    3. I have had my ISP techs here at my home for 2 different 2 hour sessions. Both techs confirmed that Port 21 is closed to non commercial customers. I need to know what open ports Rootsweb has that I can use. Note that my error message stated "blocked by Remote server". That is Rootsweb. That is Rootsweb. > Janelle This makes sense only if the ports being closed are for the client (user's) machine. That will prevent them from being used as an FTP server (port 21), http server (port 80), etc. However, those ports have to be allowed for the destination machine, otherwise browsing the web would be impossible (without using a proxy). FTP is special in that under normal operations, the server (RootsWeb) will try to actively open a data channel to the client. Firewalls make this impossible. Since Charter now essentially has a firewall erected downstream from you, you have no control over it (as opposed to the firewall being on your "client" computer and configured by you). FTP has a "Passive transfer mode" for dealing with just this type of situation. You can configure WS_FTP to use this. In Session Properties =>Advanced tab, check the Passive transfers box and see if that helps. -- John Van Essen <[email protected]> University of Minnesota Alumnus Fridley, Minn. Genealogy pages: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~vanes002/gen/ Crow Wing Co. The error message you are reporting now is different from the one you reported initially, i.e. "server address incorrect". You indicated you are using WS_FTP. WS_FTP creates a session log. Attempt your connection, then copy and paste that entire session log here so we can take a look. Pat
