    3. Judy, The "balloon notification" only tells about the wireless connection from your computer to the router. It doesn't tell you about the service. My notebook also pops up the balloon occasionally. I'm not sure why. Most likely there was a burst of interferrence (from any number of sources) that momemtarily disrupted the connection or it may just be reconnecting after a period of inactivity. If your balloon opens repeatedly throughout the day you may have an appliance or somethng near you that is causing a periodic burst of interferrence. The best way to check the actual internet service is to look at the cable modem lights. In general if the "Cable" "Online" and "Power" lights are steady on the service is connected. If one or more of them are blinking the service was dropped and is reconnecting. Under normal connected conditions the "Ethernet" light should be the only one blinking. There may be some differences depending on the specific modem but most cable modems work this way. Pages loading quickly after a (sometimes very long) delay can have many causes, including the above. Many of these causes are outside your ISP's control. Identifying the exact cause may be very difficult. Jim Rickenbacker ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.A. 3. We all know those "balloon notifications on the Windows Explorer Toolbar. For example, one balloon might open to say that you have an Internet Connection and the quality of the signal strength. Well, I want to know the kinds of reasons that a balloon would open to tell you (repeatedly throughout the day) that you have an Internet Connection and the quality of the signal strength is excellent. My ISP and I have been fighting for years about repeated drops of service. I contend that the balloon notification would not continually open to tell me I have an Internet Connection, unless the service drops out and comes back (thus, the balloon opens). Am I right? Note this is not the only "symptom" of being dropped; the notification is just one reason I know the connection was temporary/intermittently dropped. For example, I can be "on" a web page and ask to go to a different page...but it doesn't load fast... then, the notification pops open...then the page loads fast or loads if I do refresh. I had plain wireless, modem only--- lots of signal problems. They put in a router with the modem. It hasn't helped much. Therefore, the ISP contends that "something" must be dropping the signal between the modem and computer. Note: I am less than 3 feet from the modem and router. Previously, I was 8-10 feet away, direct line of sight (no obstacles), with the same symptoms occuring. We also tried a hard-wire directly to the computer. I contend it is not a problem with my computer because this is the 4th laptop over the past 4 to 6 years, and with each laptop (different manufacturers) the intermittent problem has remained the same-- some days better, some days worse. Any ideas? Any ideas for how I can prove to the company that it is their problem/ their equipment dropping the signal? Judy

    3. Whenever I have this problem, I switch to my gmail account and all is well ... yet you're using gmail so I have no clue as to what may be causing this - But I'd be willing to bet it's at the ISP level. If you're using your gmail to circumvent this, then knowing your ISP might help someone on this list to help you. If yours is Comcast - the only highspeed available to many outside the large metropolitan areas in the U.S. - then the problem is them ... no matter what modem you have, the speed will only be at 8MB because they refuse to up-date their wiring ... if you switch to satellite for television service, the satellite folks will switch the wiring to highspeed - & free to you - so you may enjoy their service ... this may work for internet service as well yet if not recommended by them - as here - I would advise following their advice. This leaves us 'up a creek without a paddle' ;-) Good luck, On Fri, Jan 15, 2010 at 9:31 AM, J.A. If you want to distinguish her name on that page yes, you would need to apply a style or change the color of the font. That particular page also needs a title at the top of the page. <TITLE></TITLE> is empty. 3. Thanks Jim, It was encouraging to hear someone else was successful. Naturally it didn't work for me. Turns out that Skype had taken port 80 and my default web page never appeared Told Skype to get off of 80, killed Skype in task manager. Then my web page came up just fine. IIS is supposed to support SSI and CGI. How about SQL? (Never used CGI or SQL-- are they the same thing?) And thanks for the warning about firewall... it was ok. George p.s. is there a way to "turn off" IIS or do you just stop the web sites? 3. George, If Vista works the same as XP, you can stop IIS by going to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Internet Information services. Expand the tree in the left hand pane and you will see Default Web Site. Right click on Default Web Site and select Stop. Use the same process and select Start to restart. I'll answer your other questions off-line as we are getting pretty much off-topic for this list. 3. Nelda, Sometimes Frontpage2000 gets "buggy" and acts contrary. A longer method (versus the short way Pat G. described), is to create a folder under My Documents and move out anything not being used to a My Docs/unneeded folder. Then, in a 2nd folder in My Documents, move out of the web folder any BIG files, if you've got any. I usually move out jpgs because they can be on the larger side. Fp2000 often gets buggy about what's added to a page, not with the htm or html pages themselves. It's also easiest to re-link a jpg than to have to re-link a bunch of pages. Try opening the web again with Fp (but don't change any page). If it now opens, close it again and try moving back just one of the files you moved out (ones you still need) and see if it re-opens. If all is OK, keep repeating the move-in process till it's all back in. Once you have moved back all the "needed" files, and Fp still opens ok, then do recalibrate. Note: if you move something out then back in, it shouldn't break the original links you had to that item. I've "fixed" so many "problems" with Fp2000 just by moving a few files out then back in. I jokingly say that Fp2000 gets "confused", like it is a very elderly human with a brain and emotions (LOL) because Fp *does* get confused and contary sometimes. 3. Hi George, I've installed IIS on all my personal computers beginning with Win-98 up to XP. I use IIS for testing web pages before uploading. It's handy for that purpose. I've not migrated to Vista but IIS should be pretty much the same. You will be safe with IIS as long as you have a firewall installed that prevents incoming access. Do not install IIS unless you have a firewall! The Windows firewall will be fine but I prefer and use Zonealarm Free. The URL for your computer (from your computer) is http://127.0.0.1/ That is the local IP address. http://[YourComputerName]/ (without the brackets) should also work. The computer's external IP address will be assigned by your ISP (or your router if you have one). You can find out what that is by typing "ipconfig" at a command prompt. 1. [ROOTSWEB-HELP] About changing subject lines
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. We've all heard it before, "Change subject lines when replying to Digest Mail". "If you get single message E-Mails, seeing a long list of new E-mails with only digest numbers gets aggravating and isn't informative." We've all done it: hit reply to or reply to all and not review the Subject Line. Reasons this happens include: 1. People don't normally read backwards. Our eyes saw the Subject before we opened the mail and our eyes focus only on the blank space where we type our reply. We learn to read top to bottom, right to left. So, blame how our brains and eyes work. 2. Some E-mail programs (gmail is an example) doesn't show the Subject Line on a reply unless you aim your pointer at one short link to open the mail's top. So, blame your E-mail program. 3. We just forget to look 'up' and check the whole E-mail, as we'd do if holding a newly typed letter on paper. So, blame technology's influences of "type 'n go". Maybe "Send" should be a 2-click process of "Review" then "Send". Possibily by the next generation, we'll have re-trained human's brains and eyes to work better with these newfangled computers. And maybe computer developers will find better designs for E-mail heads. I always say I need a secretary. If I had one, I could blame him for not (re-)checking the Subject Line on each E-mail. :-D Judy

    3. It would help if the people replying to this thread, whatever it is about, used a descriptive subject instead of referring to a digest number that is absolutely meaningless to those of use who subscribe to individual messages.

The last-modified date of the page is one of the variables available when you use server side includes. You're seeing something which uses the system date, which is also accessible via SSIs but not what you want in this case. -- Bob Sullivan Schenectady Digital History Archive <http://www.schenectadyhistory.org/> Schenectady County (NY) Public Library
