After all these years of drilling it into my students' heads that they need to do binary FTP transfers when they upload images and executable files, I had completely forgotten that ASCII transfers still served a purpose! Making that one change definitely did the trick. Thank you much! It actually works fine without the period prior to the MAIL_HEADER section. If I understand the processing part correctly, the period is used to signal an end to the various sections (INPUT_FORM, MAIL_HEADER, and OUTPUT_FORM) when they are followed by another section. Since I'm not using any sections prior to the MAIL_HEADER section, it works ok without the period there. Thanks again for putting an end to my beating my end against the wall! I don't have a 3400C, but my 6300C's Precisionscan software includes OCR capability, and HP's site confirms that the 3400 does also. I don't have it in front of me, but it's in one of the menu options. In my opinion, from my brief testing of it the Precisionscan OCR is probably OK if you're doing laser-printed or typed reports in an office, but if you're working from an elderly history book, you should really break down and get OmniPage. You can usually find a good deal on eBay for one of those packages which will allow you to upgrade from any other OCR software. Whether it's worth $50/60/90 depends on what your time is worth, I guess. I do enough proofreading as it is, and I'd like the software to handle as much of the work as possible. YMMV. What am I doing > wrong? > > My form is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/eventform.htm > My template is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/eventform.tmp Drew: I found two problems with your template: 1) You're missing a period between the template variables and the MAIL_HEADER section of the template. 2) All your template text runs on as a single line instead of being on separate lines. This indicates that your file was uploaded in binary mode rather than text/ASCII mode, which prevents the end-of- line characters from being converted to proper unix format. Whenever you see this in your response: -------------------------- On Sat Nov 24 10:12:03 2001, the following message was submitted via the mailmerge server running on nobody@www.rootsweb.com (Nobody): NAME: ADDRESS: @24.252.43.83 MESSAGE TEXT: ------------------------------------ you can be sure that your template was not processed. 1. [RW-Help] Mailmerge won't recognize OUTPUT_FORM
    2. I've having trouble getting Mailmerge to do exactly what I want it to do. When my form is filled out and submitted, the resulting e-mail actually contains the period at the end of the MAIL_HEADER (from the template) as well as the words "OUTPUT_FORM=". I'd also like to get rid of the NAME, ADDRESS, and MESSAGE TEXT that is getting added to the bottom of the outgoing e-mail. It looks as if the Mailmerge processor isn't actually recognizing the end of the MAIL_HEADER and also not recognizing OUTPUT_FORM, and instead, is merely echoing everything that follows. What am I doing wrong? My form is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/eventform.htm My template is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~flsgs/eventform.tmp Thanks in advance for any help. 3. You will probably get a lot of responses to this. But what I do is open up the "size" option on the tool bar of my scanner and through the options I resize it to a respectable 400 x 200 or 200 x 150 pixels. If it's already saved on my desktop, I will right-click on the picture and open up the 'properties' That will tell you its current size. When bringing it into my web page <img src="xxxxxxx.jpg"> add after the jpg" (space) Width=200 Height=150> so it will read <img src="xxxxx.jpg" width=200 height=150> That's what I do, others may have a better solution. Sherri: The MailMerge script works exactly as you see and cannot be modified. You can, however, use some JavaScript to verify the form input fields before they are submitted to MailMerge. You can find lots of these on the internet. See this one as an example: http://javascript.internet.com/forms/basic-validation.html or this one http://javascript.internet.com/forms/no-entry.html Regards, Elsi

We have people accidentally hitting the "enter" key rathe than the "tab" key to move between fields on the form. The "enter" key causes the form to be submitted and we get incomplete e-mails. Can I have the "submit" button go to a confirmation page first to display what they have input to give them a chance to return to the form and correct it or to go ahead an submit? 1. [RW-Help] Re: RootsWeb-Help-D Digest V01 #238
    2. Hi Arlene. I had the same problem, being as I am a total new-comer. It turns out that I didn't hit the "refresh" button (or F5 key) so I was seeing the old page that had been previously loaded instead of the updated page which everybody else was seeing. Hope this helps. Gail McCormick <A HREF="http://rootsweb.com/~sdbrook2/Index.htm">Index</A>

    3. Hi Arlene, I'm a newbie, too. I've found it's really easy to make corrections right in RootsWeb's own file manager program. You can preview the page before saving the changes, which is great. I've had mixed luck trying to upload anything from Microsoft sources as they sometimes use their own extensions on the end of files and RootsWeb may not accept them. I have since tried several times to upload the updated files, but I have failed to overwrite the files at the site. I am using MS FrontPage and WS_FTP Pro. I would really be grateful for advice! 3. Dear List: I am wondering if the server for my Lamar Co. AlGenWeb site might not be having problems - I uploaded this morning with no problems and this evening my FP2000 keeps coming back and asking for my password again and again, even though I am sure I entered it correctly. Have tried 6 times now with the same result since 4 pm AZ time. I cannot seem to find a place on Rootsweb that alerts us of any problems - is there such a place? Or am I the only one having problems? Thanks again for any advice or thoughts - and feel free to visit my sites and let me know what you think about them! Thanks again, Allison M. 2. ASGS Webmaster
    3. I have a mail merge form (http://www.rootsweb.com/~asgs/form/surname.htm). People will accidentally hit the enter key instead of the tab which causes the form to be submitted. The database administrater gets inundated with incomplete e-mails! Is there a way to either disable the enter key or to change its properties that it will act like a tab key on that form/webpage? 1. [RW-Help] Uploading files
    2. Patricia Bauer
    3. Perhaps this will help Eleanor Colson with the uploading of the picture. RootsWeb won't accept files with a tilde which is the ~ mark as part of the name of the file. Sometime they are shortened because of being longer than 8 letters with a ~ taking place of part of the file name. Take a look at the file name and, if it has a tilde as part of it, just change it to something shorter and it should load with no problem. I've "been there, done that" several times. 2. Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the help. It turns out that the problem was an illegal character in the file name, not the size! Once I renamed the file, it uploaded fine. I really appreciate all the help on this list. Eleanor Colson

I just visited Gifworks last night, http://www.GIFWorks.com/index.html They offer a free online GIF optimizer -- nothing to download but the optimized file. Worth checking out, at least! While there is no maximum size for uploads, you could still run into a problem with uploads aborting when the file is large. This is due to the requirement to keep the connection open for a long time and if the route between your computer and RootsWeb is experiencing problems, the connection may timeout. Even if you could get the upload to complete, you have to ask yourself what value there is in having a large image file. Visitors would have trouble getting the image to download for display, and ... their patience may not be sufficient to wait for it. If the image becomes unusable when reduced, consider putting it up in pieces. You can see an example of how I did this at http://www.rootsweb.com/~alfayett/FayetteCoLandDeeds.html Regards, Elsi
