    3. On a few of my pages, I use the little tiny Bravenet counters, because you can get all kinds of neat information from them. Today in the Webmaster Tips & Tricks newsletter they send out, I found this: One of the things we have seen used a lot on the Web these days is the Form "focus" method. What does this do? It brings the typing cursor right to the input box that you designate. Google.com does this, and we find it very handy to begin typing immediatly. To automatically focus your forms, add the following code to your page and manipulate it to suit your needs: <body onload="document.thisform.username.focus()"> <form name="thisform"> <input name="username" type="text"> </form> I haven't gotten to using forms yet, but I thought some of you might find this useful. I sure wish this code was in place on the Tools login page for our lists! It would also be useful for the opening screens for the List Searches and Threaded Archives. Valorie

    1. [RW-Help] Contributing Database Materials to Rootsweb
    2. Gordon Young
    3. I have sent the message show below to RootsWeb ('userdb-submit@rootsweb.com') twice and have received no response. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding what I should do next. We really would like to get this material on-line at RootsWeb but have several questions about how to submit supplemental and explanatory information and in what format. Thanks in advance, Gordon Young Content of Message: I am the webmaster for the Eastside Genealogical Society of King County WA (http://www.rootsweb.com/~wakcegs). We have three data bases we are considering contributing to RootsWeb. These data bases are the indexes to Births, Deaths and Marriages extracted from two local area (Bellevue WA) newspapers' vital records for the period 1918 to 1967. For each entry in the three data bases, the data includes an abbreviation for the name of the newspaper, the microfilm roll number (assigned by the Bellevue Regional Library), the newspaper volume number, the newspaper issue number, the date the newspaper was published and the page where the entry was found. Listed below are the additional fields for each of the three data bases. Births: Child's last name Child's first name Birth city Birth state Date of birth Father's last name Father's first name Mother's last name Mother's first name Marriages: Groom's last name Groom's first name Bride's last name Bride's first name Date of marriage City of marriage State of marriage Deaths: Decedent's last name Decedent's first name Date of death City of death State of death Date of birth City of birth State of birth We can submit these data bases in .csv format, with field titles. We do have some questions. First, in looking at several pages on the web site, it looks as if the columns are somewhat customizable. Is this true? We need to include a legend to tell what newspaper the abbreviation stands for, as well as some other notations (e.g. T for twin) There are also some three-letter codes for countries that should be shown somewhere. How should this be done? In the Details screen? How should we show what to do for further queries? We would need to charge a small fee for providing copies of the notices. Is this acceptable? Would the newspaper related information be included on the details page that is shown when you click on "More Info"? There are some caveats that cover the data, such as; the event may not have occurred in Bellevue or even in Washington. How can we communicate all this information to you? It looks as though we can submit the data bases themselves through your web site, but we need to send further information regarding the data. In addition to the information shown on http://www.rootsweb.com/share.html and on http://www.rootsweb.com/submit, is there any other information we should have? Thank you, Gordon Young

Take out the TABLE, TR, and TD tags that immediately precede the paragraph that contains the clinto1.gif image. Of course, this means that you also take out the corresponding closing TD, TR, and TABLE near the end of your page (just prior to the last closing TD, TR, and TABLE). By doing that, you're removing a table that consists of nothing but a single data cell in a single row. I don't think that table is needed. Drew Smith FSGS Webmaster

(If someone can help me figure out what I have done >in the code that causes this, I would be eternally grateful!) Sherri: I'm seeing the same problem with Netscape, but not in Opera. I did find one thing wrong in your HTML -- you have the STYLE tags between the HTML and HEAD tags. You need to move them to inside the HEAD container. However, I did download your page and move them and it didn't fix the problem. I'm observing that some element is forcing the table to be extremely wide -- wide enough that most of the text is not wrapping. I looked for PRE tags which could cause that and didn't find any. I suspect that the problem is caused by some placement tag/option which NS doesn't support. I absolutely cannot find what is causing the problem. Regards, Elsi

