Peter, Hope you don't mind me writing direct off the USGW Discuss list...I recently upgraded to XP and now none of my graphics editing programs work. What I need is s/w that will allow me to crop primarily scanned images of older documents (newspapers, etc.) and old photos. All of the s/w I've tried is geared to scanning/importing digital photos and they don't allow me to either crop or set the maximum size of an image. >From your experience with Photoshop Elements, will that s/w allow me to do what I want? If not, do you have any suggestions for a s/w package that will accomplish my goals? Thanks for your time. Look forward to your response. Alice J. If that is all you want to do, look for something inexpensive. Miscrosoft PictureIt does that and a host of other photo retouching jobs. I'm sure that there is other inexpensive software out there that allows you to crop and retouch photos. Ron Wall
I've seen GIMP, which is free and it's almost as powerful as Elements. Having spent only a few minutes with this powerful software (I use Elements) I'm impressed with its features including batch processing. Photoshop and PS Elements have a supreme "save for the web" dialogue box which gives you control over the final size of the file Hugh W On 28/06/07, Ron Wall <[email protected]> wrote: > > If that is all you want to do, look for something inexpensive. Hi Alice, Adobe Photoshop Elements will certainly do what you describe, but you don't need to spend the money. Picasa <picasa.google.com> and Irfanview <irfanview.tuwien.ac.at> are both free, popular and basic organizer/editor programs. I don't see where Picasa will change the pixel dimensions of your images but Irfanview will. Both have capable image enhancement features you might want. And both are simple to use but take your time learning to do what you want, with these or any other editor. More to the point, can anyone on this list suggest a good mailing list or web site for advice for choosing an image editor? Hope this helps... Thanks to Peter, Ron, John and all the others who answered. You've given me a lot of options to explore.
