Without rehashing all of Sandy's problems, let me say that it is indeed possible to inadvertantly reset permissions on a server. It generally does require a "live body" to do it, but it may not have been done intentionally. On another server, I have had my permissions inadvertantly reset a couple of different times. In each case, someone new was working on the server, didn't bother to check the listing of legitimate users, and did a blanket reset of permissions, forgetting to either include me, or create a group access setup. You will definitely need a "live body" and I actually would recommend that you go ahead and contact the technical support folks. Chris
I'm asking a question on this problem, because I am unsure of the answer. A year ago, I uploaded "above" the parent directory. The former CC who had transferred the county site to me knew how to fix it and did. Could this be a possibility in this case with Sandy's site? Second, for about 6 months after I uploaded a certain folder, I had no access to that folder. We could see the folder, pages, and images, but no pics appeared on pages despite correct linking, and pages could not be "viewed" through fileman. The former CC uploaded a totally different page and images to that same folder, as a test, with the same results. I wrote on the Help List and to the Help Desk but got no conclusive help. I finally called Ancestry and asked if they could ask someone in RW to check the server for that little portion of my website -- everything else worked fine. Ancestry Techs suggested that something may have happened when RW was switching servers just before the upload. (Remember, I had taken over the site so I was doing full re-loads by sections or folders during those first 6 months.) The Ancestry techs suggested that one section of where that part of my folder sat on the server might have gotten corrupted or wasn't working right.) The final result is, within 2 weeks, that one little folder suddenly was fixed completely (no changes by me). I'm just offerng the idea that something weird could have happened in the past year with all the server changes RW did. Thanks, Chris, but I've gotten the following response from someone named "Pat" of Rootsweb's tech support staff help desk. I'm still a bit stunned but it seems this was not inadvertent. Rootsweb removed my files and changed the permissions. Appears I'm just the last to know. Hopefully the accounts department will get to the bottom of this mess. At the very least, perhaps they'll provide some explanation for not contacting or at least notifying me. Suppose there's really nothing further to be said other than I do feel myself the brunt of some rather shabby treatment. (bit of an understatement) My apologies for wasting the list's time over a matter which obviously none of you can help with. Please know that I very much appreciate those of you who tried.
