    2. Lisa Perkins
    3. Hi, I am setting up a data submission form using the mailmerge cgi script suggested by rootsweb. After the data is submitted, a screen appears saying the message has been sent with a link that says "back to form". Pressing "back to form" brings me to an unknown form that has nothing to do with my web page. Is there a different way that I should be setting up my mail merge? I would like this link to link back to my own form, or not have this link at all, if that is not possible. My form page at my web site is here: HTTP://www.rootsweb.com/~ilfmm/new_page_6.htm Lisa Perkins l.a.perkins@attbi.com

    3. Dennis, I know exactly how you feel. I post lots of obits and other data. I can't begin to count the times that I've just been typing along and all of a sudden my screen will freeze and I wonder what's going on until one of those intrusive pop-up adds appear. The Intel one, in particular, used to get me all the time. There were even times that I had to reboot and then retype everything I'd typed before the ad caused my screen to freeze up. I would just absolutely go ballistic! In my opinion this "in your face" style of advertising is worthless. I know it has the opposite effect on me - they're the last company I'd buy anything from! I have no problem with advertising because I know it takes money to keep the sites online, but there has to be a way to do it (such as banners) that doesn't drive visitors away or harass the volunteers whose efforts it takes to make the site a success. It might be a little different if RootsWeb wasn't a research orientated site, but it is. Researchers are the last people that want to be disturbed when they're trying to concentrate on their work. I know when I'm researching I'm not about to drop everything and go buy tires! B. The worst part of it is, killing the window sometimes kills my mouse and I have to reboot my computer to recover. This seems to happen if you interrupt javascript ads before they completely open. 1. [RW-Help] Mail Merge - guest book
    2. Susan Taylor
    3. I took over the following site about a year ago: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ This site came with a couple of guest books that are giving me fits. I haven't done any of this mail merge stuff or such before and really haven't successfully done any now. :( Sooooo pleaseeeee, keep help at the 2nd grade level. The particular guest book I'm trying to work on now is a gigantic mess. I want to tidy it up, change the contact Email address in it, and move it to another location on the site. On making any changes in it and/or moving it into a folder of its own on the same site, it won't work. It is located at and works here - the original location with original files here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgsmain.htm and consists of: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgssign.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgsgest.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgsbook.htm I'm trying to tidy up the guest book and move the whole kit and caboodle into a folder of its own /pcgs/ where it will be accessed via - doesn't work here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgs/pcgsmain.htm consisting of: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgs/pcgssign.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgs/pcgsgest.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgs/pcgsbook.htm On moving it I changed the mail merge coding in pcgssign.htm from: ACTION="http://www.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/local/mailmerge.cgi/home0013/home/maplymou/public_html/pcgsgest.htm" METHOD="post" ENCTYPE="application/x-www-form-urlencoded"> to ACTION="http://www.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/local/mailmerge.cgi/home0013/home/maplymou/public_html/pcgs/pcgsgest.htm" METHOD="post" ENCTYPE="application/x-www-form-urlencoded"> I changed the coding in the template pcgsgest.htm from: ACTION=File: /home0013/home/maplymou/public_html/pcgsbook.htm OUTPUT_FORM= to ACTION=File: /home0013/home/maplymou/public_html/pcgs/pcgsbook.htm OUTPUT_FORM= When I move the files connect to it with the new coding, I get the following dialog from mail merge on submitting the form: ========================= Mail Merge Gateway The following is a copy of the mail that was submitted. Do ***not*** make any changes/corrections to the guestbook file (pcgsbook.htm), Then it will submit and post to the guestbook file. Also if I leave it all in its original location and try to make any changes to the guestbook (pcgsbook.htm) it won't work. It won't recognize the guest book. After making **any** changes to the guestbook, on submitting a form up pops the message: ===================================== An error occurred while processing this form: Failed opening log file /home0013/home/maplymou/public_html/pcgsbook.htm: Permission denied ===================================== Geeeee, I hope someone out there can work thru the above and make sense out of what I'm trying to say and do. This is all beyond me. I wandered over to the mail merge info on RootsWeb and tried to make sense of it all there. I was a dismal failure. Do note at this time I'm not trying to work with the guestbook on the homepage of: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/ - only working on the guestbook located at both the original and new locations: original location http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgsmain.htm moved location http://www.rootsweb.com/~maplymou/pcgs/pcgsmain.htm Thank you for your patience. The Search Thingy (http://sitesearch.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search) is not based on htdig, but it crawls through all pages at RootsWeb and indexes them. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to restrict it to searching a single account/site. So, you're left with using an external search engine. Regards, Elsi

    1. Re: [RW-Help] Re: simple "site" search engine
    2. Rod Dav4is
    3. Patrice, The difference is /where/ the search engine is. With Pico the the like, they run code on their own third party server (1. you, 2. RootsWeb, 3. Pico). Pico "surfs" the sites identified by their clients with something like a browser that builds indices of the words in the pages. It is from these indices that they then return search results. The agent doing the surfing and index building is sometimes called a spider. After the index is built, when someone does a PicoSearch from my RootsWeb site, that sends a request to the Pico server which then looks in the index it has already build to formulate a response. Except for the initial building, or rebuilding, of the index, no interaction with RootsWeb is required. With htdig (I assume), no third party server is involved. Search requests are passed to the server of the site being searched. This means that, in your case, RootsWeb would have to have the htdig code installed to handle the request. I don't know if this particular product keeps an index or actually reads all the pages for each search request. Either approach will work, although the index method is likely to be much faster. I hope that clears things up for you... -R. genealogy@cfl.rr.com wrote: > Elsi, > > I don't understand. Unlike Pico or FreeFind, it's not a ready-to-use search facility already running on someone else's server. So -- when you say that you're thinking of using htdig, my assumption is that you'd like to install htdig to use for searching your site. If, however, you found a server that is offering the use of htdig to index your site or if you want to install htdig on a server that you manage, you can use it to provide the search facility for your web space at RootsWeb.
