    1. [RW-Help] MySQL and PHP
    2. Cynthia C Turk
    3. Hello, As a very new webmaster (questionable title) someone is offering to submit some data to our gen. society page. He wants to know if Rootsweb supports MySQL and PHP to use as a search engine. I am not savvy enough to understand this, much less to be able to answer his question. Is there some place that would tell me about advanced search engines to put on rootsweb pages? He wants to be able to search different fields of a birth transcription and be able to search many files at once. This will be a large database for our county, and the information is rather fuzzy--many mispellings and unnamed children. We like the search engine on Rootsweb's Social Security Index. Is there any hope? Thanks for all the help I have been reading on this list this month. Cynthia Turk www.rootsweb.com/~ohlcgs/ www.rootsweb.com/~ohlake/

    3. G'Day Laurie For Webspace requests usually the reply email gives a web address such as Host: users.rootsweb.com UserID ******* Password ******* But I have not been able to access my site via users.Rootsweb.com but did find the link http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/editor/ Four options are given on the Top left hand corner Online Editor: Freepages Online Editor: Homepages Online Editor: Virtual Accounts Online Editor: www Choose one based on the account you requested. Click on it and it will take you to the File Manager section where you need to input your user ID and password. Once done this will take you to your Index and editing page where you can either upload offline built webpages or create basic ones from the tools given. The top three work fine for me but yesterday all of a sudden I was being denied access to Online Editor:www So I have requested technical assistance. The advice is that the link is being worked on due to technical problems. For those interested I am building a Website for Dorset Parish register info. Unlike other English counties where parish info is readily accessable, Dorset is very much a big black hole unless you can get to the local record office. To correct this problem I am setting up this site to put up known entries supplied by other family historians who do have parish register info to share with others. The Site can be viewed at : http://www.rootsweb.com/~engdorse/Dorset_Parishes.html The response from volunteer submissions has been enormous. It will greatly aid those researching thois English county. regards regards Michael Cheeseman WAGS 4520 <:-)> Rootsweb List Administrator - details below _^\ |\ _/ \ ._| \. / | NT|__ \QLD |___|NSW \ WA |SA |_____\ \* ,--.| VIC / \___/ \___/ _ V (TAS) ******************************************************* Western Australian Genealogy Society member http://www.wags.org.au/ Some Of My 200+ Family Lines being researched Genealogy Research Interests http://www.wags.org.au/mid/4520.htm WAGS Member Swan River Pioneers 1829-1838, WAGS 1788-1868 Convict and Historical Research Group Committee member, WAGS Pensioner Guards Group member Convenor proposed WAGS New South Wales Group Convenor proposed WAGS Wessex Group Inaugral member WAGS East Anglia Group Perth Dead Persons Society member http://www.perthdps.com/ Genealogy Research Interests http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/research/che01.html Rootsweb Email Lists I Administer with 900+ members: AUS-WA-ALBANY-REGION-L, AUS-WA-CONVICT-L, AUS-WA-GERALDTON-L, AUS-WA-KALGOORLIE-REGION-L, AUS-WA-NORTHERN-REGION-L, AUS-WA-PENSIONER-GUARDS-L, AUS-WA-SOUTHEAST-L, AUS-WA-SOUTHWEST-L, AUS-WA-WHEATBELT-L, BOULTON-L, BUNTER-L, CHANT-L, CHAPPLE-L, CHAPPEL-L, CHEESEMAN-UK-L, CORNWALL-L, CROXFORD-L, DOGGETT-L, FREEBODY-L, HANCHARD-L, LARK-L, LARKE-L, MUDFORD-L, SAMUELS-L, SARGEANT-L, THOMAS-UK-L, TOMLINSON-UK-L. -----Original Message----- From: Laurie Caulder [mailto:lac701@bellsouth.net] Sent: Saturday, 9 March 2002 11:21 AM To: RootsWeb-Help-D@rootsweb.com Subject: Ok I feel stupid but Where is my website.. If you "clean" a gedcom on WorldConnect, and have it available as a full download should you need it, will others be able to download the "cleaned" or "uncleaned" gedcom if you have allowed the download option? If you make the GEDCOM available for full download (or even limited download) the *cleaned* version of the GEDCOM is the one that visitors to the site would be downloading. However, the *submitter* of the GEDCOM can download the full UNcleaned version by going to the set-up page and using their user name and password to "retrieve GEDCOM." If the submitter wishes to download the *cleaned* version, he can do that also by downloading the GEDCOM from the user page for his database. Joan

They have the choice of removing a GEDCOM (which leaves basic account information in place (to be used in case where the submitter may wish to reuse the account in the future--this option preserves the user name) or removing the account which removes ALL information. > > You need to get gedclean again or a similar program unless you want to clean > out the living individuals by hand. Here is a download link: > http://www.raynorshyn.com/gedclean/ Not true--WorldConnect itself has the most advanced living cleaners you can find anywhere. Trying to preclean a GEDCOM can actually interfere with WorldConnect's living cleaners ability to do what they were created to do. Also, by uploading the complete GEDCOM while selecting the disply option you want permits you in the future to download the entire unaltered GEDCOM should you need it as a backup for lost data on your own computer. If you preclean the GEDCOM only the altered data would be available to recover in an emergency. Joan

