I just forwarded Diane's note to this list --- because it bounced to me with a subject line of Subject: {not a subscriber} Re: [RW-Help] MSN email for the exact reason she mentions. MSN inserts additional information into the 'from' header. From: "dgonthier" <dgonthier@email.msn.com> Now -- there's two ways to approach this. 1) The MSN subscriber can contact every list administrator and ask that his/her "alternate" address of userid@email.msn.com be added to the *accept list* 2) The MSN subscriber can set up his e-mail program with an explicit "reply to" address of userid@msn.com -- preferably before subscribing to any RootsWeb mailing list. Well, I overlooked a third option -- the list administrator can forward any messages which bounce with the {not a subscriber} tag in the subject. Howver, now that I've discussed this here, I'd like everyone to take discussion of list administration to listowners-L or newbie-listowners-L and use this list for it's stated purpose of assisting folks with webmastering at RootsWeb. Thanks, Leigh
Leigh, With all due respect, this issue is not just for those that maintain a mail list. I have had the same problems on my GenWeb site. It applies to wherever there is an e-mail address registered. And, the only way that it can be prevented is for the webmaster to refuse any MSN e-mail addresses to be posted on the website. This is pretty severe solution, but MSN is a problem for webmasters too! - Ron Dailey Webmaster Floyd County VAGenWeb P.S. - By the way, Leigh, thanks for the info on how MSN e-mail works! I use to be an MSN subscriber and even then I didn't understand some of the things they did. -----Original Message----- From: Leigh Compton [mailto:elsi@augustmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 7:05 PM To: RootsWeb-Help-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [RW-Help] MSN email I just forwarded Diane's note to this list --- because it bounced to me with a subject line of Subject: {not a subscriber} Re: [RW-Help] MSN email for the exact reason she mentions.
