Graphics not showing in my RootsWeb Guestbook I have been going over the help documents provide for users, in particular: A- Webmaster FAQ B- Basic of mail merge C- Mail merge CGI Scripts, V 1.2 by Lincoln Stein D- Betsy's really basic Help for web pages at RootsWeb Some background for you: I am using Web Express v3.0 to create my Site. I HAVE NOT PUBLISHED IT YET !! i.e. uploaded to RootsWeb ! Now for some questions: NOTE, I use WS_FTPle ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1- I have noticed a repeated referral in Help Documents to a folder called "public_html" to upload too. I have not been able to locate that when I have logged as follows: ----------------- My Homepage freepages.rootsweb.com Automatic detect windsorhuntgenealogy password xxxxxxxx -------------------- or as : ---------------- FTP: users.rootsweb.com Server:Unix Anonymous: unchecked Account Name :windsorhuntgenealogy my pass word Directory: Public_html ------------- In both configurations produce that same results ! I find a Folder called "genealogy_html" but nothing called "public_html" Am I doing this right? Which one is too be used for uploading pages ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 2 - Notice that my username is windsorhuntgenealogy but my Web pages will be called My Windsor and Hunt Families Genealogy Will this present any problems? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3- Guest Book Since I have problems with the graphics being located on the RootsWeb provided Guest Book even when the graphics were located in a folder call Images under the "My Windsor and Hunt Families Genealogy" folder This is my Website structure: >My Windsor and Hunt Families Genealogy > Images [this contains All files such as .gifs , .jpgs, .midi's , even the ones for RootsWeb products.] >index page >surname page >Guestbook page >My Family Photos page I believe this meets the condition that my Graphics be in the same Directory ! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For a RootsWeb Guest book, Is there a cgi bin at RootsWeb where people can view anyone who has signed my Guestbook? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` I looking into trying mailmerge so that message will be mail directly to me. I have a question regard a couple statements: One place says "do not use CGI scripts" Another says mailmerge is "CGI script but special" does this mean mailmerge is an exception ? Please clarify this ! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I can create a mailmerge with my program [Web Express Form Handler] that suit my needs. It is called "mvforms" which is based on Perl "if host is running Unix 5.0" Which I understand Rootsweb does ? This creates a CGI bin on my site that is called "cgi-bin/mvforms.cgi" In that bin is the following hidden fields: .forms_type=email .email_dest=duanewin@gateway.net .subject=form response .intro=The following information has been submitted .thanks_url= thanks.html .remove_indexing This Guestbook is mailmerge [complete to me ?] ! Would this create any problems ? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Thanks so much !!! Duane Windsor Carson City, NV duanewin@gateway.net When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging. - U.S. Grant
From: "duanewin" <duanewin@gateway.net> > NOTE, I use WS_FTPle > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > 1- I have noticed a repeated referral in Help Documents to a folder called > "public_html" > to upload too. > I have not been able to locate that when I have logged as follows: Public_html is a folder for Homepages and WWW accounts. Freepages is set up differently and you will want to upload to users.freepages.rootsweb.com/genealogy_html/ or whatever community folder you prefer -- arts_html, pets_html, history_html, etc. > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > 2 - Notice that my username is > windsorhuntgenealogy > but my Web pages will be called > My Windsor and Hunt Families Genealogy > Will this present any problems? > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nope. windsorhuntgenealogy is your account name which appears in, and is part of, your URL. My Windsor and Hunt Families Genealogy will be indexed in the Freepages index under *M* for *My*. See http://freepages.rootsweb.com/howlist.html to be sure you are listed/indexed as you prefer. > 3- Guest Book > > Images [this contains All files such as .gifs , .jpgs, .midi's , even > the ones for > RootsWeb products.] > >index page > >surname page > >Guestbook page > >My Family Photos page > > I believe this meets the condition that > my Graphics be in the same Directory ! Nope, you must add the subdirectory to the path for the file link. See http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~pasher/links.htm > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > I can create a mailmerge with my program [Web Express Form Handler] that > suit my needs. > > It is called "mvforms" which is based on Perl "if host is running Unix 5.0" > Which I understand Rootsweb does ? User generated scripts (CGI) are not allowed on RootsWeb Servers. RootsWeb does offer their own CGI script which you can modify to suit your needs -- form input can be mailed to you, or posted to a web page. Directions for both on Freepages is here: http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~elsi/free-mailmerge.html Regards, Pat Asher
