    3. Sorry you had the problem but it's a relief to know it has happened to someone else. I will definitely check on the spyware. Like with you it's all RW sites. Last night I uploaded files to a site at USgenweb. This morning I figured I must have blown up all of Rootsweb. Keep your fingers crossed. Thanks everyone I really appreciate all the help you have offered. Hope my county coordinated doesn't think I am too much trouble. It may be something more than you are able to get out of your computer, as mine was. Just a thought. 1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] NVU software problem
    2. SouthPawPhilly
    3. I hope that someone on this list can help me. I have used NVU and Kompozer for my freepages and GenWeb sites for a couple of years now but find that neither of these programs will open. When I click on the shortcut all that happens is that I get a flashing hourglass icon that will not stop without a reboot. When I look in Task Manager under processes nvu.exe is jumping around so quickly that it's impossible to 'catch' it to end the process. I have uninstalled both programs and as far as I know I removed all traces of the programs in the registry. I then did a fresh install but still keep getting the flashing hourglass icon. I have tried this about four times over the past two weeks. Just for the heck of it, I went to cnet and downloaded a couple of other editing programs both of which worked with no problems - I don't like them, however. I posted my question to the Kompozer/NVU forum but got no answers there. I am using Windows XP with the latest versions of Kompozer and NVU. If anyone can offer any advise on what would keep an application from running on a computer I'd be most grateful. Thanks so much, Joan Asche [email protected]

    3. I think that it is the *server* (i.e. at RootsWeb) that does this. When presented with a URL lacking a filename, like this <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Edav4is/>, it (the server) looks for an index file for that directory, using types html and htm. If no index file is found, it presents its own index of the files in that directory (as here <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Edav4is/test/>). Some servers may look for additional file types. Some servers will not present the bare directory as an index. This can be proved by using the SamSpade tool to see exactly what a server returns for a URL. -R. John Slaughter wrote: > Where you see your index page in a list of the files doesn't matter. This means that a user can type in the shorter version ( http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~memoryhill/ ) and still get to your "home page." Browsers "see" the index as a default. On your computer, you should have a folder called My Webs. In there, your website folder should be called history --- in http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~memoryhill/ , your pages are in the "history" category of freepages. If later, you make a web in the "genealogy" category of freepages, then, under MyWebs, you would create a folder called "genealogy." In your computer folder called My Webs, with the website folder called "history", you simply have the "index.htm" freely or loose under that folder. Since I can find your home page now, it appears you already have done this correctly. On your Home Page now, you have a link at the top called <link>index.html<link>. You should not need a link there. As long as your index page is in the place I described, above, the website will work the way it should. You said "When I download additional pages ..." Could you explain more on this? You should have your most recent "pages" on your computer -- you should not need to download each one to work on a page. When you publish or UPload a page, Rootsweb adds a banner code. When you take a published page and DOWNload it.... work on it, then RE-publish or UPload, Rootsweb ADDS another banner code. This is why right now you have 3 banners top and bottom (indicating you have published or uploaded it 3 times). Others on the list can tell you the exact code to look for in your coding... When they tell you the code, you'll need to (on your computer side) look for the banner code inside each page and DELETE it. Rootsweb then will ADD it back again when you re-publish the page, so you will have ONE banner on top and on bottom. I know this is a lot of information--- just take it one paragraph at a time. One other thing you should be aware of.... A browser "reads" a page by looking for the DOCTYPE, then the HTML tag, then the HEAD tag, and closing /HEAD , then the BODY tag.... and at the end, it looks for the closing /BODY, and finally, the closing /HTML tag. Then, when Rootsweb adds its banners, it looks for certain tags. Look at your page now. See how RW TOP banners are stuck in AFTER your page has already started? That's because RW is not "seeing" the correct tags where they should be. The bottom tags are OK and RW banners are OK. Just take one problem at a time. You'll get each thing fixed. Just take your time and remember that we all started off learning. Judy

    3. Sharon, Browsers will always look for the index page (index.htm or index.html) in a directory folder and display it first. You need to make sure that it's named in lower case, not upper or mixed case (no Index.htm or INDEX.htm, etc.) Sherri -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of sharon cox Sent: Monday, November 12, 2007 7:51 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] ROOTSWEB-HELP Digest, Vol 2, Issue 132 THanks for the previous help, now another question. 1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Way cool web tool for fun and as a visual way to see your site

    3. This is toooo cool ! http://www.aharef.info/static/htmlgraph/ Anyone who likes histograms will love this. And for those who've never seen a histogram, no problem! Think of it as just a pretty picture of your website. It takes a while to do a page print (I couldn't get a screenshot). Or--- The guy (gal?) will make a jpg of it for a donation. You can see how your web looks in a new way-- plus, you can run it every so often to see how your web looks after additions. You can even check out your friend's website--LOL Hope everyone staggers when they go to this site--- it's such fun and I wouldn't want to overload the person's site. Judy

    3. Where you see your index page in a list of the files doesn't matter. Web browsers always look for the index.htm/index.html first. They'll also look for index.asp, index.php and some others. The browsers have a certain order that they will look for the index in the event you have acceptable index files with different extensions. I don't know what the precedence is. Rootsweb does not protect web site folders. If there is no index, anyone who goes to a folder will see a list of all of your files in that folder. While they can't do anything to any of the files, they can copy any of them that they want. They can also access any sub-folders in that one. If you don't want this happening, it is a good idea to put an index.htm in every folder on your site. It doesn't even have to have anything in it. I have a file named unauthorized.html. Anytime I create a new folder that contains files, images, etc., that is not to be seen by the public, I upload the unauthorized.html into the folder and then rename it index.html. Mine says, "You are not authorized to view the contents of this folder. If you feel you have reached this message in error, please write me." The "write me" is an e-mail link.
