    2. David- There is no phone number to contact the RootsWeb HelpDesk staff/vols. primarily because they all work from home and not from the company headquarters. If you are having trouble with the new HelpDesk form (I had trouble with it also and needed help resolving the problems with the registration form) you can still contact the HelpDesk by emailing: [email protected] . Joan ------------ Is there anyone who has phone number for Rootsweb Helpdesk gang? The Helpdesk feature is NOT working and I can't get any single mail from any mailing list I manage and subscribe to, all because of some dweeb decided to block my domain on EVERYthing (all because my domain was off line for a day). 2. Dale Mower
    3. I’ve encountered a new problem trying to upload a small change to a website. I use FrontPage 2003, and when I go to publish the changes to HYPERLINK "ftp://users.rootsweb.com/public_html"ftp://users.rootsweb.com/public_html, I am getting the following message: “The server sent a response which FrontPage could not parse. If you are trying to connect to a Windows SharePoint Services server, check with the server’s administrator to make sure Windows SharePoint Services is installed properly.” Anyone shed some light on this? I’m baffled as I have a couple other websites I maintain on RootsWeb and those still upload with no problem. Thanks, Dale No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 2. Anderson
    3. I have a freepages site on my Strickland family line and hopefully I'm not dead yet......I feel alive ! Although my friend's site was not hosted by Rootsweb, it did start me thinking about such things and how to plan when I observed his family in mourning and having to deal with unwelcome contacts regarding the website. They will no doubt take the site down which is a pity as his genealogical material will be lost to others. I began wondering what policies Rootsweb might have for their free pages and what would happen to my free pages site. It makes sense to plan ahead for myself and my family should I become physically disabled or die. I also am the webmaster for a genealogy society site with Rootsweb. That one however, is no problem as the society "owns" the site and would take care of its maintenance. Thanks to everyone for their replies. Does anyone think Rootsweb will address occurrances such as death or physical inability to maintain the websites in a policy writing? I am guessing that it is each person's responsibility to plan ahead as to the longevity of the sites they have hosted by free pages. I've added a page to my "important" papers for my family, containing my instructions as to what to do with my site and server address/User Id/password to carry it out should I become physically disabled or die. 1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Trouble getting subscribed
    2. Vickie- Since you have no trouble subscribing and posting to THIS list it doesn't appear you have a general problem with RootsWeb lists. First check Password Central to be sure you are not already subcribed to the lists you are having trouble with: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ . If you are not subbed and your subsription attempts are not working--contact the list admins for assistance. To contact any RootsWeb list admin, write to: [email protected] replacing the generic word LISTNAME with the actual name of each list. Joan ------------- Is anyone having trouble getting subscribed to different lists? I have several that I like to belong to, but can not get a welcome message, or posts. I have tried subscribing 3 different times to quite a few of them with no results, zilch nodda. My internet connection is with dishnet. I was using dishmail, but have since gone back to outlook express and changed the format to read plain text, still nothing. Can anyone give me any help with this? Is it because I am using dishnet as my server? Vickie **************************************See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

BUT we all know just how much WORK goes into this webmaking. So please, strongly encourage to allow you to help them find a caretaker FIRST, rather than telling RW to delete the site. :-( I think if you posted what kind of site it is... what region, State... what topic... with who you'd prefer to take it (example: "The site covers ZingaLing County of New Hampshire, so the family prefers someone interested in NH counties. 3. Sharon, The info could be "absorbed" into another nearest website, or might be kept "intact" if that can be done. Is it a personal family site? Is it a county site? Is it in the GenWeb of States/Counties? If on RW side (not on freepages), it must have been a non-profit or county site. Could you tell us what the site was used for...so we can better help direct you (for them)? I'm sure we could find a new webmaster and the family could feel relieved knowing it's being taken care of & not have to do anything but give the account name and password. If it's a personal site or for anywhere in Pennsylvania or Maryland I would be happy to be a caretaker until a new webmaster is found. 2. Recently, a friend who had a website passed away and his family is trying to manage many things, including taking down the website as they have no interest. This makes me think about our Rootsweb sites......what happens if a webmaster dies? Would the family notify Rootsweb and have them take the site down, or would they find someone else to take it over??? If there is a policy on this, I haven't been able to find any reference to it on the Rootsweb site. ----- Sharon- A person's website is part of their estate and they should make their wishes known as to what is to be done with it either in their will or at least with their executor. They may want the website to remain or to be transferred to another person with the same interests or they may want it removed. A person should also plan for the future by passing along the password and account information to their heirs or chosen representative. If the heirs were to contact the RootsWeb HelpDesk RootsWeb would cooperate with whatever the heirs need to do to fulfill the deceased person's wishes. Of course, the above is assuming this is a private website the person set up and not a site representing a geneaelogy project--such as a USGenWeb County site. in the case of a project website the heirs would notify the project representative (SC or NC) and they would find a new person to take over the site.
