    1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] your "labour of love"
    2. Sandy- RootsWeb's AUP should reassure you and also the announcement posted in the Newsroom. Read the section of the AUP on user-contributed data that states for user data RootsWeb serves only as the *distributor*. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/aup.html User-Provided Content Portions of the Service will contain user-provided content, to which you may contribute appropriate content (the “Submitted Content”) For this Content, the submitter is the owner, and RootsWeb.com is only a distributor. By submitting Submitted Content to RootsWeb.com, you grant MyFamily.com, Inc., the corporate host of the Service, a limited license to the Submitted Content to use, host, and distribute that Submitted Content and allow hosting and distribution on co-branded Services of that Submitted Content. You should submit only content which belongs to you and will not violate the property or other rights of other people or organizations. MyFamily.com, Inc. is sensitive to copyright and other intellectual property rights of others. Announcement: http://blogs.rootsweb.com/newsroom/ Joan ----------------------------------- What I am concerned about is the suggestion that seems to be coming through in this thread that my "labour of love" might be hijacked and offered only to paying customers. Can someone please reassure me on that point and maybe explain what the main concerns are being expressed here. **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. 1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] What is Filemanager for freepages
    2. Apart from the misleading Subject Title for this thread, I'm finding great difficult following what it is all about. That may be because I'm in UK (Scotland actually). Like the person who made an earlier post, I also have homepages rootsweb website which I was give nearly ten years ago as a result of making a financial donation to the original Rootsweb community. My site, my genealogical "labour of love" offers totally free access to an ongoing library of graveyard photo surveys of Southwest Scotland. Family history researchers are free to take any photos or text for use in their own not-for-profit family histories or websites. (I recently rebuilt it because of an issue with Rootsweb banners ruining my frames/tables layout. I accepted that and also accept the overwhelming arguments that using frames was 'state of the ark' HTML programming. I was more peeved that the banners appeared without due warning or explanation.) What I am concerned about is the suggestion that seems to be coming through in this thread that my "labour of love" might be hijacked and offered only to paying customers. Can someone please reassure me on that point and maybe explain what the main concerns are being expressed here. 1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] What is Filemanager for freepages
    2. Les- That's an issue you would need to take up with the USGW AB in that this was the text of the negotiated banners. Personally, I'm not crazy about the slogan no matter which way it is worded--but that is just my opinion. <shrug> Joan ----------------------- But is this not distorting the USGenWeb slogan. What I understood the slogan to be is "Land of the Free . . . Genealogy" which to many has a far different meaning than the banner version. Les **************It's Tax Time! Les, The example was just that -- an example created by someone in the graphics department -- of a customized banner with project links. I understand even the colors were under discussion. The slogan could have/would be redone by the graphics department once brought to their attention. Pat

    3. This is why I stress the need to put an index.html page in every single folder. That will always prevent people from getting access to the contents of a directory/folder. I usually put something on the page that says the person does not have authorization to that page and to write me. I provide an e-mail link. 2. Ron
    3. You know, it sure would be helpful if people would snip the unnecessary stuff out their replies. It'd trim the messages and keep us from having to read and re-read the same ole stuff. And since this is a help list, someone help me and explain why an argument about TGN, Rootsweb and Ancestry is on a HELP list? :) --------------- Ron

    1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] What is Filemanager for freepages
    2. Gotta go with Joan on this one. It states clearly that what is an "Ancestry community" is Rootsweb and not the USGenWeb. I don't think she is discredited in any way. Sharon Dulcich ------------------------------------- In a message dated 3/15/2008 9:48:04 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: John- The left side of the banner states that the page is a part of the USGW project "Land of Free Genealogy" (which wouldn't have been my choice for a slogan but the project picked that one) with links to various USGW pages. The RIGHT side of the banner says "hosted by RootsWeb an Ancestry Community." That is pretty clear to me that the site is a USGW project site and that it is hosted by Rootsweb which is an Ancestry Community. Joan --------- Joan stated, very emphatically, that the USGenWeb banner did NOT say USGenWeb was an Ancestry.com community. Here is the link to the actual image that has been developed for USGenWeb. If that doesn't say an Ancestry.com Community in the lower right, I don't know what it says. http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/custom.jpg I believe this pretty well discredits her. **************It's Tax Time! 3. John you are a silly old **** Rootsweb is NOT free I as a subscriber to ancestry.com pay for it with the rest of the subscribers we provide the cash flow to pay for staff, servers and bandwidth only the content provided by volunteers is "free" and if you look at your own hours and price your labours - it is also expensive After some squabbles on lists other RW communities have migrated to yahoo which is fiananced by advertising and has the serious disadvantage