    3. I'm the person that started the question about blank pages. Robert Forrest contacted me about the blank page on his web site Early Western Murray County History that was linked to my county page. I could not answer his question so I put it out to Rootweb Help. Your suggestions and comments were forwarded to Mr. Forrest. I would like to thank the people that responded but some of the answers got off the subject and started an argument. As of yesterday afternoon Mr. Forrest has taken down his page with no communication to me. I do not know if he is going to fix the problem or just drop the site. He may have thought, as I, that some of the answers were putting him down for not being webpage knowledgeable when all he wanted to do was put his grandfather's book on line for people. His site had been up since 2001. I became a county coordinator in 1999 for the purpose of helping people find free family history in Murray County not to be a webmaster. I'm still using what some call outdated programs, such as FTP95, Webford, and Front Page. My page is not pretty but it is simple to use and I receive 2 to 3 emails a week asking for information. I don't have the hours, money, or the desire to update. Right now I can live in the 90's. Someday I will have to make a change, if things stop working, but in the mean time I would rather spend my time and energy to help people connect with their ancestors. 3. Quite right, there isn't. OTOH, I didn't say the *name* was the extra layer. On the third hand, things may have changed enough in the past couple years that one thin and obvious layer isn't worth the effort. 3. By the way, Dora, I got a chuckle from reading how you said "bleeping CSS". I felt that way too. It seems alien and hard(er) to understand, versus HTML. Just give me plain English, ya know? But I'm slowly learning CSS. It does make pages load faster, cleaner. Judy

    3. Dora, Word doesn't automatically add CSS code. MS Word adds MS Word proprietary code, which bloats code completely. However, CSS shortens HTML coding, even the plainest HTML. Judy

And that explanation doesn't include "the page will not work at all" ==================================================================== The first line at http://www.htmlbasictutor.ca/doctype-declaration.htm says::: "The DOCTYPE Declaration (DTD or Document Type Declaration), what it does <emphasis added>and why each web page needs it<emphasis added>." Please state the line where you see it say a DocType " says clearly that a doctype is *not* needed". Reading informational text as to "what will happen if you don't do this" means there's a reason for telling what negative consequences can result if you don't do something. As a different example, if I wrote on an automotive webpage the following, using the same logic would you state I don't really need a car key or electronic key? Example: Without a car key you won't be able to unlock the car door. Your car won't work because you have no key to start the ignition. If your doors are left unlocked, without a key you won't be unlock the door if the lock is accidentally activated. You won't have access to a locked glove compartment. You won't be able to unlock the trunk (unless your car has a trunk release and your doors are unlocked). The page just says "if you don't have a doctype these negative things can happen". So if you want to deal with problems, including validation errors.... Judy

    3. Not one of my pages have the doctype tag, and, miracle of miracles, the pages display! And the search engines find my pages just fine. It's amazing. If I'm researching one of my more obscure ancestors, guess whose web pages are generally the top seven that come up in Google. Doctype isn't relevant to much. The search engines don't use it to find your web pages. Now, mind you, I wouldn't be caught dead using no CSS. Plain old 1990's style HTML is what I learned, in the 1990's, and it does for me just fine, thank you very much - and that is what both my genealogical software and my web editor use. I won't use Word or any of the other web page generators because their bleepin gd CSS and whatever else take up 100 MB a page! I don't think so! There's no reason for it - and don't anyone start in with none of those imaginary reasons that outer space aliens are constantly making up. Since it is relatively simple to add the DOCTYPE, it would seem prudent to do so rather than ignoring it. The article pointed out, and the further reading suggested there, also says that there are differences and consequences of not using a DOCTYPE, or in some cases one that specifies a particular version may cause a users browser to interpret incorrectly by not being in the "Standard" mode. Reminds me of an episode of "Big Bang Theory" -- Penny keeps ignoring the 'Check Engine' light until one day the car sputtered and died. One thing to take into account is the definition of modern. Some of the neophytes (and also long time users) using genealogy web sites are not always into downloading updates to stay "modern". Many users are still working with IE 6.0 and early Mozilla browsers. Design needs to take into account these factors. For what its worth, Jeff o.

    3. Which says directly that a doctype is *not* needed, which is my point. All modern browsers will render the page without the need for a doctype. Did you read the page? It says clearly that a doctype is *not* needed. It even explains what will happen if you do not use a doctype. And that explanation doesn't include "the page will not work at all" -----Original Message----- From: Pat Geary <pat@the-gearys.com> To: rootsweb-help <rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 1:03 pm Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Pages blank or dead At 03:19 PM 3/31/2014, you wrote: >True, you don't need a doctype and validators are silly so long as you >don't care how your page displays on any browser besides yours. 3. True, you don't need a doctype and validators are silly so long as you don't care how your page displays on any browser besides yours. If you do care a doctype is needed and a validator is very helpful. Jim Rickenbacker On 3/31/2014 1:06 PM, Wjhonson wrote: > It's incorrect that pages *need* a doctype. > It's optional. 3. It's incorrect that pages *need* a doctype. It's optional. All modern browsers will display the content without the doctype line. Although the silly validator will complain if you don't have a doctype :) I hate those things.... they are so so picky. -----Original Message----- From: JFlorian <cageycat@gmail.com> To: LIST: rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com <rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 11:02 am Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Pages blank or dead A comment is (without leading dots) <...!--This is a comment. 3. I have experienced this in the past. The problem seems to be that older versions of HTML would recognize the 3 letter .htm extension, but later vers. will not. Suggest you try changing the extension to html and try it. If this is not your web site page, download the page, and then rename it by changing the extension, then reopen it. 3. Remove those extra bgcolor lines, you only need one. Then it works fine -----Original Message----- From: Dora Smith <tiggernut24@yahoo.com> To: rootsweb-help <rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Cc: charlarson <charlarson@frontier.net> Sent: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 10:14 am Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Pages blank or dead Sent this 10 minutes ago and it fell into hyperspace. CCing the person who posted this time in case the gremlins are holding onto it. That page is coming up blank for me on my PC, in both Firefox and Google Chrome. Internet Explorer, too. Windows 7. Firefox and Google are current; not sure about Internet Explorer but it might be. So I examined the page source code, saved the page to my desktop, edited it in Notetab Lite (any text editor would do), removed some odd looking lines, and the page now works fine. Take out the top line, doctype, which you don't need and may be why the entire page won't work, and the two body statements that have !, and the line of &nbsp, and you're good to go. Once that's all gone the page works. Looks like your web editor is doing something odd that isn't allowed - and you've got three versions of your BODY statement, it looks like only the one with no ! is supposed to be active. Possibly it's that the browsers are no longer supporting some esoteric HTML code feature.
