I feel we, the user community, should protest to Ancestry.com about this increased commercialization of the Social Security Death Index pages. In addition to the pop-under nuisance, for which several of you have suggested remedies, I notice they now add a link to each search result entry for "Search Ancestry.com". Yes, the more clever among us may devise methods to bypass pop-under ads, but most people will just get annoyed and frustrated, which reflects badly on rootsweb, which is nominally the provider of this database. I say this is giving us a black eye in the genealogy community. There are other pages that offer the SS Death Index, but I have staked my efforts on the rootsweb version because I can add post-it notes with links to obituaries on my Ahern website. With the increased clutter this becomes less valuable and discourages me from making the effort. I say the remedy is not to tweak our browsers to bypass these intrusions, but to send Ancestry.com a clear message that it is an unwelcome burden to add to rootsweb's users. Cheryl's thoughs are excellent and practiced by most county coordinators I know. Since this web site is for the historical society, you might consider using rotating tag lines for the replies that give brief bits of information about the society. Like "The society meets every third Wednesday of the month at the conference room of the sub court house in _____." or "A subscription to our quarterly newsletter is a great gift. Click on (add URL) to learn more." I'm sure you can think of more. I recommend you never solicit a fee or hint about money when you answer a query. However, sometimes a query will be so broad in scope that it would require more than a simple lookup. When II get such an query, I respond that an answer would require research, which I do not do for others, but give them the name and email address of someone who does research for hire, and drop it at that. If your society has one or more volunteers who would be willing to perform such ressearch, post the information on the web pages, and give explicit information about the cost, time to reply, form of reply, etc. And make it clear that a simple lookup for a name in one of the publications owned by a lookup volunteer is free. Finally, if you do not have anyone willing to do research for hire, establish a county mailing list, and invite researchers to post their requests for general information to that mailing list, which some member of the society can administer. I'm off my soapbox. Next, please. We have recently created a rootsweb site for our historical society and would like some suggestions for the easiest and most effective way of handling queries from our viewers. Any suggestions from some of the experts would be appreciated. Jack Nida Roane Co. WV Historical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvrchs/ Website Administrator
Trying to set up the new website, (actually still testing) and I have had some success with one form - emailing the results to myself, although I don't care for the feedback form that appears after the user clicks on submit - I'd like to be able to control it more. My concern at the moment is mailmerge writing to a file. I have saved the file and used chmod to make it writable by all. I tried putting BathurstGen.htm into a new subdirectory and set the directory as "read by all" but still got the same error. But I get this message: ============================= An error occurred while processing this form: /home/usr/local/apache/cgi-bin/local/mailmerge.cgi: Specified log file 'http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswbfhg/BathurstGen.htm' does not exist. It must already be created and writable. ========================= The file has been created and is writable and I can access it by entering http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswbfhg/BathurstGen.htm into the browser address bar. Here is the template file ===================== # template: query.tmp ACTION=File: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswbfhg/BathurstGen.htm # Set up defaults TITLE=Thank You For Posting Your Query AUTHOR=Liz Haddon for BFHG ADDRESS=<A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswbfhg">RETURN to BFHG Main Page</a> ESCAPE_HTML=1 . # The output form, ie. the html fragment that will be appended to the BathurstGen.htm file OUTPUT_FORM= <p> <strong>Name: @NAME@<br></strong> <strong>Email: <a href="mailto:@email@">@email@</a></strong><br> <p> @Query@ <p> . ===================================
I am just learning to do the web pages. Using Front page Express. I open the page on the web, add the information, save. window comes up looking like it is saving. When I check it on net, information is not there. what Am I doing wrong. I have done additions to email queries that same way and they loaded. Brenda

