The brother of David Roper of Cumberland was not John A. Roper. John A. Roper was David's son, as shown in the probate records. John C. Roper, also known as John Roper, Jr.in the 1820 Cumberland, KY census, was the brother of David Roper and also the son of John Roper, Sr. who came up from Caswell, NC. Interestingly, in taking a glance at the original will of Philip Lawson, he mentions a purchase of land from what appears to be a John C. Roper, if I am reading it correctly. Author: batchelorw Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1743.6.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Bill, Bill, You are correct that the David Roper of both Cumberland, KY and Rhea, TN, is the David Roper who married Nancy Lewis in Caswell, NC. The David Y. Roper of Giles, TN is a different person and was not married to Nancy Lewis, as is commonly stated in both the L. Roper database and on most posted pedigrees on Ancestry.com. David Roper, to my knowledge, never owned property in McMinn, TN. David Roper did own land in both Cumberland County, KY and Rhea, TN, as we have seen from extant transcribed probate records. In looking at the book "Cumberland County Kentucky Deed Records Abstract and Index" compiled by Laura Lee Butler and Randolph N. Smith, 1975, we find that David and his wife are selling some of their property in Cumberland, KY: "David Roper & w. Nancy of Rhea Co. Tenn. to Clement Scott land on Galaway; 2/8/1831; G-241; also 6-242; 8/18/1830". P. 158 Notice that the above record is the first and only time that I am aware of that we come across the name of the wife of David Roper of Cumberland County, KY. This would be consistent with David Roper marrying Nancy Lewis in Caswell, NC in 1802. "David Roper of Rhea County to Joel Scott land on Galloway Creek; 8/2/1830; G-244". P. 158 There is also this entry in a Kentucky deed book: Deed Book A 278 26 Feb. 1831 David Roper of Rhea co. to Solomon Hayes. I currently show David Roper of Cumberland County, KY to be born about 1778, and my earlier post in 2012 stating a birth in about 1882 would be incorrect. David Roper of Cumberland County, KY is shown with no slaves in the 1810 Cumberland County, KY census. David Roper is shown with one male slave in the 1820 Cumberland County, KY census. His father John Roper, Sr. and his brother John Roper, Jr. (also known as John A. Roper) are shown with no slaves when they arrive in Cumberland County, KY as shown in the 1820 census. John Roper, Sr. had one slave as shown in the 1810 Caswell, NC census, but he may have lost the slave when he had a judgment entered against his 484 acres and his personal property in 1811 in Caswell, NC. David Roper of Cumberland, KY is shown with one male slave <14 in the 1820 Cumberland, KY census. David Rope is shown with four slaves in the 1830 Rhea, TN census: one male 24-35, one female <10, one female 10-23, and one female 24-35. I do not agree that it would be "better to move on past the false ascription" of David Y. Roper "as a son of William Roper and Sarah (possibly Sarah Yates, but with no extant record) and "to focus on the REAL relationships." So far, I think that Jeffrey Howard Roper' claimed lineage is probably correct. I am confused by this paragraph: "I would think that the David Roper in Cumberland/Rhea would have been age 10-14 in the 1790 census. And he would have been 20-24 in the 1800 census. How does that inform or alter our view as to the candidates to be this David Roper's father?" It is most probable that the John Roper of Halifax, VA, who can be seen buying property in Caswell, NC in about 1798, and who is the only Roper shown in deed records in Caswell, NC between 1800-1810, with the exception of his son Henry Roper, was the father of David Roper, who married Nancy Lewis in 1802 in Caswell, NC. This if further supported by the John Roper, aka John Roper, Sr. and his son John Roper, Jr. moving to Cumberland County, KY to appear in the 1820 census where his son David Roper is residing. In reference to the McMinn connection, this, in my opinion, primarily has to do with Philip L. Roper and his family. However, I am not sufficiently comfortable with those connections to adopt them at the present time. It is possible that Philip L. was the son of Thomas Roper of Pulaski, KY, as shown in the 1810 census. It is possible that Thomas Roper and his wife died, leaving orphans. It is possible that three of those male orphans were Philip L. Roper, and James and Joseph Roper of McMinn, TN. However, I am still working on that data and am not satisfied that I have sufficient proof. Finally, I have seen no original deed records for David Roper. This Will names wife Polly ROPER and Francis KEEN and the executors and sole beneficiaries. The Will expressly bequeaths land purchased from John C. ROPER to Polly and Keen. While the purchase of the land may be strictly incidental, given the memorialization of Philip LAWSON's name within the ROPER family, I cannot help but wonder whether John C. ROPER might have been Philip LAWSON's father-in-law, selling or giving land to his son-in-law to set him up with a farm upon marriage. I realize that this is sheer speculation. I find the absence of mention of any children to be more consistent with a childless couple. Author: waroper