Hello, My site has been sorely neglected and I need to update things. One thing I'd like to add is some sort of "Search this site" option. I am horribly limited in html although I'll be going back through tutorials as I redo my pages. I used a pretty easy wysiwyg program last time and everything went well until the guest book came into play. I figured out enough html to fix the problems there also with the support from this list. I've just wondered how much has changed. I know that the options for fancy things are pretty limited, but I would like some sort of search option. Thanks. To show a mouse-over text on images or image-maps, use the title attribute, like this: <img src="angry.gif" alt="Angry face" title="Angry face" /> http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_img.asp The alt tag should be used to make you images accessible to those who use screen readers. http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol6/html_no1.htm Try validating your page without using the alt tag and you will receive a warning. Hello, This list has been quiet for awhile, so sorry for disturbing the peace. I have put pictures on my GenWeb front page for the first time. I think I did ok with the pictures themselves, with help of others from OHGenWeb. However, I have some hover captions on them that work fine in Internet Explorer, but do not work in Firefox, IE-Mac, Mozilla, or GoogleChrome. We did this in straight HTML code, no page making software. Where did we go wrong that the other browsers don't understand the code? Try using title="caption text" instead of alt="caption text" in the img tag. Title is the correct attribute for hover captions. What browser and version are you using? Your FORM element has: ACTION="/cgi-bin/{omitted}/query.tmp"METHOD=POST The lack of a space after the ACTION value and before the METHOD parameter could be the problem. Try fixing that, first. John
Hi Pat, I see your test posting, I received the email from your test, and it looks like it worked just fine for you. One researcher said it didn't work for her, so I tried to post a test message. I filled out the form but nothing happened when I clicked "submit." I've tried a couple times since, and it has never submitted. But if it worked for you, then I guess I don't have to worry about it. Thanks so much, Pat. I have a form for submitting a query on my website on Rootsweb.com, but it is no longer functioning. Someone told me they thought Rootsweb no longer supported those cgi forms. Is that true? Thanks, Mona
Iff you add pictures but have NOT SAVED a page FIRST, it will make your links be: [begin Link] scr: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/(your PC's Name/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/Website Folder Name/folder/name. (htm or html or jpg or gif) [end link] Instead, open a new page, savee it first before adding a link or image, then add your photos and links, then save again. Now you should have all relative links if you added them right. Relative linnks might look like ../../folder-name/image/smith.jpg If you used abolute links, it will be the full URL like: www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~your-account/cemeteries/tombstones/smith.jpg If you have ones with Documents%and%Settings/ etc you need to re-do the links and re-upload the page. Ideally, you'd want links which don't refer to either a local folder or to an address at ancestry.com; then the same pages could be viewed online or offline and transferred up or down without worrying about this problem. These are "relative" links and it would probably be easier to explain if you give us the address of a problem page. -- Bob Sullivan Schenectady Digital History Archive <http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/> Schenectady County (NY) Public Library

I hope I can explain this clearly enough for you all to understand, because I do need help. I have web sites on which I have cemetery surveys. I post tombstone photos on these pages using the CuteFTP program which I have used for years. I store these photos in a folder in My Documents on my computer. So the links on the public file start out c://mydocuments/...... Sometimes the links in the public file have been changed (by Rootsweb?) to start out rootsweb.ancestry.com/......... and I can't access the photo on my computer. Why does this happen? Sometimes I need to make changes in the cemetery survey html file (not the pictures themselves) for some reason and then when I reload it to the public file, the photos are no longer accessable there because of the change in the photo links. I have to download the picture from the public file to my computer and change the name again. Lots of extra work. Can anyone explain this to me? I hope it makes sense. Thanks for any help. </HTML>
Hi Jim, > I sent my message to Listowners-L but not all my messages get > through to that list or maybe they get moderated out and sent on as > appropriate. > I'm happy with the Listowners list except for not getting through to > them many times. If you read the Listowners' list, you'll know that spam and the Rootsweb spam filters are frequently discussed there. And just as frequently turn into a discussion beyond the scope of the mailing list, after which the discussion (quite reasonably, IMHO) gets shut down by that list's administrator. There are ways to manage your exposure to spam as a Rootsweb list owner - that is on-topic for the LO list if you've missed those discussions in the past and want to ask for assistance. If you don't read that list (I can see that you do, but others reading this thread may not), you can access the archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/Listowners/ If you have a problem with interacting with the LO list, write to the admin for assistance.