You can't write to a file using an http:// location. You can only write to a file on the same server as the script and since the script is a program rather than a browser, you must give the path to the file: ACTION= File:/~nswbfhg/BathurstGen.htm ACTION= File:/home0001/world/gensoc/aus/nswbfhg/public_html/BathurstGen.htm The first format tells the script to use the account home directory and the second format tells the script the exact path location of the file. Either one is valid on the WWW server. Using the first format is much simpler. ># Set up defaults >TITLE=Thank You For Posting Your Query >AUTHOR=Liz Haddon for BFHG >ADDRESS=<A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswbfhg">RETURN to BFHG >Main Page</a> >ESCAPE_HTML=1 >. ># The output form, ie. the html fragment that will be appended to the BathurstGen.htm file > >OUTPUT_FORM= ><p> ><strong>Name: @NAME@<br></strong> ><strong>Email: <a href="mailto:@email@">@email@</a></strong><br> ><p> >@Query@ ><p> >. >=================================== > > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > > >
Sorry for passing this on to non-Minnesota lists but we are all pretty much doing research in other states also. In case anyone is interested and researching in Minnesota... The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2002 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - Minnesota Death Certificates Index Online Death certificates can provide valuable genealogy information for researchers. Most death certificates will provide a place and date of birth for the deceased individual, information that may be elusive otherwise. Some death certificates will even provide the names of the parents. Frequently, the death certificate may be the only easily identified link back to a person's birth and his or her ancestors. The Minnesota Historical Society now has an online index of death certificates in the state. The database currently indexes the years from 1908 through 1955. The Minnesota state government became custodian of death records starting in 1908, and these are the records indexed by the Minnesota Historical Society. Earlier records were kept by the county government and are not included in the new online database. I took a look at the Minnesota Death Certificates Index database and found it very easy to use. From the search page you have options for entering first/last name (exact, contains, starts with, or ends with), date of death (expressed as a range of years), county to search (or you can search all counties) and how you want to arrange the results displayed (by last name, first name, death year, and death county.) After specifying a search, within a second or two a new page appears, listing those items that match your search criteria. Search results have a place for name, certificate ID, date of birth, place of birth, mother's maiden name, date of death, and county of death. However, not all the fields will be filled in. For instance, in all the searches I conducted the date of birth, place of birth, and mother's maiden name were blank in this index. Keep in mind that this is strictly an index. The information in this database does not include all the information contained on the original death certificates. Information about date and place of birth or parents' names may be missing in this online index but usually can be found on the original certificates. If you find an ancestor listed in this database, you will always want to obtain a photocopy of the original death certificate. The Minnesota Historical Society's Web pages make it easy to order the certificate(s) by mail. When viewing the index listing for an individual, you can click on "Add to Order." You may continue to search in the database and even add more items to the order form. When you are finished with your searches, you click on "View Order." The order form will be automatically generated by the Society's Web page and displayed on your screen. However, you must send the order form and payment information by old-fashioned "snail mail." You simply print the order form on your local printer, and write a check ($8.00 per certificate requested) or enter your credit card information on the order form. You then send the order to the Minnesota Historical Society. The Society will send photocopies of the certificates to you, normally within three weeks of your order date. The Minnesota Death Certificates database is an excellent tool for anyone researching Minnesota ancestors between 1908 and 1955. You can access the database yourself at: http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm

It dawned on me that my first response didn't explain how this part of John's message gave me the clue to what is happening. The FTP (file transfer protocol) uses two network connections -- a control connection on which commands are sent and a data connection on which the file transfer takes place. The control connection is established from the client to the server; in other words, from your computer to the RootsWeb server. The data connection is established from the server to the client. It's kind of like if you have two telephone lines and you call your best friend, who also has two lines and ask her to call you back on your second line without disconnecting the first call. It's that callback that your software is objecting to -- as you said, "blocked the virus from connecting to my computer". Except, there isn't a virus. You need to set up your software to accept the FTP connections or else avoid using URLs which begin with ftp:// Regards, Elsi

There is no virus on the Harrison County Archives page. I suspect that rather than alerting you to a virus when you attempted to go to ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/harrison that your software attempted to alert you of an inbound network connection. Since that is perfectly normal for the ftp:// protocol, it isn't an indication of a virus, trojan, or other malicious activity. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/harrison isn't a web page, rather the FTP server at RootsWeb returns the directory listing at that location. You then have the option of opening directories named 'bibles', 'bios', 'cemeteries', etc. Each of those contains text files which were submitted to the USGenWeb Archives. There are no viruses in these directories. I tried to rename one of my web pages and ended up losing the whole page. When I try to open it in Netscape Composer, the page is blank, but it appears when I click on 'preview'. It's still on my website and I thought that I could download it back to my local system just like I uploaded it, but that doesn't seem to work. I'm using WS_FTP, and I highlight the home.html page on the remote site, then click on the arrow pointing towards my local system. It doesn't download to my hard drive. Help please. Sherrill

Sure - you can have as many subdirectories as you want. Note, however, that the webserver can only see files and directories that are inside the public_html directory. Start there and then add whatever directories help you organize your site. Regards, Elsi

Thanks for the address, Cheryl. I have set that one up as a filter. I have all others set up with certain words in the subject line. Mine will go to the trash, BUT, I made a different folder named "A lot of Trash" as I look through them before I dump them as once in awhile I will get an email from someone I want to keep who has used one of the words I set up in the subject line to be dumped......"buy, sell, debt, bill, Viagra, account, credit card, own, etc." I don't remember which word it was, but I do look at it first.
