Someone tell me where to find the instructions for doing that? Please? I had them once, used them somewhere once, but darn if I can find it now! Thanks from Cheryl-the-memory-challenged

Cheryl, you had me trying to create a small site with PAF to see if I could see what might be wrong. You need to clearly say so if you don't want help! It sounded to me like you wanted help! Sharing a couple oddities that yesterday dumped in my lap. If you've have either of 'em pop up, at least I won't feel so lonely ... Scenario -- I wanted to create an easy-to-use webpage for the family to share at her 85th birthday party. So I used the default web-generator in PAF5.x which links the pictures so you had to click on each name to see the pics. It also fails to put in the usual [back][index][next] links. Since I generally hand-code my pages (and have since 1995 or so) -and- since PAF's code is pretty basic (no css, no JS, no Java, no Flash), I figured fixing those as a walk in the hallway. First page, great. Worked like a charm. Second page, first half went great. Midway down the page, though, I added the photo at the end of the 'graph, and del'd it from right-after-the-name, and Shaaazam -- the whole section went right-justified in a hanging-block. Next name, and the other 5 pages, worked fine again. Took me an hour to fix that one section and it's still not /precisely/ aligned with the ones before and after, but at least it's within a dozen pixels! Had me 'nother glass of ice-tea and an Oreo and came back to tackle the nav links issue. On the first page, inserting what I wanted in there was a snap, so I copy'n'pasted into the other four. One worked great, exactly as expected. The other three, though ... I can't get rid of the program-coded ones and I can't make the new ones appear. Since it's real hard to muck up copy'n'paste (g), I'm more miffed than baffled. Keeps on another day and I'll be ticked not just miffed. (g) Maybe if I drop some S'thrn Comfort into my tea? Cheryl
Yes!!! I am jumping for joy! Thank you so much, Pat. Our Query form now works - all the answers in an e-mail have been received. We would never have figured it out on our own. Did this e-mail list change >teh To: into a bracketed mailto along with the regular address? Yep. The template should have the email address only -- No mailto:, no brackets. I also spotted a couple of other things. In your form, the path for the form action= directive is incorrect. The paths were changed a couple of years ago, but not everyone updated their instruction sheets. You may have been following an old one. On the WWW server, your FORM ACTION= tag should read <.form action="/cgi-bin/local/mailmerge.cgi/~ohcdrt/ogsvol.tmp" method="post"> I have inserted a leading dot following the opening bracket above to keep your email reader from trying to execute what it identifies as HTML. Remove that dot when copying the path to the actual form page. The other thing I spotted was in your template. The last two dot/period section delimiters appear to have a white space following the dot/period. Each section delimiter must be on a line by itself with NO white space. Since I am downloading/viewing the template with a browser, that is a binary transfer, so I can't be positive. Extra white space can happen if you do a copy and paste; or it can happen if you use a word processor to create your template. The template MUST be created in a plain text editor such as Windows Notepad, and saved and uploaded as a plain ASCII text file, regardless of what file extension you use to identify it on the server. If you used a word processor, create a new template using your text editor and upload that one. If using File Manager to upload, check the "use with Mailmerge" box for that file only. Pat Asher
Hi, Pat, Thank you for your kind assistance. It feels like we are a step closer, but I still did not get an e-mail. Did this e-mail list change teh To: into a bracketed mailto along with the regular address? The page after the captcha now reads: On Tue Nov 29 15:54:15 2011, the following message was submitted via the mailmerge server running on nobody@www.rootsweb.ancestry.com (Nobody): NAME: Cyn's Name [This is what I answered.] ADDRESS: @99.13.42.76 [I answered 123 I forget, like Anystreet.] MESSAGE TEXT: None of the other questions are answered. Hello, Folks, Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I thank you all for comments to help with my photos on my Lake County site. Hopefully now if you are not doing graphics you will have a substitute message. Your help is much appreciated. My new problem - Ohio Genealogical Society needs volunteers for the Conference next year. I am the co-volunteer recruitment chairman. I put a page up requesting that folks send us an e-mail but we are not getting much response. We have gotten several people let us know that our "form" does not work. There was no form, but folks did not get it. So I am requested to put up a fillble form. I have a set of instructions, and I thought we followed them pretty closely, but it does not work. The form looks ok. It does elicit a captcha test and says that the following message has been sent. I think it sends the name, but the address has an @ with 4 two digit numbers separated with dots. The other questions are not answered at all. No e-mail arrives, either. I think there is something wrong with the template file. I did upload both the form and the template to Rootsweb. I went to FileManager, refreshed, clicked on the form file, and said Use with MailMerge. I don't see anything else I can do. Can anyone help? It is at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohcdrt/ogsvol.html The template is called ogsvol.tmp Thanks in advance for any assistance.
