Yes, have updated both websites. Tried several times, to index, to NO avail. Another hit, this one more serious. My search engine (WhatUseek) would not re-crawl my site. It said there were zero pages. Others have reported similar experiences with other search engines. Here is what I had to do to fix it -- short of recompiling all my thousands of pages. 1. I changed the entry point known to the search engines to the new URL. Partial success: Only the entry page (index.html) was scanned. This was because the other links (with the old URL) looked like off-site links. 2. Added the entry point /old/ URL as a /secondary/ entry point. The search engine was then able to crawl the entire site and index all pages. 3. Changed my compile procedures to use the new URL. As pages get recompiled, the new URL will be used. I rarely recompile the whole site, but as pages get recompiled, the URL change will be made by attrition. -R. Attempted to Index the two sites I maintain: www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mocharit/ and www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molinn/, as 'Tim" suggested. Received the same message as did Nan. Shall send an email to the contact listed at the bottom of the received message, under PS.... No pages on your site were indexed. This is usually for one of three reasons: a) you are indexing a password protected site and did not specify the correct authorization information (fix: log in to the Control Center, press the build index tab, click "password protected areas" enter your proper authorization information) b) your site was not on-line and operating when our spider visited (fix: get your site going and try again) c) an internet problem occurred somewhere between our server and your web site (fix: try again after a while) For a complete indexing log, login to your account at: http://www.freefind.com/control.html Press the "Reports" tab and click "View log list". Hi, If I go to the file manager then into the folder I can then upload via the file manager upload the PDF File. BUT!.... I can not create a page and upload the pdf file into the front page software. So, there should be a way to create the page as in http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~molcgdrg/facts/faq9.htm without having togo to the file manager. When you upload FP2000, you dial up, a ftp address and activate it. it uploads all componets of the webpages. because I can not locate how to get FP2000 to recognise a pdf file I can not up load it to the software... (I have tried the picture up load... because pdf is not a graphic identifier it does not see the pdf file.) I do not knowwhat else to try. Hi Nalda, Create a folder within your website directory, call it pdfs or something and save the file (email attachment) to this folder. In the web page, create a hyperlink that 'points' to this saved pdf - in the same way you'd create a link to another page in your website. Save the page and upload both the page and the pdf file to the webserver. Example: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fleming/cityark.htm the hyperlinks here are to Excel pdfs. If you mouseover the 'Bredhurst marriages' link and the 'Page 1' link and near the bottom of your screen, you'll see how similar the full addresses are . :) Ruth http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~fleming/index.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nelda Percival" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2008 6:17 AM Subject: Re: [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Putting excell spread sheet on a web page > > Ok Stupid here... > I use frontline 2000... I am not sure how it would work to put a pdf file in the middle of an html file. Maybe it would be like putting a gif or jpg on a page. Perhaps someone would know if you can do it like an image. Cynthia A PDF file can be converted into a series of graphic pages, i.e. each PDF page becomes a JPEG graphic. Each JPEG graphic can be uploaded as you would with any photograph. The same site I mentioned earlier. _www.dgfhs.org.uk_ (http://www.dgfhs.org.uk) uses this method to give an example of our Society's Newsletter. Scroll the left navigation bar to Newsletter to see the result. Excel spreadsheets pages can also be converted into HTML pages. You can see an example of this by clicking the Pedigree Charts link on the same navigation bar as the Newsletter. This conversion process is rather tedious though, you simply have to change the dot.XLS extension to HTM and use a good text editor with the Find/Replace feature to strip out all the non-html code. Front Page can now read the files as table allowing you to add bg colour and lines to the table. Sandy in Dumfries Scotland

Nelda, There isn't any special coding. Just save the document to pdf using the program (Excel, Open Office or whatever). Then upload the pdf file to the site. Link to the pdf file from another page. Hi, I use Excel (actually QuattroPro) for some things. I can do a PDF, just saving the file as a PDF file and putting the entire file up. It tends to be bulky in code, and is not easy to change without going back to the original and saving it again. The advantage is that someone will be able to print exactly the way you did it. This works easiest if your program will export to PDF. I use PDF for flyers and things that need to print with the right spacings. For most tables, though, I usually I just take the file, put columns between the columns I have and add the code there for the table. So the first column would be <tr><td> and the subsequent new columns would be </td><td> and the last column at the end would be </td></tr> Copy the entire sheet and paste it into your web page. Fix the beginning for your table and close the table at the end. I do everything the simple way using my own coding if I can, but I am getting outdated. Hi Pat, Think I really do not understand. I thought a pdf file was like a picture or anything else that was added to a webpage. I didn't think it created a web presence by itself. if it is added to a webpage how do you add it was my question when I asked about the coding... Thanks for addressing the question about PDF files. > Are PDF files allowed here? I like to use PDF files because it appears to be a quick & easy way to get my information online. However, I've hesitated because it may be less convenient for users. Are there other disadvantages to posting files in PDF format? Are there certain PDF guidelines that should be followed at RootsWeb? Shari @ BHS
