    3. This is not an exclusive copyright of Ancestry.com. The copyright not only includes Ancestry.com,its subsidiary CamRon, Inc. but "or third party providers and may be used only in accordance with this limited use license." We are the third party providers and part of that copyright. Michelle- RootsWeb and Ancestery are all one company as I'm sure you know--and I'm certain the financial aspects of maintaining two separate but similar sites played a part in the decision to merge AWT and WorldConnect. It benefits users of both sites as all data is searchable in one search now. It is actually a win-win situation for submitters to either site for their databases to be searchable from both Ancestry and RootsWeb. I think your other question is best left for an official answer. 3. Joan & everyone who replied, Thank you. No one at Ancestry ever answered my email. The replies partially answered my question, but it still doesn't explain why they merged the info (considering that by merging the data, they in effect copied info from it's ORIGINAL HOME & republished it on another site whether it's RW *or* Ancestry). Now, one other question since Ancestry still hasn't answered my email . . . 1) Ancestry's Terms & Conditions state that you don't have to give ANY personal information to use the FREE sections but 2) Ancestry's website refuses to allow me to access the FREE sections unless I sign up for a free account 3) To get a free account, they insist that I give them personal information I don't want a free account. They send me enough spam as it is in their attempt to get me to sign up for their paid services. Thanks, Michelle

That is a matter of semantics. The data was originally on messages boards, and it is now on message boards. That the new program delivering the data allows you to choose more than one color scheme is irrelevant. > Now, one other question since Ancestry still hasn't answered my > email . . . > > 1) Ancestry's Terms & Conditions state that you don't have to give > ANY personal information to use the FREE sections > > but > > 2) Ancestry's website refuses to allow me to access the FREE > sections unless I sign up for a free account What free areas are you attempting to access where you need to be logged in? > 3) To get a free account, they insist that I give them personal > information > > I don't want a free account. They send me enough spam as it is in > their attempt to get me to sign up for their paid services. Let's face facts. Ancestry didn't buy Rootsweb as a Good Deed. They did it because they figured that their outlay of cash would make a decent profit for the investors. If it does NOT make a profit for them, or the entire enterprise isn't profitable, then it will fold or be sold. And then where will (and our data) be? I hate their spamming, and I hate the popups, but I'm in the minority. They WORK, or they wouldn't keep doing them. Rootsweb tried voluntary memberships, and that didn't work. They added banner ads, and THAT wasn't enough to pay the bills, either. Ancestry MUST add another revenue stream..... Memberships, banner ads, popups. The free areas, including Rootsweb, only exist to bring people to the pay areas. That is the practical reality. Websites cost money -- the bigger, the more successful, the more money. Valorie

The important thing is that the subscribers be notified that this is policy and reminded prior to the renewal, and Ancestry DOES properly inform subscribers of their policy. Failure to read and comprehend the notices isn't really the fault of the company. Joan

So far I know there isn't a code, but there is a trick ... When I publish a set pages, that must be reviewed by others (submitters, ...), before really go public, then I upload them to a specific directory of the site, called "beta", "test", "change04" or similar. Once all agree, then I upload them on their normal place and delete the previous version. Greetings, Luc Matthijs Evere (Brussels, Belgium) luc.matthijs@advalvas.be

Michelle- Ancestry never DUPLICATED WorldConnect--it merged the two separate projects--WorldConnect (on the RootsWeb side) and Ancestry World Tree (on the Ancestry side). The combined product is accessible either from a RootsWeb or Ancestry interface. Compilation copyright doesn't mean that Ancestry is claiming to own submitter databases--it simply means that someone couldn't take all of WorldConnect and legally reproduce it elsewhere without violating Ancestry's compilation copyright for instance.
