have identified.

Surnames: Roper, Graham, Grayham Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kgDBAEB/797.1 Message Board Post: Emil: I am NOT trying to "sharpshoot" your Query, but I read the surname in the 1900 Census record to say "GRAHAM" rather than "GRAYHAM". It appears to me that we should be looking at records showing BOTH spellings. Also, I read the mother's place of birth in these records as "Alabama". William and Lillie seem to have been married about six years in 1900. It seems to me that the indicated birth dates of Apr 1874 for William F. GRAYHAM/GRAHAM and Jun 1883 for Finas GRAYHAM/GRAHAM indicates a migration from TN to TX during the interval between 1874 and 1883. The typical migration patten from TN in that period was down the Natchez Trace into Mississippi. Thereafter, one would tend to follow the Red River through Arkansas into Texas and Oklahoma. If William and Finas/Finos GRAYHAM's father was living in 1900, one might expect to find him in Texas, Oklahoma, or some place along this route. Texas would be the most likely location, with the sons moving to the frontier -- then Indian Territory -- to find their own land. I would encourage you to take a look at the family of Charles G. GRAYHAM, of Robertson, TX. According to the 1900 Census, he was born in TN during Oct 1850. His wife, Cossie, is shown to have been born in MS in Jan 1855. Thier daughter, Mytle, age 15, was born in TX in Apr 1885. Charles G. GRAYHAM is about the right age to be Finos/Finas GRAYHAM's UNCLE. The 1880 Census record shows CHas GRAHAM, age 30, to have been born in TX to a father born in TN and a mother born in VA. Wife Corrica, age 26, was born in MS. The only children in this household are Eugene J. GRAHAM, age 2, age Chas G. GRAHAM, age 1, each born in TX. * Similarly, and perhaps more importantly, take a closer look at the families of Fay GRAYHAM, age 52 (b Feb 1848 - AL), of Rains Co, TX, and Elizabeth GRAYHAM, age 57 (b Apr 1843 - AL), of Hunt Co., Tex. Fay's daughter Frances, age 12 (b Aug 1887) is shown to have been born in TX to a father and mother each born in AL. This probably rules out Fay as Finos/Finas' mother. Elizabeth is shown to be residing in the HH of son William GRAYHAM, age 24 (b Sep 1875 - TX) to paretns born in NC and AL. We can probably EXCLUDE this Elizabeth, too. * Another family that deserves further study is that of James S. and Jennie LARKIN, of Dallas County, TX. There are three children in this household: Nona L. GRAYHAM, age 18 (b Feb 1882 - AR), Cora M. GRAYHAM, age 18 (b Aug 1881 - TN), and James O., age 15 (b Sep 1884 - AR). This closely corresponds to the imputed migration path of the family of William and Finos GRAYHAM. Each of the children is shown to have a father born in TN. Nona is shown to have a mother born in MS, while Cora and James' mother is shown to be born in TN. This latter information might be transposed. Jennie LARKIN is shown to have had five children, only one of whom is living. This might have been James GRAYHAM, the youngest. The other daughters might have been from a previous marriage. This record implicitly suggests that this family was in TN at the 1880 Census eumeration and came to Texas via Arkansas after 1884. * Basically, I believe that one approach to finding Finas's parents is a "brute force" method, taking a look at each GRAYHAM/GRAHAM couple in OK and TX in 1880 and 1900 and looking for a couple with male in HH born in TN and female born in AL. The couple would probably be born within about ten years of 1850. This involves more than a little bit of work, but in several hours you might find the correct HH. Another approach would involve looking for other siblings of William F. and Finos/Finas in the 1900 to 1920 Census. You would basically be looking for GRAYHAMs/GRAHAMs born abt 1880 +/- 10 yrs born in Tenn or Texas residing in Texas. The candidate would have a father born in Tenn and a Mother born in Ala. Best of luck!
