I just had someone unsubscribe from a list I maintain because she was getting too much junk mail. When I challenged her that I would notice any junk mail becuase I am on the same list, she clarified that what she was getting other emails since she subscribed to the list as follows: >I can say I have received independent e mails from the listed >sites below. They are found in the bottom portion of many of the >e-mail's I received from the [listserver]. >http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog >http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library >http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com My interpretation of this is that Ancestry.com is building email distribution lists from the email that gets forwarded through their system every time someone posts a query or other message to a board that has automatic forwarding. I do notice that all such messages get an Ancestry tagline appended to the bottom of the message. My uderstanding was that these listservers were supposed to be protected from SPAMmers, but if the fox is guarding the chickencoop, then we have no way of protecting our subscribers from unwanted advertising. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | The Ahern Family Genealogy Website Acton, Massachusetts | http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
those are taglines. Worldconnect is not an ad at all. It is a resource site. The others are Ancestry's and one of them isn't an advertisement at all. It's a library resource! And they are NOT using emails to build up their distribution lists. If you want to get advertisements from Ancestry - go to their site and click on the list of newsletters to be sent. NO one on Rootsweb lists are spammed unless they subscribed to Ancestry's OWN lists. Grandfathered mailing lists don't have commercial taglines added at all. Those are the ones that were before the merger of over a year ago. Nothing to be alarmed about. This has been going on for long time and nobody bothered until her. Yahoogroups have the most obnoxious taglines anywhere because they insert theirs above the list's own taglines. W.
