    3. Pat, Google nygreen2. Then looked at the cached version of the first hit. There was a website there - not part of GenWeb - just a genealogy site. The question is whether or not the public_html directory still exists. If not, then Not Found is what you'd get. If it does exist but it is empty, then you should get an empty directory listing. So it looks like public_html is gone, and perhaps nygreen2 as well? John On Nov 03, 2015, at 17:50, Pat Asher via wrote: > At 05:35 PM 11/3/2015, Sylvia Hasenkopf wrote: >> That is my website. Judy, can you give a link to Pat G's instructions, please? Judy, you've used abbreviations FF and RW - what do they mean? Cheers, Susan -----Original Message----- From: rootsweb-help-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:rootsweb-help-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of JFlorian via Sent: Thursday, 29 October 2015 01:17 To: Sylvia Hasenkopf; LIST: rootsweb-help@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] How to download my webfiles from the Rootswebserver Susan, Forget Frontpage for this. Download Filezilla. (free) Set up the FTP. If you don't know how, either search in Rootsweb List archives for mails about it or (easier) sign up and post a request on the Freepages-Help List for the instructions. Pat G on the list has instructions posted on her website. When you connect to Filezilla, your LIVE site will be on the right side. You will double click the RW folder to open it and be "inside" your site. On the LEFT will be your PC side. You can now choose 2 ways to do this-- either choose the folder that Frontpage uses OR make a new folder NOT inside Frontpage. The 2nd way might be safest if FF already contains files. So on the right side, choose any number of files/folders by highlighting them-- or choose all of them. Highlight the first one, scroll down, hold ctrl key down and highlight the last one. Right click on any selected files. Make sure you highlighted the intended folder on the left. A menu will open. I think it has download or some such wording. Choose download and all the files will will start downloading at the bottom of the screen. Filezilla is extremely fast and thorough. If you highlight it, it will be done. (pun to Field of Dreams) When everything is downloaded, you can move the existing FF folder out and close FF. Let's say that folder is named "susan". Move it out for safekeeping. Then, rename the new folder to "susan" and move it back into Frontpage. Look in FF, check over the files. Compare them to the old "susan" file you moved out. Selectively decide which old-susan files need to come back in. If in doubt, check the dates and file size. Open old-susan files in your browser and FF files to browser if you need to compare. When done comparing and choosing what to move back in... Open FF, and recalibrate links so FF will recognize its own files. IF for any reason FF won't open your site, don''t panic. FF is finicky. Go to your Documents in Windows, click one of your FF site files to force FF to open it. If it doesn't open FF, try another one. All you need is one file to behave to get FF to behave properly. After you recalibrate, look through your files. Check for broken links. Re-orient your own mind to what you have completed before and IF you made any changes since the last upload. Keep a list as you come across needed changes or thoughts about where you were before the crash. Time: Setting up Filezilla and learning how to do it: maybe 1 hour Downloading the site: less than 15 minutes once you click download Getting FF to reassociate the files it itself: varies, could be immediate Checking the site over: several hours Smile. Relief. If you previously used FF to upload, you may need to do several upload attempts before FF gets its act together to recognize the live site. Again, don't panic-- it will work eventually. 3. Hi Sylvia, I don't know anything about the capabilities of Frontpage, other than it is a tool (piece of software) to make it easier for you to make webpages for your website. I do not understand why you don't seem to be able to view a full listing of the files. Does Frontpage have some "filters" that you can use when listing files within a folder/directory, eg only display files with a date-modified before 1 Jan 2007. What happened in 2007 - did you have some software change(s)? Do some spot checks. Verify for yourself that a webpage you uploaded way back at the website-start date still exists/displays on the RootsWeb website. Likewise, other pages that you have uploaded much more recently. When you have "uploaded" your webpages you are "copying" your webpages from your computer to the Rootsweb server. Likewise when you are "downloading" your webpages [as we are hoping to get you able to do] you will be "copying", this means you leave the original at the source location and transfer a copy to the destination place. [Compare this with "moving" which is physically shifting everything at the source to the destination and not leaving anything at the source.] You are wanting to COPY. You are now needing to copy back to your new computer of ALL the files you've uploaded. You say you have over 3000 pages; what about all the images, too? This is going to be a BIG job getting ALL these files back onto your new computer!! Time-consuming! You will need to work out a plan of how you intend doing this and keeping track of where you are up to as you do the copying. Also, you will need to make frequent backups of these files after you downloaded them -- do you have a plan on how you will do that? If Frontpage doesn't seem to have a download option (ie copy back from published website) then you will need some ftp software installed on your new computer. I'll continue this email on the assumption that you are going to need some ftp software that is independent of Frontpage. There are free versions of ftp software. Use Google to find them. A commonly used one is FileZilla, I believe. Do you feel confident installing software or do you have someone who can do it for you? Also, when you (or whoever) set up this NYGREEN2 website you would have received some details from RootsWeb telling you that "you will need to know these things": Hostname U s e r I D P a s s w o r d Can you lay your hands on this info? Just answer Yes or No. I don't want you to tell us what the userid or password is -- I just need you to have the info available, because you will need it when the ftp software is installed, and you want to access your website.
