Back in October, I started working on a frame-page for Christmas. I never got it to work and ran out of time. Today, I had some spare time and worked on it again. It STILL doesn't work. So, I visited Barebones, htmlgoodies and another site whose name eludes me, and so far as I can see the code SHOULD work. If someone has some time, I'd sure appreciate an off-list consultation! If your site is on the FreePages server, then the only counter available from RootsWeb is the Gumby counter from http://counter.rootsweb.com/ So far, RootsWeb has not objected to counters from off-site servers. If the once supplied by RootsWeb doesn't fit your needs, you might consider one of those. Regards, Elsi

Michael- There is a different sort of counter available on rootsweb that might serve your needs: * http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/wizards/webmasters.html#counter * records each "hit" on a page-by-page basis * available only in text form * displays only ordinal numbers (e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) I've combined both counters on my site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylnphs/V0/index.htm If I could find a "cardinal" version (that returns just the number, 1, 2, 3, etc.) I could play with the font to get the effect I really want. Does anyone know of a different version of this counter? -R. The counter just ignores 'consecutive' visits from the same IP. Yes, with cable modem or DSL, you get a longer lease on an IP address than if you were dialing and undialing. And some of us even have static IPs. The counter was deliberately designed to ignore consecutive visits from the same IP so that if George is looking at your page, he doesn't run up your counter (making it 'way off') by hitting his refresh/reload button over and over. But if there's real traffic to your site -- Sally and Dave and Jim -- then the counter will go up appropriately to indicate the true number of visitors. >Anyone know if/what there's a time "limit" on the cache. The 'cache' and 'expires' options do not affect the count incrementing, just whether or not a particular visitor's browser caches the image on his PC. I don't believe that this option applies to the version of the counter installed at RootsWeb -- we'd have to ask Randy about that. I think there's a much earlier version of the counter installed at RootsWeb since I've heard nothing about an upgrade since it was first installed over 2 years ago. These parameters were added to the counter script to counter-act the problem where the true counter value is actually higher than is displaying in the browser because the browser has cached a previous value. I think what you are wanting is the option to specify 'reload=T' -- but that requires a configuration option that I'm sure isn't set and may not have even been available when the counter was installed at RootsWeb. >(unless I turn off my cable modem + wait over 24 hrs to turn on... >...will I get a different IP) Maybe -- depends on the DHCP server on your network. The point here is that as it is installed, the counter provides a very good idea of the number of distinct visitors who have viewed your pages. It is not a statistical hit counter. So, if you only have one visitor who hits your home page, follows a link further into your site, then returns to the home page. He still counts as only one visit. Web server logs would show that the page was retrieved 2 times -- but would also show the IP or hostname of the visitor so you'd be aware that it was seen twice by the same person. Regards, Elsi
I have Netscape 4.7 and IE 6.0. It overlaps in IE, but not in Netscape. They read some codes differently.... which I know nothing. I usually compose in Netscape Composer, but check how they look in both browsers before uploading.... I just play with it until I get it to look right in both. One of these days I will learn html. OK...then that would be it... Even after reboot, the way I have my home network...get same IP all the time ...get 1 IP from my ISP, then have router with multi-PCs using Checked pages with counters...they've been incrementing (from others hitting) But according to the &expires=0 parm ...should have done it. The RootsWeb counter is deliberately designed to *not* increment on sequential repeat visits from the same browser (actually IP address). If you're sitting there hitting the refresh button, the counter isn't going to increment. Someone else has to visit the site first -- then you'll get counted again. Regards, Elsi

