I think the problem is that Ancestry makes it sound like you have to have a credit card to get in. If you contact them they will give you a login and password without one. Many people don't have credit cards and don't want any. Linda

In addition to what Richard advised, you might also want to notify the list admin so that the infected person may be unsubbed until he cleans the virus from his computer. Joan
PLEASE nobody flame me, but help me understanding something! I just received an email from someone with the Badtrans virus. Being suspicious I didn't open it so I'm not worried, but it came from the MI-Genealogy list. I know you're not supposed to get viruses from the lists, but according to Norton: "Due to an increase in the number of submissions, W32.Badtrans.13312@mm has been upgraded to a Category 4 threat. It is a MAPI worm that replies to all unread mails in your email message folders, and drops a backdoor Trojan." I had posted a message to the MI-Genealogy list and my message from (apparently another subscriber) came back to me with the virus attached. So, even though the Rootsweb lists don't allow attachments, I got hit because the other person received a message from me (via the list) and her mail box sent out the virus?!! Does this mean everybody on the MI List is going to get hit from her? Thanks, Sandy -- Sandy Redmond Webmaster, Calhoun County MIGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~micalhou

If someone on the list sends a message to the list, they will get a "hit" directly from her, when the message is forwarded to her. You should advise her of the problem and how to correct it. -Richard -- Richard Harrison/Encinitas, San Diego, California USGenWeb Northwest/Plains County Coordinator Rep IAGenWeb Immediate Past State Coordinator Jones Co. I have always found Ancestry.com to be one of the most ethical sites on the Internet. I would not fear giving them a credit card number over a secure transmission. Without a credit card number to guarantee the payment of their merchandise, you would have the alternative to wait until they received payment after your check cleared, before shipping the merchandise. Is that what you prefer?? Delayed Shipping. I am probably ultraconservative when it comes to giving out information to unknown vendors and companies, but Ancestry has been around a long time and I purchased things to my satisfaction from them before their Internet days so they are one of the most trusted sources on my list.. Works for me. Go to www.about.com and search for "ping." You can see if a site is up or down by "pinging" it from your computer. Wendy Loveless ----- Original Message ----- From: "S. W. Thank you to everyone for your help. It turned out that I had deleted my public html file. Someone was kind enough to restore it for me. Now I have a web site up but I don't know how to edit it. If someone could tell me how to edit already loaded pages using Front Page I would appreciate it. I am not sure which of my many attempts to upload my pages worked so if you have FP please tell me the procedure. I worked on this months ago and have forgotten the little I had learned. Hopefully not hopeless Carol
Thanks, everyone, for your help. I really appreciate you. The problem is now solved and I have a few more tips to add to my 'fixit bag' because of your kindness. -- Shari

Have you tried 1) emptying your cache and 2) completely shutting down your system and restarting? Pat. Your gifs, as in: http://www.rootsweb.com/~flstluci/usgw.gif calls for the USGW gif (and the others) to be in the same file folder as ~flstluci/ If you have the gifs in a file folder, images for example, you would have to put images before the gif...as in ~flstluci/images/usgw.gif/ I don't understand how FrontPpage loads backgrounds, but I put my backgrounds in the same folder as my gifs, therefore the call string would still apply. There are the image statements and image files that you reference at the start of the index2.htm: <img border="0" src="FP1910.gif" width="450" height="182"> <img border="0" src="usgw.gif" width="70" height="70"> <img border="0" src="flgw.gif" width="70" height="70"> Was also wondering why you named it index2.htm rather than index.htm. Anyhow, With the web browser, I looked at the directory http://www.rootsweb.com/~flstluci/ and saw the list of your files. You have about 25 "gif" files and several other types. There is no FP1910.gif, usgw.gif, or flgw.gif, so maybe your file naming hasn't been correct. There is one file called usgw (no "gif" extension) with the date 28-May-2001 There is an flgw.ban, and an flgw16.gif, but there is no flgw.gif There is one file called FP1910 with no extension, also a file called 1910 with no "gif" extension. I'm not familiar with the AOL FTP, so maybe it's something there... Hope this helps - Gloria --------------------------- At 06:13 AM 5/30/01 -0400, you wrote: >I'm a Newbee and I need some help. background located at "_themes/sumipntg/sumtextb.jpg" FP1910.gif (case sensitive), is this in same folder as index2.htm? just the first 2 I noted. At the risk of being objectionable I thought I would share this message from ancestry with the list. > You have been selected to receive a FREE 14-day Trial of Ancestry.com! > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=685&sourceid=982 > O.K. - I think, I'll look at it again for 14 days and decide whether or not to sign up for a year or whatever. So I start filling out the form; everything was going great until I got to the part where it asks how I will want to pay if I decide to sign on. Guess what, the only acceptable choice is a credit card number! No place to put "personal check" "money order" or anything else. You either give them your cred card number or seems there is no "free trial." Last week I was at the LDS branch library here. The main topic of conversation I heard was about the fact that one of the volunteers there had ordered some books from ancestry about six months ago and had yet to receive the books. Seems one was on back order so ancestry has waited all this time to get the book; won't mail the book they do have and refund the difference; and wanted another check for the amount of the book they do have. For some unknown reason the lady decided to risk it. So now Ancestry has TWO of her checks and she still has NO books. Give them my credit card number? I don't think so!!! Sure makes me miss the "good old days" when Rootsweb the best free source of genealogy information on the internet and was not associated with ancestry.com! Here's what I just replied to their email: > I filled out all the required boxes until I got to how I would want to pay if I decided to continue my membership at the end of the trial period. There was NO place to mark that I would pay by personal check. WHY would you send this crap; (as spam it seems) and then require someone to enter their credit card number "just in case" they decided to continue subscribing?? That just may be the most low-down, impolite, unethical thing I've seen yet from ancestry. You have no idea how sorry I am that you bought rootsweb!!! A LOT of serious genealogists feel that way. Perhaps, some day, we will be able to do something about it!!! > > Please do not bother to send me your "FREE" offers if giving you my credit card number is required. Linnie
