    3. Hi Janelle: > Can someone tell me how to get a simple search engine that doesn't have > an advertising logo? I use Freefind as I only have 475 pages so far.....! When and if I run out of allowed pages I may check out Search Maker Pro which is linked below. It seems to be very interesting in that it is not dependent on a "host remote site"....! It appears that it will index the site and provide the search html page for you all within your web site....! The program has limited version (shareware) but the full version; for 1 site it costs $40.00 which sounds decent if it does what one wants....! http://www.searchmakerpro.com/ Good luck.....Murray Pletsch http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~murrayp

RootsWeb does not allow you to install your own software on the RootsWeb servers. Therefore, you will have to use some external search engine. Feel free to set up a server with htdig and connect it to your RootsWeb web site. Regards, Elsi

    3. Janelle, you need a search engine that allows you to specify an "entry point", like this: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylnphs/ . That's the starting point I use with PicoSearch for the site I manage. I like it -- and it seems to be quite popular with RootsWebers. You can try it out on the site mentioned above. Click the PicoSearch logo for details. It's pretty flexible, and easy to set up. -R. Janelle Martin wrote: > I would like to put a very simple search engine to my site. Steven- The gateway has to be ON on the board side to send messages from the board to the list. Having the gateway posts allowed on the list side is only half of the process. Contact the board admin to make sure the admin agrees to having the gateway turned on the board side -- then the board admin can write to messageboards@rootsweb.com to have the gateway turned on. If the board has no admin or if you are also the board admin, you can then write directly to the messageboards address. Joan

Annnita: RootsWeb uses different criteria for determining how to accommodate requests for Society and Project web sites versus personal web sites. Each individual is permitted one and only one personal web site on the FreePages server. Societies are generally allowed a single web site on the WWW server. Given that your society is one large enough to have its own subprojects, there probably would not be a problem with having the Society site and the Genealogy Club site as separate accounts on the RootsWeb server. With all that said, however, the only person who can give you a definitive answer is the Accounts manager, Betsy. You can take one of two approaches: 1) Fill out the application requesting the account and give your explanation in the form 2) Send an e-mail to accounts@rootsweb.com asking what her response would be if you had submitted the application. Personally, I think #2 is extra work if she says 'Yes' and it's the same amount of work as #1 if she says 'No'. Just go for it. Elsi

    3. I also manage two different accounts at Rootsweb, besides my own personal genealogical website. They both fall under geographical web space. I explained the situation to them and had no problem getting two accounts. The first is a locality account for my area, Manitoulin Island, which was given the url of www.rootsweb.com/~onmanito The second was an Ontario GenWeb account that I may someday give up and transfer to a new manager and did not wish to have it combined with my locality account, based on the fact that if given up the new manager would have access to my user name and password. They understood and gave me an account for this genweb site at www.rootsweb.com/~onmanit2 So it was no problem, and I still have my own freepages account for my personal surname research Can't hurt to ask. However, I do know however that Historical societies fall under a different category, not locality. Locality is "County, State, World Project Accounts" and Historical Societies is Genealogical/Historical Society Accounts. Both can be found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~websites/ and click on Request free webspace on the left hand side of the screen. 3. Patrice was told a person can have a second website. As to how the password etc. etc would work I don't know yet. This I will be looking into next. You did not see the reply, because apparently rootsweb has sent up this mailing list so a reply only goes to the person who you are replying to. Which I think is silly, it only makes a mailing list quiet. So I try to remember not to use the reply button, then cut and paste the meat of a message in my letter. Using the main e-mail address. Rather, you're using 'mailto:' action in your form. A 'mail merge' form invokes the RootsWeb-supplied mailmerge CGI program. You have: <.form action="mailto:nelhatch@rapidnet.com" method="post" > MailMerge would look like this: <.form action="/cgi- bin/mailmerge.cgi/~nhatcher/yourtemplate.txt"> > A user tells me that when she submitted her msg she got the following error > msg: > > "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot > fulfill the message request. In order to properly perform a 'mailto:' URL or form action, the user must configure a mail client with in their browser configuration. For Internet Explorer, the default mail client is Outlook Express or Outlook. For Netscape, the default mail client is Netscape Messenger. Some e-mail programs will configure themselves as the default e-mail client in the browser. (Eudora and Pegasus are two that do this.) If there is no default e-mail client configured, the browser will put up an error message when the user attempts to click on a 'mailto:' URL. > Can someone tell me what the problem is? Done. The user should follow the directions given by his browser. *or* you can convert your form to use Mail Merge instead.