Public_html is a directory created on the RootsWeb server to contain your account files. When you upload, you must upload your files to meme/public_html for your files to be visible on the web. If you use the File Manager for your uploads, your files will automatically be placed in the public_html directory for your account. Your main/home/entry page should be named index.html (all lower case letters). That will be delivered as the default when you visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~meme/ That page should contain links to the other pages at your site, and those pages should have a link back to index.html so your visitors can navigate your site easily :) Pat

    3. You're asking a lot of questions here; let me see if I can help. First, do you have the ability to delete what you submitted to the worldconnect site? I'm not sure what parameters they've set. It looks like you can at least revise it. You need to get gedclean again or a similar program unless you want to clean out the living individuals by hand. Here is a download link: http://www.raynorshyn.com/gedclean/ I don't understand any of your questions about the Rootsweb email address that you listed; are you asking about your website account at www.scrtc.com or a Rootsweb account? If asking about Rootsweb, what is your account name and URL? How do you plan to upload to the internet; do you have ftp access? As for the last question, anything you put on the internet is available to the public. You don't "own" a copyright to anything that is factual or in the public domain. Your notes are copyrightable, but do you really have the legal resources to protect that copyright? A copyright is only as good as the lawyers behind it. Assume that anything you submit to the internet in any form will show up on a Family Tree Maker CD one of these days if it hasn't already. Someone else has likely already grabbed your gedcom and turned it into part of their genealogy. What are you using for graphics? Are those original? You need to be aware of breaking other people's copyrights online, too. I'd suggest since you really don't seem to know how to get started with this that you hire someone to get you moving and let them show you how to update. You can certainly do this over the phone and via email; you don't need to hire a web designer who is local but you do need one with genealogy experience. If your daughter can't figure out what you need, please think about hiring someone for a few hours to help you through the rough spots. I did that in the beginning of my web design career and it's helped tremendously. Web designers can save you a ton of headaches and heartaches. I help others with their sites all the time and often can get people up and running with a working site for under $100 of my billable time. Good luck! Laurie, we have all been where you are, completely confused. So it was good that you wrote to us! First, did you get a Homepages account, or a Freepages account? You will have a different URL to your site, depending on where your account is. Assuming it is Freepages, let's pretend that your account name is ~laurie. If so, your account can be found here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~laurie (for your genealogy). You also have quite a few other possibilities, such as family, pets, etc., which you can use. If you wanted to start with your pets, the URL would be http://freepages.pets.rootsweb.com/~laurie To use your space, you can either use the Freepages File Manager http://freepages.rootsweb.com/fileman/ to create and/or upload your page, or a program such as Notepad, Composer, Arachnaphilia, or Frontpage to create your page, and an FTP program to upload it. Tell us a little about what you want to do with your site, and we can give you more specific help. Valorie http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~valorie PS: You may want to spend some time at Betsy's page, checking out a few of the links: http://www.rootsweb.com/~betsy/helpfree.htm

I don't want all living people gone-- I'm living ! I want no one > born after 1960 in that file. Can that be done. Mary- If you are talking about a GEDCOM you are uploading or updating on WorldConnect my recommendation would be to include everything in the GEDCOM you upload and then use the advanced set-up page to select the option of treating individuals as living if they were born after 1960--you can do that on the advanced set-up page. You can also elect to exclude notes and sources from display using the advanced set-up page. My reason for suggesting this option rather than precleaning the GEDCOM you are going to upload is that preserving the original GEDCOM will come in handy should you ever need it as a backup in the event you should lose the data on your own computer. If you uploaded the entire database you will be able to download it in its entirety but if you alter the database before uploading it, you would only be able to download the incomplete database. Just because you upload the entire database doesn't mean you have to elect to *display* it all on WorldConnect. Also, WorldConnect's living filters are second to none, but precleaning your GEDCOM can effect the ablity of WorldConnect's living filters to do their job. > > I have one more question. I own copyright on my web page. While I know > that my genealogy is public record I do not ever mean to submit it to World > Family Tree. If you read both Ancestry and RootsWeb's AUPs and Privacy Pledges you will see that both have similar guarantees against charging for access to your data or placing it on a CD for sale. Joan

I do use a similar system on one of my sites (from Germany), and I've seen that this method is good if you have no more then 3 levels, with no more then about 8 subdivisions for item on a level. But the results are very dependent on what type of browser is used and/or Javascript is activated. So you must know the targeted public. In my case it's every body, so I will discontinue that type of menu (and frames). On the other side my counter statistics shows me that this outline is very popular. So I will probably move to a template driven system, with on the left side the menu and on the right side the content. That's ok in my context, because I do know enough of HTML coding. I do use HTML Validator Pro 6.0 for their template system. At this moment I convert one of the sites I maintain to see if what I want to do is 1) better and 2) demands less time to maintain. The first tests are positive. It's easier to maintain then a framed site. The non-genealogical site (in Dutch) will probably be uploaded around 15/03/02. One of the motives to use HTML Validator is that I've burned my fingers more the two times with packages, who do in fact depend on one person.
