My images were supposed to be usaW and usgw-m3. I tried using Microsoft Works to edit my pages. I think it must have renamed my two images to Image 15 and 16 on my disc and not the server. Thanks for the help both Drew and Douglas. I THINK, my images are up and running now. Hi, I have found that two of the images on my main page (usually called the index page) are not showing up. I can't figure out what the problem is as they are listed in the public_html. The strangest part is that if I have the disc on which the images are saved in the A drive, the images show up if I open my page from favorites. On my other pages the Gen.Web logo looks strange for some reason. They looked fine when I first uploaded the pages. I haven't yet tried correcting those. I created my page with Netscape Composer. I just tried publishing my web from FrontPage 2000 (using FTP). FrontPage says the site was successfully published but when I go to check out the page "live" I get a 404 Not Found Error (page not found on server). Any ideas what happened and how I can fix it? Or sleep. Thank you all very much! Sleep deprived or not, I got it fixed with your help. I'm still not quite sure HOW I screwed up nor how I actually fixed it. I think I just reloaded the entire Hamptoneer site into the old hamptonr directory. Everything works and no parts left over... I do appreciate it. And now to sleep... Rel@ively, Patrice
See the url below: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/hamptonr/hamptonr/ This is where your Hampton website is actually located. The website should be located here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/hamptonr What has happened is that you nested your hamptonr directory within another hamptonr directory. Two solutions, depending on your method of updating/deleting, one method may be easier than another: 1. Delete hamptonr (the first one, and include deletion of all subdirectories, which will delete hamptonr (2)) You should then be able to upload your hamptonr directory directly to the root of ~greenhow, and this will restore it. 2. Move all contents of hamptonr (2) into hamptonr (1), then delete hamptonr (2) folder. Hi, I don't know how I did it but when I deleted a directory, and then added another with the same name I didn't do something right and now the public directory comes up when I access the site. The url is http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~greenhow/hamptonr/. It used to open directly to the site. I know I did something stupid, but I can't figure out what it is. I've been up all night, so I'm no longer thinking clearly. Needing caffeine and care. Or sleep. HELP PLEASE! Rel@ively, Patrice
what I see? Resources folder (the folder contained only WS FTP Log) WS FTP log hamptonr folder for the starts: 1. WS FTP log should not be there. (both of them) 2. index.htm (or html depending on your software) is missing rootsweb.com/~greenhow/index.htm W. Whenever someone makes a complaint like this, the very first thing that you should do is to validate your page against the W3C standard (specification, actually), using the free (and quite fast) validator at this location: http://validator.w3.org/ Only if your html code is certified clean can you begin to point fingers. Your page has lots of errors, beginning with the invalid Doctype tag, which is case sensitive and should be coded thus: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> You have lots of minor errors, like missing ALT= attributes on your images (required by the standard), but perhaps the errors causing the problem are with your SHAPE=POLYGON attributes, which are all misspelled: Error: value of attribute "SHAPE" cannot be "POLYGON"; must be one of "RECT", "CIRCLE", "POLY", "DEFAULT" Incidentally, the required ALT= attributes can be coded ALT="", which satisfies the checker and turns off all those errors so you can get down to brass tacks. That W3C checker is the best; accept no substitutes. It is written and maintained by the same folks who own the standard, so has a better chance of being correct. -R. Hello List-- Can anyone give me some ideas on this one? Received an email yesterday from a researcher who told me she is unable to see the pictures on my site. I replied asking a couple of questions in an attempt to find out why this was happening. My initial thought was she didn't have the 'view pictures' activated in her Internet options or it was an ISP problem, but from her responses to my questions, it appears my site is the only one giving her a problem. The following is a copy of her response-- "the map of brown co I am unable to see. Home page with green trees and maroon colored leaves I can see that. and I can read the writing but when the pictures try to come up it freezes. Your web site is the only one that does this. Also a 404 message comes up when I try to axcess the other info you have. This means something is not working right on the web site according to my windows 98 book. Please help me . thank you. I would really like to see this site ." She can read text and see the background on the home page, but not the clickable map and can't view the other pages. I have this feeling, the answer is 'right on the tip of my tongue" so to speak, but there are so many answers, I thought it best to put it out here for other opinions. This is the only complaint I've received, so it's difficult to believe it is something with the site or with the server. Appreciate any suggestions. If you dont get expert advice, this might help. I use a free program WS-FTP LE to connect to Homepages. Nelson: I just logged into the server with WS-FTP LE, so I can verify that the server is up and working just fine. I'm confused as to what FTP process you are using to upload your pages. If you are using the Front Page 'publish' dialog, then you will use this format for the host name where the dialog states "Specify the location to publish your web to:" ftp://homepages.rootsweb.com/public_html You will be prompted for userID and password. If you are using your browser to upload the files, then use this format: ftp://userid@homepages.rootsweb.com/u1/userid/public_html You'll be prompted for your password. From here, click File/Upload file -- and you'll be prompted for the file(s) to upload. I know that FrontPage publishing to HomePages is working because I just now uploaded a page -- see it at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lcompton/index.htm -- (I already have an index.html as my main entry point, so you have to include the file name to see this new one.) There's a possibility that AOL's network is interfering with the uploads. The usual way to get around this is to put your FTP client into 'passive mode', but the FrontPage upload dialog does not have this option. Therefore, you may need to obtain a standard FTP client such as WS-FTP LE, freeware which can be downloaded from places such as http://www.tucows.com/ Regards, Elsi
