Since you specifically mentioned portscans (which is a potential threat from the outside) that is why I mentioned the router protecting you from that source. As far as I know routers have their own internal IP address and do serve as a hardware firewall. I can't think of any that don't. I would not recommend turning off your *firewall* for even a few seconds. The risk is just too great. The exposure is not to email, but to the ubiquitous port scanners <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_scanner>. *You *cannot detect when your computer has been portscanned, that is what the firewall does. Kathy, When Pat G. told me about Frontpage Cleaner, I had my doubts and worries. "Would it help? Will it mess something else up?" But I had no choice-- Fp would not work right. I'm glad I did it--- and now use the Cleaner regularly! Here are some other "tricks" to make Fp "behave" and act "friendly" with Rootsweb (after all, we don't exactly want RW & Fp to "marry"--we're just sending them on a "date" with each other! LOL). After each step, try to upload---but don't do any more deleting ;-) 1. After you run Fp Cleaner, re-open Fp program and the Web folder... open the web. 2. Re-calibrate links. 3. Upload. 4. If still problems, open Reports> All Files. Look through your list of files to see if you have any filename problems. It's been beaten to death here, but *sometimes* RW & Fp can't decide if its ok to have spaces in file names--or not. Sometimes I find one OLD file with a space and "correct" that--- and the upload works. Shrug. Ftp error 550 usually means there is *something* the server is rejecting...or rejecting from Fp. (Filezilla however uploads the same "problem" file-- go figure.) 5. Open EACH FOLDER in your web. OPEN those "hidden" _vti folders too. LOOK for any file TYPES that RW might not like.... example - *.zip files. A copy will be in the _vti folder if it was an image type file. 6. Upload 7. Just to rule out the problem, try turning OFF any Firewall you have. Recently, Norton changed its settings when it updated and even though Fp is in its "accept" list, I couldn't upload a large site with my firewall on. Turn it off 5-10 minutes & try upload. 8. Another "trick" I use is to go to File Manager and manually upload 3 or 4 "difficult" files or images. Then, I re-try with Fp. If Fp was just "confused" before, sometimes using File Manager makes Fp scared enough (lol) to work right. If these all fail, write again and I will see if I can remember anything else I've tried. Pat, I had forgotten that I did download FP Cleaner and just ran it and am running a scan and clean right now. If that doesn't work I'll download FileZilla - thanks for the time. As I'm thinking about this though, I started having problems when I downloaded FP Cleaner, even though I never used it. Thanks, will let you know if I need help (probably will!) with FileZilla. Peggy, I am using that directory. I even tried deleting all the files on the server and uploading an all new site but only part of it will get there. I get the following: 550_overlay/will_of_solomon_jones.htm_nav_copy 2-of-network-blitz-/-(1).gif even though I eliminated this file from the publish list. Seems to have something to do with the "theme" graphics. I tried changing all the pages to exactly the same theme (copy 3 of network-blitz/gif) but the file names won't change on the upload. I'm so confused! As I suggested before, download TopStyle Lite and install it then follow these instructions - Using TopStyle with Microsoft FrontPage If FrontPage is installed, TopStyle will detect it during installation and configure itself as FrontPage's CSS editor. You can also do this manually in FrontPage by selecting Tools > Options > Configure Editors and adding TopStyle as the editor for CSS files. Once TopStyle is configured as FrontPage's CSS editor, double-clicking on a style sheet in any of FrontPage's views will open it in TopStyle for editing.
