Mary Ann, I'm not a "professional", but I can tell you that it's definitely being circulated among the various RW Mailing Lists. I've gotten it in at least 4 times this evening alone. They were sent to me (unknowingly, I'm sure) by various subscribers to the Washington County, MO mailing list to which I subscribe. In fact, I've probably gotten this Badtrans virus in at least 25 times in the last two days plus a few others of different types from subscribers of various other mailing lists to which I subscribe. Thankfully, my Norton's is updated and always manages to catch it and quarantine it before it does any damage. B. I received e-mail from a usually-good-natured frequent visitor about the message boards at Ancestry. I thought he was crazy, so I went to prove him wrong. Ooops. He's right. On the Hampshire and Hardy county WV boards, and on the Kuykendall and Tobias surname boards, AND on the D A R's board -- click Print This Message, and then click File/print and what you saw isn't what you get. It loses two or three words on each line. In one case, that meant I picked up part of name A and part of name B and if I hadn't already KNOWN from my personal files what those two names _were_ I could have gone very far astray. Now, I've got some print-offs from last month and the one before that are *correct*. Today's batch isn't/wasn't. I *can* get the entire message using SaveAs and going through all the pain of deleting the formatting, but that, as we all know, doesn't leave me the e-dress of the poster. So, would some of you go check a board or two and see if it's doing it to you, or is it just something that happened to match in his config and mine? (I successfully printed other documents off the same computer and using the same printer both before and after this experiment, so I don't *think* it's my printer settings). Is it possible for a virus to be passed through RW Mailing Lists? Seems I remember that wasn't possible, but here it pops up again. I am referring to the new one going around,..W32-Badtrans. Seems subscribers on the Lists think so and it is a subject of conversation on a couple of them. Would like a professional opinion so I can pass it on. Mary Ann
I checked my boards and got same result the original message: I'm looking for information on my grandfather, James Ambrose HANCOCK (b. abt. 1889 in Brooklyn, NY). He married my Grandmother, Delia Dewey DEMPSEY (b.17 Jun 1898 in Granite, Oregon) 5 Aug 1917 in Baker, Oregon at the ME Parsonage. the printed out: I'm looking for information on my grandfather, James Ambrose HANCOCK (b. abt. 1889 in Brooklyn, NY). Grandmother, Delia Dewey DEMPSEY (b.17 Jun 1898 in Granite, Oregon) 5 Aug 1917 in Baker, Oregon Parsonage. a total of 6 words disappeared. That is a serious bug that needs to be reported immediately to the staff for immediate bug repair. W. Nope -- you've got that coded as the first line in your template file (template.file) -- ACTION=File: /home0013/u1/nbpast/public_html/NewComments.html Remember, my original note said that you need to modify your template file to correct errors in it, including this one. As far as I can tell, the template file has not been changed. > > Your template also needs some work: > > 1) You need a period on a line by itself before the > > OUTPUT_FORM= line and again on the last line of the > > template file. > > 2) Your target output file is located at > > /u1/nbpast/public_html/NewComments.html, not at > > /home0013/u1/nbpast/public_html/NewComments.html > > 3) You have incomplete HTML in the ADDRESS tag. Looking at your web account, I find that you've created a file named comments.tmp which have these changes applied. If you want this file to be used as the template, you have to specify its name in the FORM ACTION tag in the input form. Your input form (comments.html) still specifies the original template file: ACTION="/cgi-bin/mailmerge.cgi/~nbpast/template.file" If you want to use the new one, change your input form so that it has this: ACTION="/cgi-bin/mailmerge.cgi/~nbpast/comments.tmp" The only error I see in the new template file is in the ACTION directive. You have: ACTION=File: /u1/~nbpast/public_html/NewComments.html You need to remove the tilde so that it reads: ACTION=File: /u1/nbpast/public_html/NewComments.html I checked, and the NewComments.html file does have the proper access attributes set allowing the MailMerge script to write to it. You need to make one change and remove the ending BODY and HTML tags from the document. (<./body> and <./html>) The MailMerge script appends the form data to the bottom of the output file and this would then place that data *after* your ending tags -- not good at all. Fortunately, the insertion of the advertising banner will generate these tags for you. Regards, Elsi
Hello Elsi, Thanks for the help. I have made the corrections you suggested (I hope correctly) and have advanced, but not reached home yet. The error message I receive now is An error occurred while processing this form: /u1/httpd/cgi-bin/mailmerge.cgi: Specified log file '/home0013/u1/nbpast/public_html/NewComments.html' does not exist. It must already be created and writable. I've tried a few variations, and it is still looking for the file as listed above, even though the /home0013/ is not listed as part of my path, so am assuming the program puts that in. Cleadie B. Oops, you're right! I was looking at the documentation provided by Stanford (http://www.stanford.edu/leland/mailmerge.html), not realizing that they had added at least two features to Mailmerge (FORMCOPY and TRAILER) that weren't part of the original CGI script. There are additional data types on the new boards in addition to those offered by GenConnect. < http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.stat es.state.counties.county&c=queries > In the above example replace the word 'state' with the actual state--in this case pennsylvania (all lower case) and replace the word 'county' with the actual county--in this case york (again all lower case) so that it would appear: < http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.stat es.pennsylvania.counties.york&c=queries > To provide a data type specific link just replace the ending =queries with =deed, = will, =birth, etc. If your boards are surname boards follow the above example but use the surname board URL structure. Is the "TRAILER=no" option in Mailmerge supposed to work, in order to suppress the "Back to the form" link and the "This form generated by mailmerge" link at the bottom of the feedback page? Or is this option unavailable? Drew Smith FSGS Webmaster

I just took a look at the documentation provided by the author -- http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/mailmerge.html -- and didn't find any reference to that option.
