    3. Tina, Pat and all the other experts out there, I don't think that I used Front Page for any of the things mentioned on the link you sent me to review. Here is the answer to one of your questions - I have a large web site over 11,000 pages. And there has been 3 or 4 coordinators all using different ways of writing code - and most are all obsolete ways now days. I have already updated some of the pages to CSS using both external and internal style sheets. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/barry.htm Another answer - I do not have Expression Web but do have Dreamweaver 8 and see that I can use it to migrate my pages to a different format. I want them all in CSS and want to do away with the old HTML pages without working on the project years and years to accomplish this end objective. >From the instructions it appears that the process might possibly be about the same for Dreamweaver as with Expression Web. Maybe you are trying to sell Expression Web - I have no idea - and maybe you don't want to talk about other programs? If so, I understand - If not and you are objective - I have some concerns about using Expression Web. Probably most are nothing more than a lack of understanding since I have never used the program. I am thinking about using Dreamweaver for the process since I am familiar with the program and already have it. Here is a link for the conversion process for Dreamweaver. http://www.jsm-hosting.com/technical-info/convert-FrontPage-dreamweaver.html Another answer - this is the details for Front Page - "Microsoft FrontPage 5.0" - meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252" I wish I could find an expert to do this for me, but I suppose, that would probably be too costly since I have a large web site. There doesn't seem to be an easy answer to this dilemma. If you have never used fp themes then thats a route you don't have to take. however moving from fp to ew or anything else not just a matter of moving from themes and other bots like the navigation bot..... Unless you know what you are doing its quite easy to have ended up with older coding specially if you moved through the version of fp. There are many different scenerio's it all depends on what yours is on how you move forward.... because if you do have themes then removing them with fp first is better... and if you have a old dwt then there is a neat method for moving to the new one with much less work... there are tips and tricks for cleaning your code more easily too. What fp version(s) have you used and what is your latest one? If all you need to do is clean up your code..... then making a brand new template that validates .... removing the old template (did you use fp03 and use dwts? - there is method to move between dwts) and cleaning the code on your content then putting your new template and old content together..... This will give you an insight http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web_Development/Software/Expression_Web/A_2840-Migrating-from-FrontPage-to-Expression-Web.html We were thinking about bringing out a ebook just for moving from outdated coding to valdiating standards coding ..... its all a matter of perception really. If you tell us exactly what you are using and what your site is we can give a better answer have you moved to Expression Web? If you have and have ew3.0 then you know you can upgrade f ree to ew 4.0? If you havent you can upgrade at a reduced cost (you can even do it if you have a adobe product). If you are going to continue with multiple co-ordinators, then you need to use a program you all have access to. If you go with Dreamweaver, I would still look to using a DWT. Of course, if you turn it over to someone else in the future . . . . . >Another answer - I do not have Expression Web but do have >Dreamweaver 8 and see that I can use it to migrate my pages to a >different format. I did find this on the Adobe site http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/140/tn_14031.html. Looks like all you have to do is open the current site in DW> I would make sure you have a good backup of the entire site before I stated editing or making major changes. No program is going to magically clean the code for you. I looked at some of the pages and they are in pretty good shape although most do not validate. Cleaning up the code and moving the styles to an external sheet should take care of that. I would stick with Dreamweaver as it is what you know how to use. You are not currently using a DWT which is what I would recommend but that is up to you. Remember when usng any type of javascript menu, you will need to make sure it degrades nicely OR offer a plain text menu to at least the main portions of the site. This is in case the viewer has javascript turned off. Does this help any??? Pat

    3. Pat, the several coordinators was from the past - I am the only one now. The DeWitt County web site is very nice. I am still in kindergarten when it comes to writing code so this is a difficult situation for me. Another question - since I have your ear - Can you tell me what is wrong with my javascript on the 3 returns at the bottom of these World War I pages? I wrote a footer for the pages that is done in javascript as you will see. And last night I set up an external style sheet for that section and have 3 or 4 on the web, but can't get the return to work. Here is one - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/WWI/ball.wm.htm Donna ----- Original Message ---- From: Pat Geary <pat@the-gearys.com> To: rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, July 2, 2010 10:41:37 AM Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] CSS Conversion At 11:25 AM 7/2/2010, you wrote: >Here is the answer to one of your questions - I have a large web >site over 11,000 pages. I thought you meant that you HAD. >>From the instructions it appears that the process might possibly be about >>the same for Dreamweaver as with Expression Web. Yes thats what I meant you can easily move to any editor because you are dealing with html and css and not propriorty code. >Maybe you are trying to sell Expression Web - I have no idea - and maybe >you don't want to talk about other programs? 1/ I don't and never have sold Expression Web. 2/I don't use other programs, (I do use Expression web and have used FrontPage).... so I wouldn't know how to use them. I can talk about html and css sans an editor however. Note I never said I don't want to talk about other programs >If so, I understand - If not and you are objective - I have some concerns about using Expression Web. Probably most are nothing more than a lack of understanding since I have never used the program. Yes of course, exFP and EW users know its all about the nut behind the wheel not the actual car that does the driving ;~) > > I am thinking about using Dreamweaver for the process since I am familiar > with the program and already have it.
