Press "OK" and you will have a blue highlighted hyperlink in your e-mail. That's the only way I've found to put do this in AOL. Bob

To make a URL a link in AOL's email program you have to add HTML coding <a href="http://www.ancestry.com/main.htm">http://www.ancestry.com/main.htm</a> > > Also, she's having trouble copying a URL off AOL into a document -- she > gets the TITLE of the page, not the URL. > > Anyone know what she needs to do to fix it? I'm not quite sure what you mean about not being able to copy a URL into a document. What type of document? If you mean copying a URL into an email she just has to click on the little "heart icon" and select copying the link into an email. It will show up as a link for other AOL users but will show up as coding to everyone else. However, they will still see the URL. If she wants to copy ONLY the URL she can highlight the URL in the browser window and use the keyboard command of Control-c to copy the URL and then paste it into the document with the command Control-v for paste. Joan
I have been asked by someone who uses AOL why when she types http://www.ancestry.com/main.htm it never shows up as a _link_ in e-mail. It shows up the same way as www.ancestry.com/main.htm would show. Also, she's having trouble copying a URL off AOL into a document -- she gets the TITLE of the page, not the URL. Anyone know what she needs to do to fix it? Thanks! It might help if we had the address to look at it for ourselves. Also, more detail regarding the specific problems using FrontPage and the other tools would be helpful. Personally, I use FTPx (FTP Explorer) for all my upload/download work. It has the huge advantage of providing an explorer-like interface -- i.e. with a split window, folders/structure on the left, files on the right -- and drag-and-drop. Uploading files is as simple as copying them to another folder on your PC: Lasso them and drag to the new spot! http://www.ftpx.com/ You understand, of course, that you should build your structure of folders and subfolders rooted in the public_html folder? Also, it's best to have the identical structure on your PC within which you do your development and testing. -R. I have developed my web in Front Page 98, but am unable to load it on my RootsWeb "homepages.rootweb.com" site. I appear to be blocked by the requirement to insert the pages in the "public_html" folder. Ummm, I have a volunteer typist to put some stuff on-line for the Hampshire co WV GenWeb, and I suggested we work on the WWI draft cards. We're still working out how we'll pull this off, with her half-way across the country from me, but she found this aol. site and asked if he were already working on the Hampshire co draft cards, because there was no reason to duplicate things.. http://members.aol.com/Rayhbanks/cos.html This URL takes you to a list of the first half of the alphabet states, with a list of counties and links. Each link I checked either on that URL or the next one which would include WV and VA if he'd gotten that far -- was ftp://rootsweb Note that RW gets no credit, nor does the admin for the various sites, nor does the contributor. (Of course, had I actually d/l the file and opened it, this might be covered, but since I didn't particularly want the draft cards from any of the places listed, I didn't take the time to check that.) So, it looks like his site is merely a quick index to files on RW. I'm not sure about this whole concept. (g) It just feels "wrong" to me. Particularly since the page makes it sound like *he* is doing all this. Anyone know what's going on here? Ray Banks has been submitting extracts from those draft registration cards since at least 1997 and places them in the USGenWeb Project Archives. The ftp links merely take you to view the files in the Archives through your browser. If you want to save the file from there, you have to do it in your browser just like you would with any html file. I would imagine that it's just an oversight that he didn't mention the Archives for the links. Hi, Joan- It means that when the messages from the list were sent to you the messages bounced back to RootsWeb instead or being delivered to you. When this happens a predetermined number of times within a specific period of time the mailing list software unsubscribes the address that is bouncing. The bounces would have been sent to the list's administrator and if you contact the list admin he or she might be able to tell you the reason given on the bounces. That would explain why your mail was bouncing so that you would have a better idea of what is going on and a better idea what to tell your ISP when you contact them. To contact the list admin write to: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com substituting the actual list name for the word LISTNAME above. The e-mail I received really doesn't > explain why it happened, just how. The 'how' part is Greek to me. You would have to show us what this message says in order for us to explain it. What does > it mean by ' ask your system administrator (which system?) or send mail to > "postmaster" (what is the address?). This means that you need to contact Tech Support at your ISP or write to the postmaster. Every ISP must have a "postmaster" address. So if you were unsubbed at the address you are using here "mac.com" then you would write to postmaster@mac.com. If you are sending the message FROM your mac.com address you most likely need only to address the message to "postmaster." That's why I'm sending this to your > list. Also, down in all the Greek, I see references to "May be forged"?? > What does that mean? Without seeing it we couldn't comment, but "may be forged" in email headers means nothing in most cases. > > I attempted to contact Earthlink, but I'll have to wait til they call me > someday and I need to correct this problem now. If you could get the list admin to send you a copy of one of the bounces that resulted in your being unsubbed from the list you could send it to your ISP Tech Support so that they could help you. If your email is now working you could also try to resubscribe to the list--perhaps the problem was temporary. Joan
I was unsubscribed from a list I am on due to my mail bouncing. Can you explain exactly what this means? The e-mail I received really doesn't explain why it happened, just how. The 'how' part is Greek to me. What does it mean by ' ask your system administrator (which system?) or send mail to "postmaster" (what is the address?). That's why I'm sending this to your list. Also, down in all the Greek, I see references to "May be forged"?? What does that mean? I attempted to contact Earthlink, but I'll have to wait til they call me someday and I need to correct this problem now. Joan in CA
I got a new computer and have transferred all of my files onto it via a home network. When I open my WS_FTP now, the only thing displaying on the local directory is C:\WS_FTP and the files that go with it. If I click on the downward arrow to the right of the box, I find the directory that I need, C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\WebClass, but highlighting it does not display the files that are in it. All of my directories are still on the remote site. What do I do to get that missing directory to show up where it belongs, so that I can add to it? Sherrill

The way I understand your question is that you're uploading files and they are going into www.rootsweb.com/~accountname so that when people go to your site they can't see it. If this is the case, try moving your files into the www.rootsweb.com/~accountname/publichtml directory Lesley In memory: Teska Jayne Feb. 1, 1988 - Jan. 23, 1999
If your account name is www.rootsweb.com/~sim/, for example, you name your home page index.htm or index.html and make sure there isn't already a file with that name. You send people to the address and the index page is pulled. You may also name it default.htm. Some servers are set up differently; this applies to Rootsweb and most servers. Hope this answers your question and helps! OK, I'm chagrined! I can't remember how to change a setting in Netscape Communicator. Currently I have it set to not open a message until I double click on it, and I want them to go ahead and open. HI! I recently had to "reload" my Front Page Express program to my computer. When I reloaded the files alot of them have come up "read only" which I am able to "fix" when I am working on or updating pages that I have already loaded to my site. I also want to make "new" pages. But I have not been able to figure out "where" I can find the "new" file function in the Front Page Express file folder and remove the "read only" function so I can make and load "new pages". I hope this makes sense I know I have probably not explained it very well:) Thanks! Heather Waddingham Campobello Parish Coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~nbcampob/

The web was created using Front Page.I have disable the FP extensions. Will my links still work okay? Thanks in advance Margaret