Surnames: Roper Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1787.5/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Frank: In reviewing this post from last year, it appears to me that you made a mistake in the calculation of James ROPER's implicit year of birth, at least in respect of this portion of your post: "1840 McMinn Co.: George Roper 21001-10001 90 Jas. Roper 00000001-0001001 100 James Roper is age 50-60. This would mean his birth date was 1810,if we compare this census record with the age range in the 1830 census. The oldest female is shown as age 40-50. There is a younger female age 15-20." If I am correct in understanding that the record tersely summarized above reflected a James ROPER age 50 to 59, this would seem to suggest that this James ROPER was born about 1781-90. You had previously observed: "The 1830 US census of Tennessee: McMinn Co.: James Roper 0 1 0 0 0 1 - 0 2 0 0 0 1 1 Page 152; A James Roper is shown to be age 30-40, consistent with a birth date between 1800 and 1810. James is again found in the 1840 McMinn, TN census, along with a younger George Roper 10 pages away. James is living next to Francis Reid and Jno McMahan." If the Census transcription is correct, then this seems to be consistent with a James ROPER (b abt 1791-1800). * You then go on to state: "James Roper does not appear in the 1850 McMinn County, TN census. Francis Reid and Jno McMahan are still residing next to each other, but there is no James Roper. I cannot find a similar James Roper in any 1850 census. There is a James Roper found in the 1860 Township 16 N Range 7 E, Douglas, ILL census. He is age 60, born in 1800, Kentucky. This would not match the 1810 birthdate of the James Roper in McMinn, TN." While I would tend to AGREE that the James ROPER in McMinn is inconsistent with both the 1830 and 1840 Census records AS SHOWN, I would encourage you to re-verify the posted Census data and to clarify the boundary between the male and female counts, especially in the 1830 records which is summarized in a way inconsistent with the presentation in the underlying Census enumeration. Hopefully, you posted figures you verified through Ancestry, since the data at Dave's site is often unreliable. If the posted figures are correct, would you agree that the 1830 and 1840 is actually consistent within a margin of reporting error, supporting a possible ascription that this James ROPER is: James ROPER (b abt 1791-1800) [1830] James ROPER (b abt 1781-90) [1840] Possibly to be interpreted that James ROPER was born abt 1790-1? Precisely WHEN did David ROPER actually buy his land in Missouri? Are there other records in Kentucky, Tennessee or Missouri that can further inform our understanding of this ROPER family." Once you establish the presence of a family in a place, it is always a good idea to check both the extant tax records and deed records to more particularly establish WHEN a householder first arrived in a place and when that householder or landowner departed. Although I had suggested checking the records in Cumberland and Rhea, checking in other nearby places also makes sense. Especially when the Census records show a presence of the ROPER family in such a place. Since many Counties have some posted deed abstract information, checking the USGenWeb pages is a good first step. Making use of Lookup volunteers through USGenWeb OR posting a Query at the County page is also a very effective and efficient way to lean about deeds and tax records. Today, I checked the USGenWeb page for McMinn and found that they had posted a Grantor-Grantee summary of the early McMinn, TN, deeds. I found this mention at the McMinn site: 278 26 Feb. 1831 David Roper of Rhea co. to Solomon Hayes. Someone will need to pull the image of the deed and post a transcription to fully appreciate its significance. It seems to me that this record is highly suggestive that David ROPER, of Rhea, TN, was a landowner in McMinn, TN. Separately, please note that I also found a transfer by Joseph ROPER, of Shelby, AL. See: * * * How does this alter your thinking about the relationships between David ROPER, of Cumberland, KY, David ROPER, of Rhea, TN, and the others shown passing through McMinn, TN: Joseph ROPER, James ROPER, and George ROPER? A James ROPER and a George ROPER were enumerated residing in McMinn County, TN, in the 1840 Census. The sale of the land in 1841 seems to be consistent with the possibility that Joseph ROPER might have retained ownership of this land which might have been occupied and farmed by one or more of his relatives, possibly including George Wallace ROPER (b 29 Nov 1817). ROPER is the son of Daniel ROPER and Elizabeth ADAMS and that he was born in Edgefield, South Carolina. To the the extent this is true, it seems that this John W. ROPER was the grandson of David ROPER, discussed within several recent posts. Those with a keen interest in this family might want to re-verify their assertions about the Civil War service of this John W. ROPER. While I have no specific information about his Civil War service record, it seems doubtful that this John ROPER died at the Battle of Chickamauga. I realize that I had also previously noted that the 1820 Census record for David ROPER (b bef 1776), of Crooked Creek, Washington County, Illinois, is