    1. [RW-Help] When does Genseeker index my pages?
    2. Charles R. Weese
    3. I have the Genseeker index engine added to my USGenWeb pages, but the index has not been updated for a long time. I see an announcement on the seeker.html page that says "At this time, the index created by the search engine has grown larger than the disks installed on the Seeker computer. Therefore, no new registrations will be accepted until the search facility has been upgraded." This page was last updated 27 April 2001. What about existing users? If we can no longer use the GenSeeker search engine, is there another one available to index our pages? ======================================== Charles R. Weese, 4012 Pardee Rd., Stow, Ohio 44224 See http://web.raex.com/~cweese/weese/ and http://web.raex.com/~cweese/vance/ for my family info. I maintain the following USGenWeb county sites: Gallia County Ohio at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohgallia/gallia.htm Jackson County Ohio at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohjackso/jackson.htm Vinton County Ohio at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohvinton/vinton.htm

Hi, Wil- It isn't. If you look closely as the addresses this spam is being sent to you will see that all addresses are list 'request' addresses and 'admin' addresses. Neither of these addresses will cause the messages to be posted to the list. They will only go to the admin. Joan

The instructions for the MailMerge template are very precise, and your problem is very subtle. Each command must be on a line by itself -- the program reads the line breaks as separate commands. The section delimiters (the dot/period) must be on a line by themselves with no additional white space. Create your template in a text editor, such as Windows NotePad, then save as a TXT file, and upload in ASCII mode. The result should look like this: # template: submit.txt ACTION=mail # Set up defaults SUBJECT=ASGS Surname DB Submission WORDWRAP=72 TITLE=ASGS Surname submittal has been sent. You will have to do this manually. Mail Merge can send you the form input in an email, or append to a file. It can not send you an attachment to an email in a specified format. Pat Asher

    3. Thank you, Pat. I took out all the html code and re-uploaded. I am now getting e-mails with the data in the body of the message. However, there are two anomolies going on here: 1. there is additional text below the submitted info that appears mailmerge is adding to it (see below). 2. on the page that is returned to the person that submits the info, there is a link back to the form that goes to a totally different form than I created. Any ideas on how to correct those? This is still just "phase 1" of making this work. What I ultimately want to do is to have the data that is input on the form be saved to a file (surname.csv) and for that file to be e-mailed as an attachment. I can't find any instructions on how to e-mail the file; only on how to send an e-mail OR to save a file. BTW, I don't want to necessarily append to the file each time, I want to *overwrite* it each time. The csv file will be used to import/append the new data into an existing database. >X-Apparently-To: asgsaz@yahoo.com via web20309.mail.yahoo.com; 01 Sep 2001 >09:07:14 -0700 (PDT) >X-Track: 1: 40 >Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2001 10:07:12 -0600 >To: asgsaz@yahoo.com >From: Another Test <slhessick@earthlink.net> >Reply-to: slhessick@earthlink.net >Subject: ASGS Surname DB Submission >X-mail-agent: mailmerge v1.0 > > > >Another Test >875 wash st. >apt. 4 >tucson, az 85701 >12345-ABC >800-555-1212 >slhessick@earthlink.net > >jackson mass >bye norway, main >hessick indiana, kentucky, germany > > > > > >On Sat Sep 1 10:07:11 2001, the following message was submitted via the >mailmerge server running on nobody@www.rootsweb.com (Nobody): > >NAME: >ADDRESS: @24.221.155.182 > >MESSAGE TEXT: Sherri

    3. In regard to your using Front Page Express to edit your pages and then the page appearing in Arial rather than in the font you've chosen when formatting: This sometimes happens due to slight incompatabilities that still exist between browsers: ie, Netscape vs. Explorer. A basic HTML manual may help. When you use a text editor (like front page, I use Word), it automatically converts your formatting to HTML. I usually have to go in to "View HTML" and fix small things that will affect how the page appears. If the computer that is trying to load the page can't read the font you've chosen, it automatically defaults to a more standard font, usually Times New Roman. (In this case, apparently it liked Arial). Incidentally, if you are editing the HTML directly, you can list as many fonts as you want, first choice through last, and the computer will cycle through all of them until it finds one it can use...or, if there aren't any, default again. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: <RootsWeb-Help-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <RootsWeb-Help-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 02, 2001 3:01 AM Subject: RootsWeb-Help-D Digest V01 #184

