    3. Hi Joan, I too use rogers.com, but I forward from canada.com and I have been getting my lists without any trouble. I say that advisedly, because it took me ages to finally get everything configured so that I had it working at all. We have a router at home and run 4 computers off it, so that added complications. Plus I'm a Eudora fan, and rogers won't provide support for Eudora. I finally got it working so that I could receive messages, but still couldn't send them. Fortunately, by the 31st deadline I had that working too. Now I have a similar problem getting my work email working properly from home--I can receive it, still have to send it out under the canada.com address which complicates matters again. But I'm determined that sooner or later I'll get it all working OK!! Joan- As a Rogers subscriber you need to contact them and tell them you are paying them to deliver email you WANT to receive to you, and that you WANT to receive the RootsWeb mail and that you expect them to get this matter resolved! It won't do much good for RootsWeb to contact Rogers since Rogers views them as a spammer--would YOU listen to a spammer? But you are a *paying* subscriber and they should listen to YOU. Good luck! My husband wrote me such a program in the 1970s; it ran off punch-cards on an IBM mainframe in FORTRAN -- or was it ASSEMBLER... By the mid-1980s, though, PAF was out, and one of the goodies in there was a Soundex coder. Import a very large number of names via GEDCOM (from Ancestral File, or WorldConnect or wherever) into an empty PAF database, and then run the SOUNDEX coder. PAF 2.x provides you a list of names in the database with the same code. I haven't looked for this feature in PAF 4 or 5; nor do I remember whether FTM or UFT or TMG offers it (probably do, all of 'em), but it's worth a look. 3. I have a question about using Soundex for your surnames. I understand how to convert a surname to Soundex (I think). I'm wondering if there is a simple way (other than trial & error!) to convert a Soundex to the most common surnames it represents. Let me give you an example. I had searched high & low for a Madison Sprague who lived in Lagrange Co., IN. When the usual census searches failed, I tried just looking for men in the area whose first name was Madison. Maybe, I thought, the census taker spelled his surname incorrectly. I found Madison Spear in southern Michigan. The birthplaces and times fit for him & his children. He & his siblings apparently used Sprague & Spear. I've been seeking my ancestor Anson Clark for 20 years. I've tried the common variations on Clark without success. After the Madison Sprague experience, I started wondering what other surnames C462 represented. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Kathleen

With the endless possibilities of names trying to a reverse Soundex would be a major undertaking. With a listing of X number of surnames it would be possible but with many unusual surnames, changing of the spelling of names where some may only appear once or twice, I do not expect this could be accomplished without many errors. 3. Now there's more than one way to skin a cat: Go to http://resources.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/soundexconverter and enter any name with the soundex you want to reverse. It will give you the soundex code (which you already know), but ALSO it will give you a list of other names with the same code. And there you have it. 3. I received a strange virus and it said it contained information from the Huron County Genealogical Society (or something close to that but for genealogy information.) I forwarded a copy to the feds, uce@ftc.gov , they sent back a reply within seconds notifying me that it was a virus, what type of virus it was and a site where I can obtain information about the virus plus how to fix it if it is in my computer. I have received the same virus within weeks of each other, one had a .com the other .exe but both had another .doc. It just does not end! Michelle www.rootsweb.com/~ohclecem

RootsWeb does not offer FrontPage extensions. Rather, they provide alternatives for the most commonly used extension features: counter, last-modified date, inclusion of other files in the page. Since there are no FrontPage extensions on the server, you must set your 'publish' options to use an ftp:// URL instead of an http:// URL. This is simple to do and there are any number of FrontPage users who have successfully published their sites to RootsWeb. Over on our FreePages mailing list, there are several folks who help other FrontPage users. Ken Rury has also put together a page with hints & tips for FrontPage users. ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~krury/wfrontpage.htm ) His examples are for the FreePages server, but it's simple to modify to fit the parameters for the WWW server if that's where your web account is.
