All seven boards in the GenConnect suites were combined into one master board in the new RootsWeb/Ancestry Message Board system, and the Query board administrator was deemed to be the appropriate ongoing master board administrator. Instructions for legacy GenConnect administrators who did NOT receive this notice: Reasons why you didn't receive the notice might be: 1) Your e-mail address as administrator for the query board is bouncing and/or was not a valid working current address. 2) The boards you administered were empty boards (contained no messages). Empty boards were not transferred since only DATA and not BOARDS made the move--i.e. there was no data to move. (Note: in some cases involving empty boards a notice WAS sent to the administrator incorrectly advising him to register this board and in other cases the empty board was omitted from the notice.) 3) You were not the Query board administrator--only the data board administrator. Hint: if you have multiple e-mail accounts please check all accounts as the notice may be hiding where you least expect. For those administrators who did NOT receive the notice, an opportunity was granted via the BOARDS-ADMINS list and the RootsWeb HelpDesk to receive a second mailing of the notice. The time window for that second opportunity has now expired. Any administrator who has not yet received a notice should follow the precedure outlined here to reclaim any boards for which he administered the GenConnect Query board: Go to the main admin board: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=admin.board&r=rw&p= Navigate to the admin board for the board you wish to claim (readopt) and click on the link that says Become An Admin. Submit a request to adopt the board. It may take a while for the adoption request to be approved. It will be processed as quickly as possible. IMPORTANT: you MUST be ON the board you wish to adopt when you click on the Become an Admin link for your request to be prcessed correctly. Instructions for administrators who DID receive the notice: The notice included a personalized URL for your use only--you cannot share it with anyone else. Go to the URL being very careful to copy the complete URL exactly as listed in the notice, as it is lengthy and line breaks and spaces were often inserted into the URL in the e-mail. Be sure to remove any line breaks and spaces before accessing the URL. The URL should take you to a site with a form that reads: Message Board Registration. If the URL doesn't work, follow the instructions above for those administrators who didn't receive a notice. If the URL does work follow the instructions below. If you have an existing Ancestry account you may use the user name and password for your existing account to register as administrator for your boards. Please be careful to take note of exactly which user name and password you have entered on this form if you have multiple Ancestry accounts. If you do NOT have an existing Ancestry account, or if you do but wish to maintain a separate account for purposes of maintaining your boards, please create a new account. Setting up an account is completely free of charge. The purpose is to create a database whereby account information may be updated universally. Select a unique user name. If the name you choose is already in use select another or use a user name suggested on the form. The user name should not include spaces or non-alphanumeric characters--only letters, numbers, and underscores. Select a password for your account. The password should not include spaces and should only include alphanumeric characters (numbers and letters)--no foreign or extended characters or symbols. The password must be between 5 and 8 characters. IMPORTANT: When setting up your registration, keep in mind that the name you record on the registration (not the user name--the name), and the e-mail address, will be the name and address that will appear on any posts you make on the boards you administer. Once you have completed the registration of your boards and received the confirmation screen with a link to the main admin board from which you can navigate to the admin boards for the boards you administer, you are properly registered and reunited with the boards you had previously administered under the GenConnect system. However, you will want to take some time to familiarize yourself with the admin board and set up your own HTML 'Links & Announcements' page with information for visitors to your board. Click on Edit Links & Announcements to create or edit this page. Information to include: 1) contact information--your name and e-mail address, 2) links to allied Web sites your board users will find helpful, 3) instructions and welcome message for your board users. You 'own' this page--be creative! If you are not experienced in the use of HTML subscribe to BOARDS-ADMINS-L@rootsweb.com where you will find other administrators who will be willing to help you get your page set up and provide you with ideas and templates for your page. While you are anywhere within the admin board hierarchy you will see a blurb that says "you are not an Administrator on this category/board" until you are on a board for which you DO serve as administrator. The note will then change to blue lettering which will state: "you are a Board Administrator on this board." ONLY on boards where you see the blue notice can you perform administrative functions. Administrative functions, responsibilities, etc. are outlined in the texts located at the links for Message Board Help and Message Board FAQ. The Help texts on the admin board pages are contextually relevant to Message Board Administration. For help in use of the boards, please see the allied texts on the user boards. Joan