that when the listowner dies the list and board dies with him The same will apply to your new US GenWeb sites when you guys stop paying through accident or death, or by using too much bandwidth, your new sites will get suspended then deleted If ancestry / TGN makes money RW is safe my own Danish Census and Church Books : Welcome http://www.rootsweb.com/~dnkcen/index.html has now two URL with http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dnkcen/index.html working already ==================================== your own http://www.ma-vitalrecords.org/BristolCounty/Attleborough/Images/Attleborough_B170.gif needs a bigger team ================================ see http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ The FreeBMD Database was last updated on Tue 4 Mar 2008 and currently contains 146,506,668 distinct records (188,400,433 total records). On Fri 14 Mar 2008 FreeBMD users did 205,229 searches. (More information) FreeBMD is kindly sponsored by RootsWeb, Ancestry.co.uk and The Bunker. as is http://search.ancestry.com/search/default.aspx UK Census Online "Bringing YOUR ancestors to YOU, free of charge!" Have YOU ever thought of the benefit of the U.K. Census data being centrally available on ONE database, and being able to trace your ancestors from 1841 to 1891? This project aims to provide a "free-to-view" online searchable database of the 19th century UK census returns and has a grand total 12,004,909 entries and http://www.freereg.org.uk/ is an all names index of church books for England and Wales Database updated 10 March 2008: There are now 4,227,209 records available (2,360,515 baptisms, 683,045 marriages and 1,183,649 burials (c) 1998-2008 The website, its layout, search engine, and database are copyright by the Trustees of FreeBMD, a charity registered in England and Wales, Number 1096940. to which TGN is a major contributor they have a copy of freebmd which is *free to users* and runs about 3 months behind the original see the top three links on http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx the rest TGN pay for and charge for the new familysearch is in beta and also deserves support because it is paid for by church members it is also free to use The usual "I hate ancestry" individual is a bozo who signed a subscription agreement withour reading it or unsubscribed too late from a free trial offer Why do you hate TGN John? 3. I was going to drop this. Some people, just refuse to see the inevitable. I envy them their naivete and ability to put total faith in the statements of the gods. I've seen too many instances of corporations totally denying that they are planning on certain changes and then those changes come around. Joan stated, very emphatically, that the USGenWeb banner did NOT say USGenWeb was an Ancestry.com community. Here is the link to the actual image that has been developed for USGenWeb. If that doesn't say an Ancestry.com Community in the lower right, I don't know what it says. http://www.usgenweb.com/images/rootswebbanner/custom.jpg I believe this pretty well discredits her. Hugh, I don't hate TGN. I detest the way it operates. Ads on TV that make it look like you're going to put in a couple names and find your family tree back to Adam and Eve. Or, that you're directly descended from Richard the Lionheart. Constantly finding things on genealogy sites for a person to enter a name to look for only to find that the information is going to require a rather large outlay of cash. Being a member and researching a name. Then, finding them in a certain database requiring even more money to be paid out. The elderly are probably the biggest segment of genealogists. A great many of them are on fixed incomes and can't afford those exorbitant fees. It is through these current researchers that interest is generated in their descendants to continue the search for their family's roots. Other people whose circumstances make it difficult or impossible to afford high priced subscription sites. Others that can't get to a library with the resources necessary to good genealogical research. I am extremely proud to be a member of USGenWeb and helping to provide this information freely to everyone. I am a firm believer that anything that is in the public domain should be free. The time I put into all of my work has no price. It is a labor of love. Love for genealogy and history. Love for the cousins I have already met and those I've yet to meet. The great feeling I get when I'm able to help someone break down a brick wall. There is no way to put a price tag on these things. This is the end of this thread. Everyone knows how I feel. Everyone is free to draw their own conclusions and do what they feel is best for them. 2. Help...I don't know what's going on but I need some help and fast...please. I have an old homepages.rootsweb.com site, long before freepages, and because I have not used it in years, I have stored personal information on it. Ok, I know I should not have done that but in the past two days my personal information is showing up on Google...including some bank deposits...so someone has decided to spider it and publish it. I cannot get in thru ftp any longer even though I have the site name and password...please help me so I can access the homepages and get the information off it. thanks, Patty McCormack ************** It's Tax Time! 1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] What is Filemanager for freepages
