    2. John Slaughter
    3. Joan, Rootsweb IS screwed up. That is an accurate statement. Details were in the previous post. I read the statements regarding Ancestry.com and Rootsweb. They are putting all the spin on this that they possibly can. TGN (The Generations Network, formerly MyFamily.com) is taking over all that they can grab onto. Go to their site, http://www.thegenerationsnetwork.com/, and you'll find the following list: myfamily.com ancestry.com genealogy.com rootsweb.com ancestry.co.uk ancestry.ca ancestry.com.au ancestry.de ancestry.it ancestry.fr ancestry.se Next week the URLs will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. This is not something that is done with only a few weeks thought. This has been in the works for a long time. It doesn't matter that they'll be using redirects so that using the old URL will get you to the new one. As for the IPs, that, too, is very easy to change on the DNS servers. Approximately the middle of April, subject to change, EVERY page that is on Ancestry's servers will have a banner. Rootsweb will have their own banner, but it will still be on every page. This will be automatic and there will be no way to remove the banner. There is a special banner designed for USGenWeb sites. Of course, it says that the USGenWeb is a member of the Ancestry.com community. That is a crock. The USGenWeb webmasters will have to put special code on their main page to get the special banner. Rootsweb says they're working on a way that their servers will identify all pages on a USGenWeb site so that all pages get the special banner. Otherwise, they'll all get the regular Rootsweb/Ancestry.com banner. The Rootsweb Product Manager stated that the need for the banner was because the USGenWeb sites weren't generating enough revenue to cover the expense of hosting them. Only something like 20% of Rootsweb visitors go to Ancestry.com. All Rootsweb sites, including all freepages and even the personal sites that donors PAID for, now have the banners. That banner made a travesty of the memorial page for my son. That was on a site that I PAID for. The vast majority of USGenWeb sites that are hosted on Rootsweb have a Rootsweb logo stating that fact and a link to Rootsweb. Plus, most of these sites have links to Rootsweb resources where the banners are clearly visible. So are the ubiquitous little boxes to enter a surname and search. That gets you straight to Ancestry.com where they try to get you to sign up on the spot. If people are not visiting Ancestry.com from all of these links, maybe its because these people are savvy enough to know better. If you want to wear blinders, Joan, and not see the hand writing on the wall, that is up to you. I see this as the first steps toward trying to monopolize interet genealogy. I have already pulled eleven sites off of the Rootsweb servers. I have purchased my own domain for them. There will be about another 15 moving over the next week. There will be very few, if any, links to Rootsweb or Ancestry.com sites. Besides the URL being much better, which will help with search engines, we now have the ability to use PHP, CGI, Perl, databases and a lot more that Rootweb has not and never would provide. I also administer one of the largest free vital records projects. That was removed from the Rootsweb servers in October. It is nice to have the freedom to do with my site what needs to be done. We are looking at list software so that we can also remove the lists we use from Rootsweb. Rootsweb is going to remain free for a time. I see it becoming just a part of the larger pay site in about two years. As you can see, a number of us are doing our best to help Rootsweb with its overburdened servers. 3. We got it. Thank you. Rootsweb is all screwed up. Two different people, 2500 miles apart, using WS-FTP Pro and browser FTP and we couldn't get into the account. She had two freepages accounts and both logins went to the same account. The fileman URL worked and both accounts have been totally deleted from Rootsweb. They'll be moved to a non-Rootsweb server this weekend. It would probably be a good idea for everyone to move. TGN is going to monopolize internet genealogy. It'll probably be within a couple years and even the USGenWeb sites will be hidden behind pay-site bars. Watch what happens next week when they move all Rootsweb stuff onto the Ancestry servers. This isn't something that is done with just a few weeks thinking. This has to have been planned for quite some time. 3. In message <[email protected]>, [email protected] writes v Rootsweb can decide the name of 'the homepage' - when they set the site up - usually: index or default - and extension .htm .html (in rootsweb scenario - many other choices where server side code allowed eg .Asp) So if you try: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygwjp/index.html - that's the one that works - so that's the default My rootsweb site address is homepages.roostweb, - but I assume they follow the same thing freepages, where when you login with ftp you end up in an empty directory - except for another directory - public_html - where all your files should be placed if they are to be seen. 3. I can't answer why you didn't need to enter your username or pw. As for the public_html, you only see that when using an FTP program. The Rootsweb manager knows where to put your files and the public_html folder is transparent. 3. Terry, First, it isn't a Freepages account. It is a www account. This is the URL for the file manager. It has a page design tool. You can upload your files from there, too. http://www.rootsweb.com/fileman Alternatively, you can upload directly from your browser as if copying between two open directory windows on your own computer. Enter the following in your browser address bar. The last time I tried this, it was not working with IE7. ftp://[accountname]:[password]@users.rootsweb.com and then click public_html folder to open it and access your files. >From here, you should be able to open another window on your computer with your own files and simply drag and drop from one to the other. Sounds simple, but only trial will tell. Probably the easiest way to do this is to use an FTP program. A decent free one is CoreFTP lite. This one, as with using the browser, requires you to double-click the public-html folder that will show on the host side. 3. I'm attempting to upload files, but I've no clue as to how the ftp works, or rather, why it isn't working. I'm looking at the files from my IE browser. There doesn't seem to be my user name in there, or a file called index.htm, although the webpage shows okay. the website is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygwjp/ As I say, the webpage displays fine, but I'm not able to upload new files. I'm not using an FTP program, but I can get one, but where to I upload the files to? Thanks for the help --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Request your Freepages account information from PasswordCentral, http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com If you have changed email addresses since your account was created, write to [email protected] for assistance. Be sure to include your account name, your old email address, and any other information you remember. Pat
