Am I the only one who has noticed that the reported spam was delivered by the /REQUEST/ server and not the mail list server? As administrators of mailing lists and the like, you are suppose to report and spam that has fallen through the cracks. Forward (not copy and paste) the mail to: abuse@rootsweb.com To read about "What to do if Spam Reaches Your Mailing List" go to: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/spamreport.html Michelle

Once you register with them, they have a forwarding service. For instance if you get spam that originates from imaspammer@aol.com all you do is forward it (with headers) to aol.com@abuse.net and they will forward it on to the correct abuse address. You don't have to know if you should send it to abuse@aol.com or some other email address. As an example, the abuse address for vdi.net is noc@vdi.net instead of abuse@vdi.net. I would never have known that on my own. Another tool I use is a program called Sam Spade (http://www.samspade.com) -- It helps in determining where the email/spam originated from. I love them, too. And, no, I'm not affiliated with either product or service. Lesley Lesley In memory: Casey Michael Sep. 1, 1975 - Aug. 1, 1988
There has been some discussion about Spam on this list. Below is a note I sent to Virus-L list on the spam problem many there are having. I thought I would list it here in case anyone is interested. ----------------- Due to the thread about spam, I decided to go out to a friend and ask about spam. This list is not complete, but is from the first link, which is a FAQ about a nude list on news groups. The group happens to be one that my friend has had to rescue a client or two, when their kids decided to look at the pix. Some viruses were hidden in some of the pix and other files. Ignore the news group, but read the note about Spam. I redid the links list including only those with present sites that come up when you click on the link. I do not place any faith on any of these links yet, as I have not checked them out. Some seem pretty good on first glance. It will take a bit of time to look at all. Take any statement on any site with a grain of salt, as many times there is a hidden agenda. Now to the list: http://newmachine.qwikpages.com/thehangout/abncf/spam.htm http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/story/story_1170.html http://www.turnstep.com/Spambot/ http://www.stopspam.org/ http://legal.web.aol.com/ http://petemoss.com/spam/ http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/nospam.html http://www.msg.net/nospam/ http://www.cauce.org/ http://www.thisistrue.com/spam.html http://spam.abuse.net/ http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/story/story_1110.html http://www.mall-net.com/spamfaq.html http://www.arachnoid.com/lutusp/antispam.html http://www.elsop.com/wrc/complain.htm http://www.cybernothing.org/faqs/net-abuse-faq.html http://ddi.digital.net/~gandalf/spamfaq.html I have visited all, and believe they are safe to look at. It must have slipped through the cracks. RW has always been good about catching those and notififying me that they have stopped them and letting me know in case the spam is something I wanted....Yeah, right! I think it was just a slip up. Yes, I got it.... some with different email addresses to my four mail lists. I just blocked the sender and haven't received more. I got another one that had no subject line and no message. In a message dated 1/1/02 10:52:23 AM Eastern Standard Time, KINGSLEY@aol.com writes: > How do I gateway my message boards.? > > What is the key to getting to a utilities page for a county? Brenda- Setting up the gateway for your boards depends on whether you are also the list admin or whether someone else is. If you are not the list admin the request to gateway has to come from the list admin for you have the gateway turned on. Assuming you are also the list admin or have the list admin's agreement to gateway this is how you do it: Add the gateway address: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com to your list's Accept List on your Tools page (or let the list admin know to do this). Make sure to add this address to your Accept List -- do NOT subscribe the address to your list (it will bounce). You can find your Accept List by going to your Tools page, logging in, clicking on Edit Files, and then on Accept List. Type in the address and click on the button to submit the information. This takes care of allowing gatewayed posts to be automatically copied to your list. However, you still need to have the gateway turned on on the board side for the messages posted to the board to be sent to your list. Write to whichever of the following addresses apply in this case (depending upon the type of board): boards-surnames@rootsweb.com boards-localities@rootsweb.com boards-topics@rootsweb.com Staff will then turn on the gateway on the board side. One final note for the list admin: if you do not wish to have the board messages automatically posted to your list but would like to have them gatewayed to you as admin for your review--and then forward on to the list those which you feel would be beneficial--you don't need to add the gc-gateway address to your list's Accept List (but the gateway still needs to be turned on on the board side). If you choose this method, list subscribers may still post to the boards and their messages will still make it automatically to the list without review. Non list members' messages would bounce to you as admin for review. Should you wish to review ALL board posts (including those posted by your list members, you can add the gateway address to your list' Reject List (which you access just like the Accept List). Now, as to your second question, I assume you are asking about getting to your admin boards to manage them? If so, you need to start here: http://boards.rootsweb.com and click on the link that says Admin Center. Login using the account under which you are registered as admin for your boards and the main Admin Center page will present you with a list of links to all the admin boards for the boards you admin. Hi, I was out of touch when the majority of the change over for message boards was going on. I am sure there is a faqs on rootsweb but I have the worse time finding things on that webpage.. so am asking here. How do I gateway my message boards.? What is the key to getting to a utilities page for a county? Thanks for all help Brenda
I'm still mystified as to how my file got lost in the upload, but thanks to a suggestion from the Rootsweb help desk I was able to retrieve a month-old copy from the cache on google and revise it to suit. The method was to go to http://www.google.com and enter the url of my web page in the search field. You might want to try this yourself just to see what google has in their database for your page. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | The Ahern Family Genealogy Website Acton, Massachusetts | http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This is most bizarre. Yesterday I uploaded a revised copy of my index.html file from my hard drive using ftp in a Netscape browser as I do with most of my files. Today I checked my Ahern website and the file seems to have been truncated during the upload. I have seen this happen before when something breaks the link while the file is being loaded. Normally I would just upload the file again. But here's the rub -- the file is gone from my hard drive! I'm dumbfounded! How could this be? More importantly, what can I do about it? Is there someplace I can contact on rootsweb to get a file restored to what it was before yesterday? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dennis Ahern | The Ahern Family Genealogy Website Acton, Massachusetts | http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aherns/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Staff is aware and I presume are working on it. But it *did* fail on a holiday weekend. Consider the possible problem of obtaining replacement parts. I really don't know what is happening or what progress they have made in restoring the server. I do know that after the hardware is repaired, the data has to be reloaded from backups and after that is done, it has to be indexed so it can be searched. This process may take 24-48 hours end-to-end, given the huge number of GEDCOM files/databases held on that server. Regards, Elsi