consistent with that of the second David ROPER in Pulaski. Although I believe that I posted some information abstracted from the book "Past and Present of Greene County, Missouri, Vol. I" by Jonathan FAIRBANKS and Clyde Edwin TUCK (Indianapolis, IN: A. W. Bowen & Company, 1915), I am unsure whether I noticed and included some of the genealogical details noted within the sketch of William Henry FULBRIGHT (b 15 Aug 1837 - Greene, MO), David ROPER's grandson. The sketch appears online at the Archive.org site, so I am NOT going to attempt to transcribe the entire thing here, but will excerpt below what I think are the significant genealogical details: "He is the son of John Lawson and Elizabeth O. (Roper) Fulbright. He is the scion of two old American families of colonial stock. His grandfather, David Roper was a soldier in the war of 1812, and fought at the battle of Horse Shoe under Gen. Andrew Jackson. The great-grandfather on his mother's side was a soldier in the Revolutionary war." Later, we are told: "John L. Fulbright, father of the immediate subject of this sketch, was born on October 11, 1816, and was therefore thirteen years of age when he came with his parents to Greene county and here he grew to manhood and engaged in farming. ... The death of John L. Fulbright occurred on October 31, 1882, on the old farm in Campbell township. His wife, who was born in Tennessee in 1816, died on the homestead here June 21, 1885." * * * Admittedly, this is a secondary rather than primary source, but it was written vastly closer in time to the events during the memory of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and focused on that particular place. Other details mostly check out. While I wouldn't totally rely upon all assertions, I would consider any assertion within the book to be worthy of investigation! Although the sketch does NOT specify the identity of the great-grandfather who served in the Revolutionary war, it is specified that this is a great-grandfather on William Henry FULBRIGHT's mother's side (Elizabeth ROPER), indicating that either David ROPER's father fought in the revolution OR that David ROPER's wife's father was a Revolutionary War soldier. This David ROPER was known to be married to Rebecca CANNON. We are also given specific dates for Elizabeth ROPER's (b 1816 - TN, d 21 Jun 1885 - Greene, MO) birth and death. In Greene County, we find again the concurrence of the names ROPER and LAWSON. Greene County is WALKING distance from Arkansas where Charles Jackson ROPER is later found. The family of David ROPER always seemed to me to be a central clue to identifying the origins of Charles Jackson ROPER and Philip Lawson ROPER and I continue to be baffled at the effort you seem to put in to connect your lines to various ROPER ancestors for whom there is still minimal evidence of a direct connection. I would encourage you to further elaborate the genealogy of this interesting Missouri ROPER family, which may very well have migrated together with the LAWSON family, and suspect that you are going to discover that this David ROPER is a brother, uncle, first, or second cousin. Identification of the Revolutionary ancestor of William Henry FULBRIGHT (b 15 Aug 1837 - Greene, MO) may be as simple as looking him up in a DAR lineage book. The ancestor is going to be a ROPER or a CANNON. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: waroper Surnames: Miller, Roper, Tompkins, Lindley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.roper/1860/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I stumbled across an interesting old record of a marriage of Thomas MILLER and Mary M. LINDLY in Vigo County, Indiana, while searching for something else. Because the record is rather obscure and might be of some use to a descendent of this couple, I wanted to share the record on the ROPER Message Board. The record appears to me to be MISINDEXED at the Family Search site, probably due to the unusual organization of the data on the underlying primary record, which appears to me to span SIX pages across THREE Family Search images. Family Search uses volunteers of varying experience and competence to index newly posted records. In my view, the Indexer may not have taken the time to fully understand the unusual organization of the underlying data which appears to me to be IMPROPERLY labeled by spreading data across consecutive pages CONTRARY to the column headings. The underlying images for this record can be viewed for FREE at the Family Search site for those registered for a FREE account: * The Thomas MILLER - Mary M. LINDLY marriage entry is at line 22. On the first of six pages [Image 180 of 337], the Full Name of the Groom [1], Place of Residence of Groom [3], Age at NEXT Birthday (of Groom) [3], Color (of Groom) [4] and Occupation [5] are Given. On the NEXT Page (same image), the (Groom's) Place of Birth [6], (Groom's) Father's Name [7], (By) Whom Married [19] and Date of Marriage [20] is identified. Then, on the FOLLOWING page (next image) [Image 181 of 337], the record continues with the Full Name of Groom [1], then (Groom's) Mother's Maiden Name [8], No. of (Groom's) Marriage [9], Full Name of Bride [10], [Next Page] (Bride's) Place of Residence [11], (Bride's) Age NEXT Birthday [12], Color [13], (By) Whom Married [19], and Date of Marriage [20]. The parentheticals are MY interpretation of the data based upon content and organization. The numbers in brackets are column numbers actually identified in the Marriage Book. Dave ROPER's Kentucky page notes: "Mrs. Yorke Burdine, Rt. 3, Box 213 BC, Somerset, KY 42501 (decd before 1989) states: Sarah Clark was the widow of James Clark who died in Shelby Co. in 1811." No further primary support for this assertion is given. It occurred to me to search for marriages of James CLARKs to Sarahs at FamilySearch.org, and this immediately presented a rather interesting result that seems to fit too nicely to be a coincidence: James CLARK m Sarah FITZPATRICK on 21 Jan 1799 in Amherst County, VA. Realize that the witnesses to the David ROPER - Sarah CLARK prenuptial agreement were: Edwin Fitzpatrick, Peter W. Clark. The witness to the Pulaski, KY, deed of David and Sarah CLARK to Brink ELLIOTT in 1821 is shown to be John Fitzpatrick. Whether these FITZPATRICKs are brothers or sons from a prior marriage is unclear. This seems to me to be highly unlikely to be a mere coincidence, though rather than making an ascription I would identify this as an avenue for additional investigation for those with an interest in this David ROPER and Sarah CLARK. It would still be a good idea to get a look at the deed to Brink ELLIOTT as well as the 1839 David ROPER Will. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I failed to more thoroughly consult my notes regarding this David ROPER before the extemporaneous post above. To prevent others viewing this thread from being misled as to this possibility, I would both retract my statement above shown below and refer researchers to my recent post: "Edgefield, SC, Administration of Estate of David ROPER (1802)" (10 Mar 2014 4:34AM) http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.roper/1859.6/mb.ashx Retracted Argument: "One possibility is that the second David ROPER in Pulaski in 1810 was actually David ROPER (b 29 Jun 1742), son of Charles and Ann ROPER. The evidence for this is admittedly exceptionally THIN yet is far more persuasive than the evidence marshaled in favor of the ascription you propose." Since this David ROPER was already DEAD, he clearly wasn't the David ROPER shown in the 1810 Pulaski enumeration. Even so, I would make two other points. First, ABSENT the additional information that this David ROPER was dead, the Census information and the deeds from 1819 seem consistent with such an ascription and were stronger evidence than that that you marshaled. I say this as a caution to making speculative ascriptions rather than asserting that my argument was "right". My argument was WRONG, but was consistent with the data EXCEPT FOR David ROPER's prior probate. Second, I would observe that several of the Dinwiddie ROPERs, including this David ROPER and his SON named David ROPER were SLAVE OWNERS. This is an important distinguishing detail. The second David ROPER might still turn out to be the son of David ROPER (b 29 Jun 1742, d abt 1802 - Edgefield, SC). Slave counts and slave identities are EXCEPTIONALLY IMPORTANT in Colonial genealogy! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would first observe that no one seems to have yet pulled the extant Will for this David ROPER. I have seen people discuss this Revolutionary War veteran in various written/printed Queries over the years in advance of Internet genealogy. And he has been much discussed at this Message Board. But NO ONE has bothered to get the Will to find out WHAT IT SAYS. To me, speculating about these various relationships, beyond a certain point is a complete waste of energy. One develops a theory and then TESTS THE THEORY by obtaining actual data rather than moving from a questionable conclusion to a new theory based upon the shaky foundations of the prior inquiry. If the identity of the ROPERs in Rutherford is important to your investigation as to the origins of Charles Jackson ROPER or Philip Lawson ROPER, one simply OBTAINS the primary records, transcribes them and follows the data where it leads. The answer to some of your questions may very well be in that Will or the associated probate data. * Earlier in this thread, you identified the Census data for David ROPER, of Pulaski, in the 1820 and 1830 Census: "In the 1820 Pulaski census, there is only one David Roper family left in Pulaski, KY, who now has to be the Revolutionary War Veteran: David Roper 45 plus 1 male 26-44 1 female 45 plus 1 female 16-25" * "David Roper can again be seen in the 1830 Pulaski County, KY census on Ancestry.com: David Roper 70-79 1 female 50-59 No children" Neither of these posts identified the slave counts. * The 1810 Census data is somewhat ambiguous as to which David ROPER is the Revolutionary War Veteran. The prenuptial agreement with Sarah CLARK made in April 1820 states: "whereas the said David Roper is sirgrd? of certain lan or property and tenements to the amount of 285 acres whereon he now lives on part thereof and certain slaves, to wit: Dick, Linany, Sewer & Linny." Does David ROPER's 1820 Census record reflect ownership of four slaves? What are the genders and age distributions of the slaves shown in the 1820 Census record for David ROPER?
