    1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] Unblock Ancestry.com
    2. S.W. Smith
    3. I need a script that will notify folks that they need to unblock javascript for RootsWeb, Ancestry, or both to view our announcements. However, the only one I have is a javascript and probably blocked. I've tried several, but they are either annoying or in the way. A simple message at the top of the page is often missed by the visitor. Any suggestions? Shari

    2. Hi all, Maybe you already know about this. But to me fototagger solved a long standing problem. http://www.fototagger.com/ This program allows one to annotate images. It is free. I downloaded it and within a half hour had two maps annotated showing the locations of an itinerant minister during his entire career. Carmen Finley Santa Rosa, CA

    2. Hi, Joyce- This would probably be a better issue for the listowners list--and spam shouldn't be copied/quoted back in your reply--it just spreads the spam message even further. That said, there isn't much list admins can do about spam that comes through from the message boards--the only way to control that before it gets posted to the lists would be for each list admin who has a board gatewayed to their lists to put the gateway address on their lists' banned list and pre-review each board message before it hits the lists. This can be a major job in many cases. Joan In a message dated 5/14/2008 7:34:07 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: This fellow may need to be put on global reject. I would also suggest you check the way the page renders in FF as two of your images are all the way at the bottom of the page. If this is a layout you are going to use more than once, I would start from scratch and set up a template you can use moving the styles to an external style sheet. If you want the page to validate, you are going to have to move at least some of the styling to an external style sheet. pat ---------- Pat Geary, Microsoft MVP - FrontPage We discuss FrontPage and Expression Web http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/frontpage/ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gearyfamily/expression-web/ Genealogy Web Design Tips and Tutorials http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/ http://www.genealogy-computer-tips.com/ - Blog

    3. Why is there a bigger space on the left between the borders than on the right? between the red line and the innermost border? the table with the "COCOCO" needs to be centered. If you want space at the top and bottom you need to set the table to 100 percent and change the cellpadding in the outer table to 5 or however much space you want. ============ And, on the little image (top of the page) in the 10% width table/box, HOW can I type ON it? if there is a way... You cant type on the image the way it is now. You would have to set the image as background for a table and set the width and height to the size of the image. change this code..... <div align="center"><table border="1" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" width="10%"> <tr> <td width="100%"><img border="0" src="images-tiles/tileequinox1_muted.jpg" width="230" height="230"> </td> </tr> </table> </div> to this <div align="center"> <table border="1" background="images-tiles/tileequinox1_muted.jpg" width="230" height="230"> <tr> <td width="100%" align="center">replace this text with your text </td> </tr> </table> </div> Mel Owings Judy Florian <[email protected]> wrote: --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! 3. I inherited my GenWeb. Often I try to re-use page setups the former webmaster used. But, I've messed up the width of the tables (backgrounds) on the first page (so the second--copied from the first--is also a mess. I need the outermost table to be real skinny. Then, there is a reddish line, and a grey line around the middlemost section (where content goes). On this page, the content (middle) is way too skinny... the outer border way too wide. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/scrapbook/ebethhs.html Before, it had been just a small sliver --less than 1/8th to 1/4th inch-- showing of the outermost border. Then, I tried using the above page to make the one below & successfully changed the bkgd image and line border color. But the borders are way too wide here, too. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pawashin/scrapbook/matthews_john-mathianas-wife-catherine-bugusky-mathianas.html Lastly, the former webmaster used blockquote to keep content in place. When I tried to delete 5 to 7 blockquotes is when the middle (content) border became real skinny. ALSO, removing the excess blockquotes ended up with a HUGE amount of white space at the top and bottom of the content area. HOW do I get that under control? Neither page validates. I'm sure if I get the blockquote stuff fixed, and the borders fixed, the errors will also decrease. Could someone have a look and tell me how to fix both pages? Also... on page 2, I'd like to keep the small table that repeats the page's background image. But, how do I put type into that little box? -- I mean, it won't allow me to type there. How do I do it? Putting your FTP client in charge of the session (PASV) has nothing to do with transfer modes for files types. text files must be transferred in ASCII mode html files should be transferred in ASCII mode, although they will usually work if transferred in binary mode. 3. Hi listers, I have a problem. Some time ago I reserved a free web-page with Rootsweb, but ill health prevented me from using it correctly. Now I cannot reach the site, nor can I get an answer from http://freepages.rootsweb.com/help.html three days later, the Email I sent came back undelivered. I wouldn't be surprised if my web site was canceled, but I don't know how to find out. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Billie Lee

    3. One other thing I have experienced is with a file name RW refuses. I have less troubles if the file name is lowercase, no spaces. Another solution, if you have a photo program, is to crop half into a new file "A" (save as). Then, go back and save as the other side to B. When you place it on your page, use a one-cell borderless table and the two pieces will go side by side. You'll need an ALT tag on both halves. If you don't have a program, maybe you could send it privately to someone on the list--I'm sure someone would help--and ask them to readjust the file. How big is it now? It's not timing out -- I can see the transfer happening, the uploaded counter updates constantly, but it suddenly simply stops and I get a red message in the FTP log that there's an error. Everything is _exactly_ as it was a few weeks back when I successfully upped something...except because these files were so big I disabled the the firewall and anti-virus (since I didn't feel like spending 45 minutes doing it. I created a "web version" of the images, and tried upping one of them -- at 7 minutes and 28%, it disconnected my FTP connex. That type of error almost always means there is something on your end that is causing the connection to time out. First, be sure you have set your FTP client for PASV (passive) transfers. Increase timeout settings in your FTP client to the maximum. Then check your firewall, blockers, accelerators, and or security utilities for timeout settings. If you are using a web accelerator for browsing, turn it off, and be sure any firewall or security settings give the server (RootsWeb) permission to access your computer. FTP requires 2 connections: a command channel, and a data channel. You need to configure your "protection" software to allow access to your computer by the server. Pat