I can't find anything on the on-line phone searchers for Bill Williams > Studio, Williams Studio, Williams Photo, etc, and I HIGHLY doubt this person is > still alive or the studio still in business! It really all depends on the nature of the work. Nowadays, photographers in studios retain the copyright of their work, but did they in 1948? Or was that a work for hire that transferred the copyright to the hirer? If he did retain the copyright, was it still protected on January 1, 1978? Assuming the photo was taken and given to your parents on July 1, 1948, a good argument can be made that that was publication under the law. So under the 1909 Copyright Act which was in effect at that time, the initial term of protection lasted 28 years. That means it ended on July 1, 1976. Possibility 1 -- The copyright had expired and it isn't covered under the 1976 law. Possibility 2 -- The owner FILED a renewal of the copyright with the Copyright Office. Automatic renewals were provided for in 1992 by Congress for works whose first term expired after the 1992 amendment. That means that automatic renewal is only relevant to works published between 1964 and 1978. So... since the photo was taken in 1948, the photographer or his family would have had to file an extension with the Copyright office in 1976 (in the 28th year) for it to still be under copyright today. Additionally, works published between 1923 and 1963 had to have notice. No notice, no copyright under the 1909 law. The 1909 law didn't expressly define publication, however, Section 26 says that in the case of a work "of which copies are reporduced for sale or distribution," "the 'date of publication' shall . . . be held to be the earliest date when copies of the first authorized edition were placed on sale, sold or publicly distributed by the proprietor of the copyright or under his authority." (from Copyright: Cases and Materials, 5th Edition, by Robert A. Gorman and Jance C. Ginsburg, Lexis Law Publishing, 1999) Duration Periods Created in 1978 or later -- protection attaches upon being fixed in a tangible medium for life plus 70 years or 120 years from creation whichever is first Published 1964-1977 -- protection attaches upon publication with notice for 28 years. Renewal term is 67 years and commences automatically. Published between 1923 and 1963, inclusive -- protection attaches upon publication with notice for 28 years. Renewal term is 67 years if renewal was sought, otherwise these works are in the public domain (even if works first terms expired after 1977 renewal registration is still necessary) Published before 1923 -- Public domain Created but not published before 1978 -- protection attaches on 1/1/1978 for life plus 70 with the earliest expiration dates being 12/31/2002 if the work remains unpublished or 12/31/2047 if it's published by the end of 2002. 3. Hi Mike - Thanks for your response. I asked because I have my parent's 1948 wedding pictures that I want to copy on those nifty machines at WalMart! They of course have notices about photographs being copyrighted and don't copy those studio pictures! These wedding pictures are in a folder with "Bill Williams Studio" (Dallas, TX) and each picture is taped in place (under a mat) with a sticker with Bill Williams Studio name. I can't find anything on the on-line phone searchers for Bill Williams Studio, Williams Studio, Williams Photo, etc, and I HIGHLY doubt this person is still alive or the studio still in business! 3. Hi, I've had a copyright site for quite some time and have been researching copyright for a new site. The current site is located at www.cswnet.com/~sbooks/genealogy/copyright/copyright.htm . Yes, photographs fall under the same laws as printed works. One important key for both is whether they have been PUBLISHED or not. Printing photographs for private family use would NOT constitute PUBLISHING. Distributing photographs in something like a genealogical society newsletter would be considered to be PUBLISHING. Just as in "printed works," the only absolute positive is that works, including photographic works, PUBLISHED before 1923 are in the public domain. UNPUBLISHED photographs, no matter how old they are protected until at least the end of next year. Photographic works or photos in other works that were PUBLISHED before 1978 without proper notice of copyright automatically entered the public domain. Those published between January 1, 1978 and March 1, 1989 without proper notice entered the public domain unless action was taken to correct the lack of notice. Use of old photographs in a family genealogy work would likely constitute fair use. Mike Goad Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer and what I have written here is based on my own understanding through my study of copyright law. It does not constitute legal advice. Hi, I've talked to some techs/officers at one of the large computer companies and they said to forward the messages to your server who will in turn, do something about it, if they get enough of them. For instance, mine is earthlink.net (they have a link called spaminator which deals with this) and it is coming from lycos, to them. They can do something if it gets too bad, in fact, I've already heard from mine, and today, I had no more spam. (it actually was from China, not korea but, the address had .kr on it so, I thought it was Korea.?? I had one yesterday that was porn and that was the final straw. It is computerized spamming, just like computerized telemarketing and don't we all love that!! Hope this helps. So far there seems to be a little Spam going on, but my virus programs have detected no viruses from any of the hundreds of message I have received from those ISP's. I recommend that the messages just be clicked off and avoid opening attachments to those messages. If you are REALLY curious, cut and paste the body of the message into a Korean to English translator like Babble. You will get a word for word translation, not too informative, but interesting.
