It appears fine to me in both browsers although the line spacing is a bit different. List Helpers, I have a page that reads fine in Explorer but in Firefox it reads Chinese. It validates in Firefox without any error warnings. But in Explorer it has some warnings about background color. I don't see anything in the code that would make it read Chinese. Can any of you see what the problem is? http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mobarry/School-Book/o-index.htm Have a Merry Christmas! Donna Cooper

Judy, Good luck on learning the sideshow. I want to learn about dwt but will ask about that on the ew list. I only have three more counties to convert to xhtml and will finish that by Jan 1. I know I should be using a template. I do that but keep it in my mind not on a web page. My problem is, as I go along I change the layout slightly to something that I like better. I use the web site on the server as my backup. I also have an Old copy on my computer that I never change just in case I have to go back to it to find a missing page. CB J.A. At 02:16 PM 12/23/2009, you wrote: >http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nma/sierra/tierra_blancacemetery.htm ============= Charles, if you plan on moving to Expression Web which is a much better web editor than any version of FP, then take the time now to learn the program. You will need to have some background in writing css and html - at least the basics - to make full use of the program. Think about how you want your site to look - the basics, header, footer, and most importantly a navigation system. Develop a basic template and style sheet. If you start using a external style sheet with a dynamic web template, in the future your site will be much easier to add to and maintain. I gave you some resources earlier which also include Tina's free Expression Web DWT. Once you have developed your dwt, then you can begin cleaning up your content and attaching the DWT to the clean content. Some samples you can use are here http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ew-templates.html or you can develop your own. You might want to join a list that is strictly for EW. There is one that is part of my signature that is a rw list however it is NOT very active. Or try this one http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/microsoft-expression-web/ which is NOT Rootsweb specific. My Thanks to All, Judy, Pat, Tina, for the great suggestions. I will join the EB RW list as suggested. I do not care to join other lists off of RW. I have fixed that page. Hi Charles, About the easiest way to fix errors "en mass" is, first, take one item reported as an error. Second, look at the code in several of your pages. See if you can identify something COMMON either right before or right after the place where the code needs changed. For example, I use Frontpage 2000 and it uses charset=windows-1252 in the HEAD. I needed to change it to charset=iso-8859-1 So I opened Edit>Replace and put charset=windows-1252 then in Replace With I put just charset=iso-8859-1 I didn't need to use the entire line of code, just a piece that had the same sequence or placement for the code. I bet many of those 10,000 errors have some "exact" sequence like my example and if you can identify one, it will be easy to do Find>Replace. If possible, stop the "search" after it finds 20 or 30 instances...change those...upload...make sure everything is okay with that change. Then do another set of pages. In Frontpage2000, the user has to click to OK every item changed, but I think someone said EW will do global. If I can sit and hit OK hundreds of times, anyone can do a replace with better software. :-D Don't try to do it in one day, but set smaller goals. Run a validator and copy/print the error list (or just part of it). Look over the list and after looking at the code on a few pages, mark just a few errors on the paper list-- ones you can identify as the easiest to change or that can be an automated Find/Replace task. Think about how many pages you have and set a goal for each day (example: do 20 pages each night to fix JUST ONE error). Then, get a cup of coffee and complete your goal. Don't forget to reward yourself afterwards--- stretch, get a snack, take a walk, watch a TV show, anything to clear your head from all that work. If you have a big site, it will take time but the satisfaction is worth it. When you get 1 error fixed, cross it off the paper list and pick another one to work on. The closing tags will be the worst because it will likely be all manual work. :-( But you can tackle the ones that Find/Replace can fix, and worry about the other errors next. Hi, One FTP program sees files on RootsWeb but another doesn't. They are jpegs. Any suggestions? George
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nma/sierra/tierra_blancacemetery.htm I bought Expressions Web 3 as an upgrade to FrontPage2007 with the goal of changing all of my code from html to xhtml and to change all of my tables so fire Fox could read them equally as well as a MS Broswer. I have been working months converting the web site. The more I use EW3 the more I dislike it and have gone back to FrontPage for most tasks except for making truly new pages. EW3 appears to make far more work than I can accomplish. The web page http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nma/sierra/tierra_blancacemetery.htm looks fine on both Fire Fox and MS I.E.8. But like on so many other pages, I have left in code errors, probably exceeding 10,000 errors in the web site. This page of current interest displays code errors from EW3's code checker. For Instance, it says "the center tag was not closed before this </boby> tag" And several "the center tag was not closed before this <tr> tag." as in this displayed code error: <td class="style8" style="width: 20%"><strong> </strong> </td></center> </tr> I leave these code errors in because I can not fix them. Is this program not suited to convert old html to xhtml and code so it is compliant for all browsers? (Note: Some Data in tables can not be read by Fire Fix Browsers because FrontPage includes a code that tells browsers to ignore the text if it is not formatted. If the table it uses the default FrontPage format, then FireFox can not read it. The solution is to get rid of Themes. Which I have done completely for all pages. Since I got rid of FP Themes, Fire Fox users report they can read all of the data. So I am not dreaming and that is also what a programmer told me to do. That just leaves a few other code errors that must be fixed like justifying all cells LEFT so all browsers read the data the same.) I hope this does not sound like gibberish. I know what I know, but do not know how to say it clearly. Charles

There's an eight-hour delay in there, between different Rootsweb servers - if I'm interpreting correctly. Perhaps email is suffering the same fate as snail mail at this time of year - bogged down by festive mail/transactions/etc? Or dealing with an increase in spam or something else that has slowed it down temporarily?
