I've finally got my pages to update, but now my pages can't find the links that I have on my pages. I know I've done something different, but I can't figure out what I did. My page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctmiddle/midlsxco.htm
Recently, I've been doing some updating on Hampshire County, and I find that each time I FTP or "Save As" the page, I get not the text I uploaded, with line breaks and all, but a single continuous hideously long line that contains the entire text of the page (OK, sometimes, it breaks into two or three lines, generally all equally long). Makes it REALLY difficult to add anything or fix something! Anyway, I sit here using cursor-right/enter/cursor-right/enter until I get lines that at least fit on the screen, then I have to go through and put the /P/ at the end of the line and the /br/ where they belong instead of in the middle of the line and the /h1/ or /h2/ near what they define ... VERY time-consuming! I was on the old 386 -- where I've made no changes to config in YEARS! (g) [My mood wasn't improved by the fact that after I'd reformatted one page and tried to replace the data with new data, none of the computers would read the new file!] Any ideas what's happened? For using MailMerge on the WWW server, you can refer to the Basic Mail Merge page at http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/basicmm.html >I suspect it's something fairly simple, and I hate to bother you all >with it, but I need help. You have this: <.form action="http://www.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/mailmerge.cgi/~inschs/groupsheet.tmp" And what is needed is this: <.form action="/cgi-bin/local/mailmerge.cgi/~inschs/groupsheet.tmp" Now, you can include the 'http://www.rootsweb.com' stuff if you want to, but it's not necessary. It will be assumed since that's the server that your form is sitting on. >And here's the address for "my" (Sullivan County Historical Society) >site: > >http://www.rootsweb.com/~inschs/ > >Oh yes, the name of the Family Group Sheet Template is "groupsheet.tmp" >and I uploaded it to the "public_html" part of my site (as "text" using >Fetch). Pretty good -- but there are a couple of problems with the template. 1) You've got some carriage returns in the middle of the TITLE. You have to put the whole thing on a single line. Same problem with the ADDRESS. 2) The period ending the OUTPUT_FORM section is not the first character on the line. It must be.
Greetings All! I want to thank everyone who took the time to help me with my vanishing pages in Netscape 4.7. My HTML code was bad on more than one page. I had a lot of nested tables and lost track of some, dropping a few closing tags. And there were some other errors too, as pointed out by those who took the time to help me. I dug out Netscape 4.7 and will scrupulously run all my future output through it before showing it to the world! I also got the HTML Kit, with the Tidy tool. It helped me find the bugs fast. It also put in some unnecessary code and messed up my counter code. But I fixed those things in a plain text editor, and I think (hope!) I've got a system now that will keep me out of trouble! Many thanks to all of you! Eve G. -- Eve S. Hello there, I seem to have gotten myself all tangled up in a MailMerge form... and my limited knowledge of html is not getting me untangled... I have borrowed the html code for theFamily Group Sheet form offered by Patricia (?) Asher at http://freepages.computers.rootsweb.com/~pasher/fgs.htm I tried to adapt it to work on my RootsWeb site, using a variety of "help" pages (all RootsWeb-related)--but I just can't seem to get it right. (Maybe it only works for FreePages?) I suspect it's something fairly simple, and I hate to bother you all with it, but I need help. (Please.) Here is the URL for the FGS form on my site (it's not actually linked to the rest of the site, since I'm still "test-driving" it): http://www.rootsweb.com/~inschs/familygr.htm And here's the address for "my" (Sullivan County Historical Society) site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inschs/ Oh yes, the name of the Family Group Sheet Template is "groupsheet.tmp" and I uploaded it to the "public_html" part of my site (as "text" using Fetch). Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Kathleen (Kathy) Larson, Webmaster Sullivan County Historical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~inschs/
In case I didn't get back to everyone who offered suggestions, just wanted to say thank you. I have had a few who had the same problem as I have had, but most reported that everything was working O'K. It seems those who had problems were using the 4.73 version. Still have to twig a few things, but I am getting there. Will leave those pages alone, since so many say they are working fine. A great BIG THANK YOU to everyone for their help. Cleadie B.

Well, the problem USUALLY is not using paired table tags appropriately. In your main.html document, you have 6 open table tags <.table> and only 5 close table tags <./table> There's also other HTML problems - particularly with your name anchors. You have the opening tag, but not the closing one. For example, you have coded <.a name=top> What you should have coded was this: <.a name=top></a> I used the HTML validators at W3C (http://w3c.org) and at Dr. Html (http://www.drhtml.com). It takes a bit to learn how to read the reports, but once you do, you'll find these tools extremely helpful. Regards, Elsi

They >can't see all the frames in my Surry County, VA, Historical Society main >page at >www.rootsweb.com/~vaschsm/ >Is this a limitation in N 4.7, or is my HTML code at fault. According to the validator at <http://www.htmlhelp.com>, you can't have a border attribute in a frameset tag. Netscape 6.1 and Opera 5.12 show the frames properly. I don't use frames, so I can't say whether this is a limitation in NS 4.7, or NS 6.1 and Opera being more tolerant of a coding error. This doesn't seem to me to be a frame problem, since both frames are showing in Netscape. It's only the text in the right hand frame that's not showing. When you look at page source for the right hand frame, you find that it's the usual problem between Netscape and MSIE. There aren't enough closing table tags for the tables that are coded in. That will keep anything within the tables from showing in Netscape, and I think most other browsers that follow html standards. There have to be as many closing tags </table> as there are table tags. <table> Connie