It also occurs to me that files copied from certain backup media, such as CD-ROMs will be copied in read-only mode, which would cause those messages. Take a look at some of them: right-click on one and select "properties". The "read-only" attribute will be a check-box near the bottom of the properties dialog. If checked, this would prevent an application (e.g. Eudora) from writing to the file, replacing it, etc. -- Regards, Rod Dav4is / P.O. Heather do you run Norton Antivrus Program? One of the bugs between these two programs is it will put it's address in "Checking Mail" under options. It puts something like Pop3 Norton antivirus in place of your mail.servername.net and your login will have /norton ..... You might check this. Can you open these files in Windows Explorer? Hello! Back in September I had a email crash and Susan Taylor came to my rescue:) Well, I have had another crash ... with the help of a family member:( Anyway, I have copied over all files ending with .toc., .mbx, .txt etc however I am still getting error messages such as: "Could not open file c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Trash.toc for writing Cause: Access permission denied. File may be marked as Read Only or Locked (13). " I have the same message for the "out box" and am unable to send mail from that program. "Could not open file c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Out.toc for writing Cause: Access permission denied. File may be marked as Read Only or Locked (13). " Can someone tell me how to fix this?? Any help greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Heather Waddingham Campobello Parish Coordinator hwaddingham@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? A researcher has sent me an image and a transcription of the text on two pages from an 1886 book, "The Parish of Strathblane and Its Inhabitants from Early Times: a Chapter of Lennox History" by John Guthrie Smith, F.S.A. Scot., James Maclehose and Sons, Publishers to the University, 1886. If it were published in the US, I would feel these two pages were OK to post on my web pages because it was published before 1923, and the researcher has given me permission to use his transcription. Does anyone have any information about the copyright on books published in Scotland? Mary Ann Dobson http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dobson
Is the server up, or am I just having problems. I was useing AceFTP to upload to Rootsweb's server, my trial period ended, and I was unable to upload. Now I have a working program, and I can't seem to upload still. Can anyone help?
Addendum... With putting the variables and function into a separate file with an extension that the bots most likely won't go after, you could probably get by with one variable per address... ====So myaddr0.txt would contain the following: <!-- var1 = "mailto:mail-id@domain.name?subject=Website Comments" var2 = "mailto:my-id@email.domain?subject=Having a wonderful time" function sendmail(addr) {location = addr} // --> ====end of myaddr0.txt And make appropriate variable changes to the function call in the webpage. *
Reference my original post...Re: [RW-Help] Bot address-harvesting? Most of us have our mailto e-mail address coded into multiple pages. After showing my code to some of the Java programmers at work they gave me the following so only have one place to maintain my addresses... Cut out the lines from "<!--" thru "// -->" and put/save into a separate text format file. ie. myaddr0.txt The file name and extension can be whatever want. Just don't use .HTM/.HTML...what the bots are looking for ====So myaddr0.txt would contain the following: <!-- var0a = "mailto:" var1b = "mail-id@" var1c = "domain.name" var1d = "?subject=Website Comments" var2b = "my-id@" var2c = "email.domain" var2d = "?subject=Having a wonderful time" function sendmail(addr) {location = addr} // --> ====end of myaddr0.txt Then change the remaining... <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"> </SCRIPT> To... <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC=myaddr0.txt> </SCRIPT> So now the parms and script function is in a common file with one place to change. ===== A variation would be a separate file for each address needed... ==== myaddr1.txt would contain the following: <!-- var1a = "mailto:" var1b = "mail-id@" var1c = "domain.name" var1d = "?subject=Website Comments" function sendmail(addr) {location = addr} // --> ====end of myaddr1.txt ==== myaddr2.txt would contain the following: <!-- var2a = "mailto:" var2b = "my-id@" var2c = "email.domain" var2d = "?subject=Having a wonderful time" function sendmail(addr) {location = addr} // --> ====end of myaddr2.txt Then whichever webpage need the address in, code the appropriate filename in the SRC= parm. If you needed both addresses within the same webpage, code like the following to pull in both files... <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC=myaddr1.txt> </SCRIPT> <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC=myaddr2.txt> </SCRIPT> Just need to insure your variable names are different in the files. You may also want to change the Function name "sendmail" to "sendmail1" and "sendmail2" in the files. And then change the function name called in your page. With the same function name included multi times, my tests caused the "sendmail" to be involked for each occurance of the function. *
I noticed and that is why I just block the sender. I knew Rootweb had managed to block all that went to the list before and wasn't sure they scan the request addy for spam.
