Tim, It must be a problem with password, ftp address, or rw host address. For examples-- -- a password for freepages won't work for county accounts, or vice versa (I made this mistake once) -- using the wrong syntax for the addresses, for example an extra space or wrong address completely -- password wrong, with a space, or not respecting MixEd CaSe Have you tried turning off your Antivirus and Firewall just long enough to see if you can sign in? Sometimes AV programs during updates make changes that interfere. If so, you put the host/ftp address back into the AV/Firewall accept list. Did you try to sign in under the www version of File Manager? Did you try a different FTP, like Filezilla, just to see if you can connect? Did you ask (OFF list) Pat Asher to try the password? Pat knows the different rw accounts the best. She'll try to help if you ask her. Judy
The net effect of Rootsweb not being able to provide working passwords for several accounts is resulting in coordinators throwing up their hands and building their sites elsewhere. At least a dozen counties have already done this in at least 3 states perhaps 4. I'd rather not move because the larger sites take a while to code with a move but one has to wonder how much longer one should wait? If passwords are finally restored, those folks will grab the files and go. Thus far 2 to 3 weeks have passed with nothing but canned replies. Tim
"Last year I added to our website (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~laaltga/join.htm ) a mail merge form to permit online registrations and payment by PayPal. It initially worked OK. We did have some problems with Captcha sometimes because we couldn't read the words. But now the Captcha program does not appear to be working at all. No matter how many times I type the numbers or letters into the box, it seemingly does not recognize the word or letter that I have typed and submitted. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or does anyone know if there was a change made to Captcha? Elaine

Hi Pat, Who does one contact at Rootsweb to check on a non responsive "list owner"?? I am getting complaints that messages to WVFayett@rootsweb.com are not being answered. Les Shockey

Tim, OFF-list, why not let Pat A. see if she can access your site? This list is just webmasters. Randy from RW used to monitor this list--not sure if he still does. Judy
So the latest from Rootsweb help? is that they thank us for our request and have sent it along to the appropriate development team. So who knows how long before a real reply is forthcoming? Is no one from Rootsweb help on this list? Locked out now for two weeks. Judy, Yes I found the www after I first replied to you yesterday. Using the correct FTP connect to that I do for all my counties, the info sent to us by RW does not work, making sure caps lock is not on, typing the password character by character in. The NC also reported the same thing happening on some Utah accounts. We're just waiting - 2 weeks now to get passwords where we can upload files and/or remove others. Some of those retrieved from Passwords Central worked, some did not. Now waiting to hear from RW Helpdesk. Thanks for trying to assist all. Tim, Like Pat said, US/State GenWebs are on "rootsweb" accounts. Just have everyone change the FTP host path. Like in Filezilla, I have the various "freepages" directories "websites", then the "county" genweb site. In Filezilla, each one is set up separately. If you use one Editor to share FTPing your freepages and your "rootsweb" county site, you'll need to reenter the county ftp url info in the FTP window. When I used Frontpage to upload, I used to forget and entered the freepages pw when I needed my rootsweb county pw. The Help Desk will be very reluctant to issue a new pw --- Try what Pat suggested and I think you'll find you're okay. Then, pass the word to others in NY genweb about the correct FTP info. Oh and if you want File Manager, make sure you search for it with the correct wording. Freepages --- "rootsweb freepages file manager" which is: http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi And the www is searched for as just "www file manager" which is: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/fileman/file_manager.cgi?cache=4617 When I search for the freepages one, it is first in results and the www version is second in results. Judy

Pat, While that may sound odd that it worked but now won't is true. This has occurred on more than one count account. The SC and both ASCs have tried the account. I use WS-FTP - get 530 Login authentication failed ! Login failure, so quitting It does say before failure that the username nycounty is ok. One the CC and I both used to make sure it worked. She and I both were able to download the site and now the password does not work. Since Judy says we can't change the passwords, I doubt anything an FTP client could do would change this. So, hopefully the HelpDesk can help by just giving us new passwords tomorrow. Yes, which said it was for Freepages - but this was not a freepages account but rather a county account. We have multiple instances of this happening in NYGenWeb. Tim On Sun, Apr 5, 2015 at 7:00 PM, JFlorian <cageycat@gmail.com> wrote: > Did you try it in File Manager? > -J >

I have logged into various RW hosted accounts at various times over the past week and have not had any problems logging in to any of them. That is not to say you couldn't have problems, but remember that they may have originated from your end. As Judy said, be sure you are entering your password eXacTly, without any additional whitespace which can happen when you copy and paste. If you have retrieved your password(s) from PasswordCentral, copy and paste them into Notepad (or the equivalent) to be sure you have not included that fatal whitespace. However, you may have "assumed" your password did not work. Are you sure? What was the error message from your FTP client when you tried to login? Pat
Did you try it in File Manager? -J
Ok, I guess we'll have to request a new password from the ones they just issued a week ago that don't work. Some worked for a few days then around the 1st, went off line. Tim, I believe RW sets it. You can't change it. You can only request a resend if lost. Fixes: 1. Don't copy in space before or after pw.. 2. It's precisely CaSe SeNSitiVe 3. Try typing it in directly and letting the browser save it rather than copying it. and 4. Try signing into RW's File Manager. If it works there, the same pw should work for FTP. Judy
1 - are users allowed to change their FTP password? 1a - if so, how? 2 - if a password sent to the by RW doesn't work, how to rectify? Thanks, Tim Stowell
Hi Judy, I think what Susan wants is a website alias i.e. the content hosted on "rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzlhvrsg" appears in all respects to be coming from "huttvalleygenealogy.org.nz". As far as I know this is only possible if both domains are located on the same server. If I have a domain redirect back to RW, >shouldn't it flip over to the RW URL in the URL browser box?? It does, and that is what she wants to change. Framing is not actually a redirect. The frameset tag on a web page works very much like a frame that you hang on a wall in your home. You choose what content you want to appear in the frame. In Susan's case, she has uploaded a skeleton web page with only the basic tags -- html, head, title, body, etc. to her domain host -- but added a frame and chose to display the page she had uploaded to RootsWeb in that frame, making it appear that content hosted by RootsWeb was hosted at her domain name. As long as that is the page that is being displayed, the address bar shows the society domain name in the address bar. But because all of the links in the RW page are relative, when a link is clicked, the browser goes to the page on the RW server and shows the RW URI in the address bar. I don't know if there is a way to do what she wants, i.e. always show the domain name in the address bar, without uploading a mirror site to the domain hosting server, which is why I told her to talk to tech support for her domain host.
