    3. The problem is that these email reapers are not obliged to -- and probably don't -- respect "no bot" directives. -R. Cleadie Barnett wrote in part: > 8>< > > This method could have just that page as as "no bot", and the rest of > the site would be free to be searched.

    3. A link (or anchor) has two parts: 1. The markup: <A href="mailto:...">___</A> 2. The content: which is coded where you see the underscores above. This is what gets displayed by a browser. I'm recommending that you encode parts of the actual URL in the href= part, and NOT include your address in the content part. I think that it's just too easy for the spiders to find it there. -R. If you want to go the ASCII-encode route, this page is a big help: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cyrs/CharacterTest.htm I encode the 'mailto:' part, too, because that may be what the spam-bots are searching for. 3. Well, it has /always/ been possible. It's just that it's now being done to the point of becoming a big problem. Did you get one of those solicitations: "WARNING: A SPAM Robot harvested your email address!"? So did I. Several! Some possibilities: 1. The tool advertised in that spam/solicitation would do the job -- but requires JavaScript. Your non-JS users would not see the underlying address, nor would the "link" be active. 2. Convert your address to an image, and post that -- but don't make it an active link! 3. Change some of the characters in your address to encoded form, e.g. change the "@" to "%40", and any periods (".") to "%2E" -- and don't use the address as the link content (displayed form). This will work until the spiders get smarter. Chances are that it will foil the majority for quite a while -- assuming that it's not worthwhile to educate the spiders for the sake of another few addresses. -R. singhals wrote: > It is now apparently possible to harvest e-dresses off our webpages. > > I assume they're well-behaved little 'bots, so I could just slap a > "no-bots" in the META tags, but then the pages don't get indexed either. > > Is there some way to keep it easy for my GenWeb visitors to reach me > (without my having to set up and visit yet another e-mail acct) while > keeping the harvesters at bay? > > Cheryl > *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_* > Cheryl Singhal (Singhals@erols.com) > > http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpafug/ > http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvhampsh/ > http://www.capaccess.org/com/troop763/ > http://www.fortunecity.com/millennium/blyton/772/ (Bottony Cross DAR) > http://www.rootsweb.com/~cresap/ > http://members.fortunecity.com/csinghal1/ (Joanna Waddill UDC) > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 -- Regards, Rod Dav4is / P.O. 3. It is now apparently possible to harvest e-dresses off our webpages. I assume they're well-behaved little 'bots, so I could just slap a "no-bots" in the META tags, but then the pages don't get indexed either. Is there some way to keep it easy for my GenWeb visitors to reach me (without my having to set up and visit yet another e-mail acct) while keeping the harvesters at bay? 3. Suggestion - make your e-mail address in plain text , they will have to cut and paste when readers want you , but it will stop the harvesting . I am going to make a alternative address my self, so its not directed to my main address. 2. Steve Alvarez
    3. I have an excel document which I am thinking about turning into a webpage and uploading onto my site. But when I went for a quick converse using the <pre></pre> command it did not maintain the formatting of the 6 columns. Do I need to code the page to recognize the columns. Or is there another way my little HTML book does not tell me about. Steve