Wellll.... I too can't see all the frames on the your page with my 4.7 but can with my IE. Is it a limitaion with NS 4.7? No, not necessarily so. There are lots of coding that NS can see that IE can't. It is always a good practice to have both browsers on-board if one is creating webpages so ones work can be checked with both browsers. Coding for adding music, and other bells and whistles can be quite different with between the browsers. I took a quick look at the coding on the frame page of http://www.rootsweb.com/~vaschsm/main.html and spotted one error. You have "<body ..........> and <body> near the top with only one </body> at the bottom. The second "body" may be the problem for when I copied the code into a webpage in FP it automatically deleted that second <body> and allowed the frame to be viewed in NS. Here is some of the coding I'm talking about: ------------------------------------ <BODY BACKGROUND=images/tan.gif> <BODY> <a name="top"> <TABLE BORDER="0" CELLSPACING="4" CELLPADDING="4" WIDTH="100%"> <tr><td> </BODY> </HTML> ------------------------------------ All you need is the body in the background statement: <BODY BACKGROUND=images/tan.gif> Try deleting <BODY> and see if this doesn't help. Always remember HTML coding is like signs in higher math a positive needs a negative. <BODY> is a positive and </BODY> is a negative. Every positive < > needs a negative </ >. More positives < > then negatives </ > almost always causes problems in HTML coding. --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Mansfield, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/mansfield.html USGW New London, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/newlondon.html USGW Norwich, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/norwich.html USGW Windham, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/windham.html USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ *********************************************************

Hi Susan, Thanks for the reply to my message. I did upload the index.htm page, but I don't always see it. I've been uploading the same way that I have in the past when I was using Flash.Net as my isp using WS_Ftp. I'm giving up my flash.net as I'm now using cable, but for some reason I don't seem to be able to update the Middlesex County page on Roots Web. I've even tried to upload the update by using Front Page and doing ftp:// When I use WS_FTP it says that the file transferred properly, but I don't know where it went. I would prefer to do everything with Front Page 2000, but I have a lot to learn. Harry
Hi Marie, You might write to Nathan Zipfel at nate@pa-roots.com or check these two sites: http://www.pa-roots.com/~lancaster/books/ee/index.html http://www.pa-roots.com/~lancaster/ When I viewed your page source I didn't see any Meta commands. Search engines often use Meta commands to link to various sites. When someone is searching for Lancaster, you might like for your site to be listed right up there near the top. For more details about Meta commands check out the "Goodie" file at http://htmlgoodies.earthweb.com/tutors/meta.html In fact, just about anything you want to know about HTML can be found in the Goodies. For the master list, go to http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/master.html Best of luck Marie with all the traffic you're going to get. On Rootsweb one's main page should be the base address which for you is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctmiddle The main/home page actually uploaded for a base address would be index.htm which for you would be: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctmiddle/index.htm The homepage extension can be either *.htm or *.html. With using index.htm, the longer address does not have to be used. When I access your base address up comes a directory of what you have: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctmiddle You don't have a index.htm page up. If you check allllll the other RootsWeb USGenWeb sites you will see what I'm talking about For instance, my sites for the town of Plymouth and for Plymouth Co. can be accessed with either the base addresses of: http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ or the longer addresses of the actual files: http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/index.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/index.htm Other examples: USGenWeb for the state of CT: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctgenweb/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctgenweb/index.htm USGenWeb for New London Co.: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctnewlon/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctnewlon/index.htm Nowwwww there may be problems if you are uploading/FTP directly from FP. FP's default is to change the name of the homepage of a web to default.htm when it publishes it/FTP. Lots of ISPs want the homepage to be index.htm(html). If you want to FTP/publish directly from Frontpage then there are settings somewhereeeeee in FP to change or stop changing the default name of the homepage of a Web. Here are sites connected to AT&T "Wurd" help for their ISP with instructions on publishing/FTP with FP98 and FP2000 - from changing the name of a homepage: http://www.wurd.com/eng/pwp/fp98.htm http://www.wurd.com/eng/pwp/fp2000.htm I use FP98 but FTP from a standalone FTP Client. I publish from FP to a folder on my computer then have setup the FTP client to upload from that folder. This allows me to pick and choose exactly what I want uploaded. I believe if done directly from FP it uploads and updates everything and lots of time I don't want some experimental stuff to upload. --- Susan SGTAYLOR1@att.net My Genealogy Website - sgt http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/ ----------------------------------------------- USGW Mansfield, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/mansfield.html USGW New London, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/newlondon.html USGW Norwich, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/norwich.html USGW Windham, CT - http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/windham.html USGW Coordinator Plymouth Co., MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ USGW Plymouth, MA - http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ *********************************************************
Hi Can anyone tell me who I would have to email to get a link to our webpage listed under Pa Historical Societies? I would like to make our site easier to find by people looking for information But couldn't figure out who to email the request to Our web address is http://www.rootsweb.com/~paslchs/index.html Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Marie Malark volunteer for the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society
I have uploaded my page, but now I don't seem to be able to update it. I created another page with frontpage and then tried to add a link to it on the main page, but I can't seem to update the main page. I'm using ws_ftp. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctmiddle/midlsxco.htm is the main page.
Thanks a lot to everyone who replied and said they were getting the photos O'K. Just my poor old computer I guess :-( Also, I know there are a lot of broken links on this site. I just took it over on Saturday, and I worked on the photo page first. Got about half the links fixed today on the main pages. Just "upteen" more to go :-) Again, thanks for the reassurance.
