Well, gee, in the meanwhile is it possible for me to get an answer here to my questions as to what might be causing this problem? Can some technical "glitch" in the server delete all the files from our accounts and re-set upload permissions "accidentally"? Is that possible? Or can this sort of thing only be intentionally done by a human? If the latter, then who would have the *ability* to do that sort of thing to our individual accounts? While I'm attempting to get it "fixed," it would be nice to have some idea as to what might've caused this to happen. At the risk of sounding ungrateful, I guess I'm hoping for a little "help" from the "help list." ;-) Thanks, Sandy On Feb 6, 2007, at 1:54 PM, [email protected] wrote: > > Then you could go to the HelpDesk: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ > form1.html > but I think you should wait more than 24 hours for a response > before doing so. > There are not as many staffers as there used to be and replies, > no doubt, > may take a longer time than in the past. Anyone who has the username and password can sign on to your account and make changes so it would depend on if anyone else has been "working" on the account. I would think it was not a technical glitch as no one else seems to be having a problem like yours. Is this your site http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncvance/ Is this also your site http://home.earthlink.net/~ncvance/ Are you forwarding one to the other? pat ____________ Pat Geary http://www.family-genealogy-online.com/ http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/ http://www.blog.family-genealogy-online.com/
Yes, both are my accounts, and were originally created by me many years ago. I'm the only one with the password to either. Of course, for reasons that seem to elude everybody, *someone* at Rootsweb generates the passwords and seems to keep them - not the case at Earthlink (which, incidentally, has extremely secure servers). Regardless, I've not shared my password, nor have I given permission for it to BE shared with anyone, so the only other person to have it would be "the password keeper" at Rootsweb. And somehow, I can't quite imagine that my files would be deleted and permissions reset without even contacting me, particularly given that I created the account when RW was "born." My website has been mirrored on the 2 servers from the day one, as was recommended to ALL county sites many, many moons ago. I cannot imagine Rootsweb would have any reason to do this - and certainly not to do so without even contacting me about it. -Sandy On Feb 6, 2007, at 2:22 PM, Patricia Geary wrote: > At 03:10 PM 2/6/2007, Sandy wrote: >> Can some technical "glitch" in the server delete all the files from >> our accounts and re-set upload permissions "accidentally"? Something certainly doesn't seem right about that. Are you suggesting that Rootsweb would *intentionally* just close an account holders account with NO contact whatsoever? Deleting all files, resetting permissions - and yet NO contact? I've had this account for probably close to 10 years - why on EARTH would they do something like that? -Sandy On Feb 6, 2007, at 2:27 PM, Pat Asher wrote: > At 03:10 PM 2/6/2007, Sandy wrote: >> Well, gee, in the meanwhile is it possible for me to get an answer >> here to my questions as to what might be causing this problem? > > Sandy, > > The "Forbidden" error means the account has been closed, most likely > for an AUP or account agreement violation. very unlikely one hardware failure a few yeasr ago cost some of us one days work as they reloaded a back up copy of the whole have you used the recover password facility via the help desk web pages? I always copy paste my passwords from the old emails bacause they are case sensitive and strong please post the url of your site or is it this another version http://home.earthlink.net/~teylu/woodlist.html Hugh W On 2/6/07, Sandy <[email protected]> wrote: > > > Well, gee, in the meanwhile is it possible for me to get an answer > here to my questions as to what might be causing this problem? > > Can some technical "glitch" in the server delete all the files from > our accounts and re-set upload permissions "accidentally"? Thanks, Hugh. No, the url you've got is simply the list page for an email list. I've only got one RW webspace account: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncvance/ I haven't tried the recover password facility, since I don't seem to be having difficulty logging into the account. My password seems to still work, but the account permissions no longer allow writing to the account, so I cannot upload files and I cannot seem to change the permissions myself. -Sandy On Feb 6, 2007, at 2:26 PM, Hugh Watkins wrote: > very unlikely > > one hardware failure a few yeasr ago cost some of us one days work > as they > reloaded a back up copy of the whole > > have you used the recover password facility via the help desk web > pages? > > I always copy paste my passwords from the old emails bacause they > are case > sensitive and strong > > please post the url of your site > or is it this another version > http://home.earthlink.net/~teylu/woodlist.html > > > > Hugh W > > > > > On 2/6/07, Sandy <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> >> Well, gee, in the meanwhile is it possible for me to get an answer >> here to my questions as to what might be causing this problem? >> >> Can some technical "glitch" in the server delete all the files from >> our accounts and re-set upload permissions "accidentally"?
