What I meant was the previous URL you used had the format http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/minutes/.... So unless you have an account called "minutes" these accounts at this level I believe are used directly by Rootsweb, not given out to individuals. As someone else noted the account name should start with the tilde character "~" as you have it now "~mocchs" That's your account. So I think Pat already mentioned that that part was missing from your URL previously. -----Original Message----- From: PastTracker <pasttracker@windstream.net> To: Wjhonson <rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, Apr 2, 2014 11:33 pm Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Problems uploading Hello Wjhonson, This is not freepages. "Has anyone experienced this" has three possible answers: 1. Yes. Which says nothing about why, therefore is unhelpful. 2. No. Which is equally unhelpful. 3. Or, "Here's what might be wrong/ or is likely wrong." "HELP" Lists about web pages typically exist for Number 3. If we'd all answered, "No I've seen that happen", what good is the list for "help" when web pages typically fail because of or resulting from a coding issue? Personally, I hope the guy can figure out the issue so I can visit his pages. Looked interesting. Now someone has to explain this!! Early Western Murray County is back on line. I got an email from Mr. Forrest and he did not take it off. Here is some plain html which css cannot shorten <html><head>My Title</head><body>My Content</body></html> -----Original Message----- From: JFlorian <cageycat@gmail.com> To: LIST: rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com <rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 9:35 pm Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Pages blank or dead Dora, Word doesn't automatically add CSS code. MS Word adds MS Word proprietary code, which bloats code completely. However, CSS shortens HTML coding, even the plainest HTML. Thank you Dora! I completely agree! Plain HTML is easier to read and correct to my way of thinking. -----Original Message----- From: Dora Smith <tiggernut24@yahoo.com> To: rootsweb-help <rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 9:27 pm Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Pages blank or dead Not one of my pages have the doctype tag, and, miracle of miracles, the pages display! And the search engines find my pages just fine. It's amazing. If I'm researching one of my more obscure ancestors, guess whose web pages are generally the top seven that come up in Google. Doctype isn't relevant to much. The search engines don't use it to find your web pages. Now, mind you, I wouldn't be caught dead using no CSS. Plain old 1990's style HTML is what I learned, in the 1990's, and it does for me just fine, thank you very much - and that is what both my genealogical software and my web editor use. I won't use Word or any of the other web page generators because their bleepin gd CSS and whatever else take up 100 MB a page! I don't think so! There's no reason for it - and don't anyone start in with none of those imaginary reasons that outer space aliens are constantly making up. If one wanted to re-create a page from the 1990's, and only include block and in-line elements, one could omit the doctype and probably get away with it. Of course, why would anyone want to :-) If one doesn't specify a doctype, forget using html. The page won't validate either. You can't link a style sheet to the page, and the browser rendering the page will display it in Quirks Mode. I enjoyed the 1990s, but... If you do care a doctype is needed and a validator is very helpful. Jim Rickenbacker On 3/31/2014 1:06 PM, Wjhonson wrote: It's incorrect that pages *need* a doctype. It's optional. All modern browsers will display the content without the doctyp e line. Although the silly validator will complain if you don't have a doctype :) I hate those things.... they are so so picky. -----Original Message----- From: JFlorian [1]<cageycat@gmail.com> To: LIST: [2]rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com [3]<rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Mar 31, 2014 11:02 am Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Pages blank or dead A comment is (without leading dots) <...!--This is a comment.