    2. When a web page comes up in a search engine's results, the title of the page is first up. Your's, I believe, will read "index." You will probably want to say something else there to represent the site, such as "Yarram Genealogy Group." Doug

    2. ASGS Webmaster
    3. Hello, I am trying to set up a form where the results will be e-mailed as a comma delimited file so that they can be imported into an offline database. Needless to say, I am having lots of problems with it. I set up the form initially using FrontPage 2000, but discovered that Rootsweb doesn't support the extensions for that feature. I then tried to use the MailMerge instructions on Rootsweb, but those instructions only tell you how to e-mail them or to append to a file; not to e-mail a file attachment (make sense?). I followed the straight e-mail instructions anyway, figuring I could at least get started that way, but am encountering an error when I hit the submit button: "Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, admin@admin.rootsweb.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log." Is anyone familiar with this and can they help me figure out what I am doing wrong? Also, does anyone know how I can send the results attached to the e-mail? The URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~asgs/form/surname.htm. Thanks. 3. Google is unique as search engines go in the use of spiders and prioritizing web pages. All search engines use spiders that wander the Web and collect words and URLs. The proof of the pudding is in the ranking. Most search engines rank a website based on the number of times a phrase or word appears on a page. For example, if you put "Britney Spears naked" on your page 12,000 times, then you would likely attract a lot of adolescent males, and maybe even females. Google ranks its results based on the number of links to a page. In other words, if a whole lot of webmasters have added links to your page as being a good source of info on Britney Spears, or aborigine spears, or whatever, then they will rank your website higher than one that simply has the greatest number of words. The idea is, that if a webmaster thought enough of your site to create a link to it, then there must be some value there. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | The Ahern Family Genealogy Website Acton, Massachusetts | http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    3. When I did my web pages for the Daughters of the American Revolution, my husband suggested that in addition to the "Meta name=keywords" line, I have a line that read: <META name="description" content="..."> where the ... was replaced by similar words to the keywords line. He has found from his experience that some search engines look for "keywords" while others look for "description". I hope this helps. Good luck. 2. Batesy, Have you gone to a search engine and submitted your URL? That comes first. Always put information in the meta tags before the body of the page. I submitted a page to Alta Vista a couple of months ago. I don't know how long it took for them to index me, but it was not terribly long. It's in there now. Last time I knew Alta Vista doesn't assess sites before it indexes them. Yahoo does, but Yahoo is useless anyway. Popularity doesn't matter in regard to being in the Alta Vista database. Once you're in Alta Vista, you'll come up in Google, which is widely considered to be the best engine at the moment. I haven't tried to submit anything to Google. I think they just use other engines en masse in one-stop shopping style. Alta Vista also has, or used to, tips on being sure all your pages get into the system, and that's were the meta tags come into play. As for getting your page known in other ways, that's another question. Good luck, Doug

Most search engines list sites in order of: 1) words matching 2) number of hits made to that site (popularity) Get all your members to visit the site regularly and then you'll see it get to number 1 in the Yarram top-ten. There's nothing wrong with your code! Other suggestions - join lots of newsgroups - and advertise there! I run the Central Scotland FHS site, and I e-mailed GENUKI, Rootsweb, Cyndie's Pages, EVERY Scottish FHS, the GENBRIT newsgroup (which has hundreds, if not thousand of subscribers).... and some more, when I set the site up originally - then when we moved to our new site at: http://www.csfhs.org.uk/ - (yes, even our own name now) - I sent out another e-mail to all those places/people again!