    2. John- I'm only going to address the portions of your message that require additional comment--since your reply was lengthy I'm selecting the portions to quote for my reply. I do apologize for chopping your message up in my reply but it is the easiest way to reply to a few items from your post--I tried not to change the issues you were stating.... << Rootsweb IS screwed up. That is an accurate statement. Details were in the previous post. >> ------------- Anything that you might find "screwed up" wouldn't be related to the changes announced yesterday. I'm not sure what problems you are running into--but no one else is complaining about it. << I read the statements regarding Ancestry.com and Rootsweb. They are putting all the spin on this that they possibly can. TGN (The Generations Network, formerly MyFamily.com) is taking over all that they can grab onto. >> --------------- The domains you mention are all part of TGN--parts the company has built...Not sure what you mean about "all that they can grab onto" ??? << Approximately the middle of April, subject to change, EVERY page that is on Ancestry's servers will have a banner. Rootsweb will have their own banner, but it will still be on every page. This will be automatic and there will be no way to remove the banner. There is a special banner designed for USGenWeb sites. Of course, it says that the USGenWeb is a member of the Ancestry.com community. >> -------------- It doesn't say that at all. If you look at the banner it clearly states that USGW is a free genealogy project (land of the free genealogy) and the other side states that the page is hosted by RootsWeb which is an Ancestry Community. There is nothing untrue about that. Nowhere does the banner say that USGW is an Ancestry Community. << All Rootsweb sites, including all freepages and even the personal sites that donors PAID for, now have the banners. >> --------------- I have a donor site also which I paid for at one time--but since 2000 when Ancestry bought RootsWeb they have NOT charged a penny for the website and have continued to maintain them all this time free of charge. I don't think it is too much to ask that we display the small banner stating the site is HOSTED BY ROOTSWEB. << If you want to wear blinders, Joan, and not see the hand writing on the wall, that is up to you. I see this as the first steps toward trying to monopolize interet genealogy. >> ------------------- Genealogy is primarily made up of facts/data. Facts cannot be copyrighted or monopolized and are free for anyone to use--so there is little danger os ANYONE monopolizing Internet genealogy. More fear mongering. << I have already pulled eleven sites off of the Rootsweb servers. I have purchased my own domain for them. There will be about another 15 moving over the next week. There will be very few, if any, links to Rootsweb or Ancestry.com sites. Besides the URL being much better, which will help with search engines, we now have the ability to use PHP, CGI, Perl, databases and a lot more that Rootweb has not and never would provide. I also administer one of the largest free vital records projects. That was removed from the Rootsweb servers in October. It is nice to have the freedom to do with my site what needs to be done. >> ----------------- Everyone is free to decide for themselves where they wish to host their pages and where their data will be housed. If RootsWeb isn't providing the tools you need for your sites--PHP, CGI, Perl, etc. then obviously you would need to find another place for your web pages. However, that doesn't mean it is ok to speculate and state that things are going to happen that have not been announced anywhere other than in panic-filled fear emails with no basis in fact. << We are looking at list software so that we can also remove the lists we use from Rootsweb. >> ------------------------ You are free to create new lists if you like in other places...but you cannot "remove" a RootsWeb list. The RootsWeb list will remain at RootsWeb whether you choose to use it or not and other people can continue to use it. << Rootsweb is going to remain free for a time. I see it becoming just a part of the larger pay site in about two years. >> ---------------- Your statement here has no basis in fact--in fact it directly contradicts the official announcement posted yesterday on the Newsroom site. Why do you feel it necessary to post speculation with no basis in fact? Do you merely wish to frighten people unnecessarily? I just don't get why you find that necessary. 1. Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] What is Filemanager for freepages
    2. John- PLEASE check your information before posting bogus info like this to a list. RootsWeb is NOT "all screwed up." Nothing has changed as yet and the changes that ARE coming are nothing like you suggest below. If you read the announcement that was posted to the Newsroom by TGN's CEO you will know that nothing is changing with regard to RootsWeb being freely accessible. It couldn't be stated any more emphatically. http://blogs.rootsweb.com/newsroom/ RootsWeb "stuff" is NOT being moved to new servers--what is changing is the URL structure and there is only one reason for that which was CLEARLY explained in the CEO's newsroom post. The reason is a business one and has nothing to do with your data or trying to claim it or sell it. Until now, RootsWeb and Ancestry showed up on the Comscore Media Metrix stats (widely used by the business world) as separate entities and are generally #1 and #2 in their category. For business reasons it is desirable that all company sections show up as ONE single company. That is the reason for the change in URL structure. For users and webmasters nothing changes -- the old URLs and links will still work. ftp protocols for webmaster will remain the same (I just checked on that). Even the IP addresses of the servers remain the same. Joan ----------------------- We got it. Thank you. Rootsweb is all screwed up. Two different people, 2500 miles apart, using WS-FTP Pro and browser FTP and we couldn't get into the account. She had two freepages accounts and both logins went to the same account. The fileman URL worked and both accounts have been totally deleted from Rootsweb. They'll be moved to a non-Rootsweb server this weekend. It would probably be a good idea for everyone to move. TGN is going to monopolize internet genealogy. It'll probably be within a couple years and even the USGenWeb sites will be hidden behind pay-site bars. Watch what happens next week when they move all Rootsweb stuff onto the Ancestry servers. This isn't something that is done with just a few weeks thinking. This has to have been planned for quite some time. John **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. (http://money.aol.com/tax?NCID=aolprf00030000000001)
