I'm new at FTP. This is my first time trying to upload. I can't find public_html on my screen. My letter from Betsy at Accounts said "when you look in your directory, you'll see a subdirectory called "public_html. Cannot find the subdirectory, and have spent all day at this, including two calls to CuteFTP help line. They said it was not their problem, and to find the directory path to the remote directory...and to me, that's ALL Greek. Also a letter to RootsWeb Help, which evidently went to the same place public_html is lurking...have not had an answer. Can't find the site, either: users.rootsweb.com/~nycalexa Help? We've maintained NYJeffCo GenWebSite for years, but never had to open a site. We're stumped. Nan Dixon

Nan: I just looked and your nycalexa account *does* have a public_html directory. So - let's see if we can figure out why you can't see it. 1) In your FTP set up, how is your Cute FTP configuration set up? You want to make sure that you haven't told Cute FTP to go ahead and place you inside the public_html directory. If it did so, then you wouldn't see it. By the way, the nycalexa account is set up almost identically to the nyjeffer account. If you are successfully using Cute FTP to access the nyjeffer account, just copy your configuration over and change the account & password. 2) How long have you had Cute FTP installed? If your copy is not a recent one, we'd recommend that you update it. Old levels of Cute FTP have problems with file dates in 2000 and 2001, making those files invisible to the Cute FTP program. Here is how to setup CuteFTP on the site settings screen for your RootsWeb site: Label for site: I use the name of my site like, Plymouth town or Plymouth County for I have both. Use whatever name/label you want. FTP Host Address: users.rootsweb.com FTP site user name: the name given you by Rootsweb FTP site Password: password you set up with Rootsweb FTP site connection port: 21 with the above filled and the site name highlighted click the "Edit" button under it: Host Type: Auto-Detect Default Remote Directory: public_html Default Local Directory: Hit the browser button the find the folder on your own computer where the files are located for uploading There now it is all set up. It will automatically access your "public_html" folder on RootsWeb showing your site in the right hand column of CuteFTP and showing the Folder/files of what you want to upload in the left hand column of CuteFTP.
