Earlier today I requested help in making a link from my website at freepages.rootsweb.com/~desmarais to the RoostWeb home page. I had toruble linking (I thought) because my own address kept appearing in fornt of the RootsWeb URL. Well, I had two incidents of my browser open to check my work and that may have had something to do with it because the link works fine now. Phew! I also found the link to Dr. Watson's on the freepages help pages, so am now able to check my html and links. Thanks, Barb Desmarais _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
First of all, thanks to all of you who are on this help list. Your correspondence has helped me learn so much about html. Now to my question: I've created a simple website at www.freepages.genealogy.com/~desmarais and want to link with the RootsWeb home page. I'm doing this via File Manager. I don't know how to create the link without a part of my freepages site address becoming attached to the RootsWeb address. I don't actually enter parts of my own address. Perhaps there is a default that does this? Also, I recall reading not too long ago about a site that checks the code for errors. I don't seem to have it bookmarked. Does someone still have that URL? Thanks again, Barb Desmarais _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
I recently had to have my hard drive cleaned and relaoded. I backed up my Cute FTP program and Cute HTML program and re-installed them both. Cute FTP works fine, but I am having trouble getting the files in FTP to go to my site. I type the files in HTML, code them, correct errors, and then FTP them, but the ones I have corrected are not making it to my web site. I view them from within Cute HTML or Cute ftp and the corrections do not show. I do have the new version of Cute HTML 2.3, but it was doing this before I downloaded it. HELP! Please. Hi All, I just heard back from the Help Desk about homepages: "The Homepages server is down temporarily. The techs will bring it back on line as quickly as possible. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Rel@ively, Patrice
There are some internet wide problems today. At least one of Rootsweb's servers is affected. There are phone line problems for many ISP's, too. Some pages might be hosted on a different server such as a guestbook. You can have your site monitored by services such as the one at internetseer.com; they will let you know when it's back up via email. The one you had should work just fine, i.e. FORM ACTION="/cgi-bin/mailmerge.cgi/~holler/query.txt" or "query.tmp" if you prefer. You can use almost any extension for your template EXCEPT "html". The template looks good now, except it still appears that the file transfer itself was done in binary mode. Are you uploading using File Manager? You can not upload your template in File Manager as it only transfers in binary mode. Your template MUST be uploaded in ASCII mode. Pat, I have made the changes you requested and still get the "internal error or misconfiguration" error. Took out all extra spaces, uploaded both input and template files as ascii. Renamed template file as "query.tmp" ... still no success. I'm sure I'll be embarassed when a super-simple solution is found ... but for now, can you assist once more? Save the file as plain text. Then upload in ASCII mode. The current online file was uploaded in binary mode, and that will prevent it from working. Pat

I've tried to put the counter on my family genealogy web page with poor results. It ends up like this: "You are our [an error occurred while processing this directive] visitor -- thanks for stopping by!" (I did a cut and paste so there was no error there.) My family page is located at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~patbauer/ However, I've been able to put the same one on two other sites that I am webmaster for and they work fine. These are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~waccgs/ and http://www.rosietheriveter.net. Is there a difference somehow between the Freepages and those which are the non-profit ones with no advertising? Any advice would be appreciated. Pat -- Patricia McKee Bauer in SW Washington state
