No, I typed it in and did that about a dozen times, also shutting down and reloading my computer with the process. List Readers, My FTP server is down, or anyway I think that is what the problem is because I can upload manually but not with FTP. I get a message that my user name or password is not correct, but that can't be the problem because I can upload manually to the directory. I thought some of you might know what the problem is or how to correct it - if so please drop me a note. Donna Cooper

Genealogical/Historical societies are allowed to sell memberships and publications, but the above statement sounds like you have a "Family Association", which would be on Freepages. Selling anything on Freepages is not allowed. OTOH, if your society was approved as a lineage society and is located on the WWW server, then the agreement for Gen Societies applies. Pat Asher

But I don't see why saying "have to pay dues" would be against the AUP. To me it's the same as saying things like: (examples) The author has sold her book online and privately. (No price mentioned.) I found a copy of that book on online. Just Google for "rare book" web sites. (No price or specific website mentioned.) The genealogical society sells reprints of the 1880s maps. (No price mentioned.) When I last visited the historical society, they charge a cover fee and charge if you make copies of their materials. Court Houses must charge for the copies, even if you do your own research. (end of examples) Others may disagree with me, but I don't see a problem with saying a Society charges a membership. In fact, on a RW site, your statement may even be considered as providing local resource information. Judy
There are only a few rules that apply to free space at RootsWeb Upload no copyrighted material, except with permission. Upload no GEDCOMs or other pedigree-related material. These would take up too much space and should be uploaded to the WorldConnect and then linked to your web site. Upload no commercial material. The "no commercial material" rule is flexible, especially in the case of Genealogical Societies. You may go ahead and sell memberships, books, and research services. The account belongs to the Genealogical/Historical Society. If a webmaster resigns, the account password will be reissued to an officer of the Society upon request. Affiliate links (those commercial links that pay you for the folks that click on them) may not be included on your site. You may only link to official MyFamily/Ancestry affiliates only with written permission from the TGN affiliate program. Please don't use your RootsWeb space as a "dump" for material that won't fit on your main site elsewhere. Such practices can create a serious support problem for RootsWeb -- it is difficult to know if the site is still active , people accessing the site with an incomplete URL don't know where to start, etc. If you must split your site between RootsWeb and another server elsewhere, please maintain a main page on RootsWeb, preferably an index.htm or index.html, that provides access to the material hosted in the RootsWeb account, and links to your main page elsewhere. In addition, do n ot use RootsWeb space for a redirect page. An acknowledgement that RootsWeb is hosting your site would be appreciated. Is it safe for me to assume that I'd run afoul of something in the AUP if I said on an RW website: "you get to be a member of the _family_ by being born, but to be a member of the _Society_ you have to pay dues." The confusion between "family member" and "Society member" is growing daily, and my membership chair is getting tired of spinning his wheels looking for membership/dues records on people who never paid up. (g) In case it matters -- not that I can see why it would -- Annual dues are $6. I spent more'n that yesterday for lunch at the Colonel's. Cheryl

Hi Nan, Many people disagree about counters. Some people still like them but other people say they don't add much value to a webpage. Counters are only accurate on the page where the counter sits; it doesn't count people who entered on a different page. You can use Google Tools for webmasters and get more accurate counts. Or, Freefind and Pico send reports about numbers of visitors and what each searched for. It will give you much more information. If that is not available to you, you could sign up for a Google account and use Google Analytics which will also give you more info than a site counter. http://www.google.com/analytics/ Pat Pat Geary, MS MVP Expression Web ============ http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ http://www.expression-web-tips.com/

I noticed today that I have a folder/dir "above" or outside of my public_html directory. I can see it via Filezilla. When I first started 3 yrs ago, the former webmaster fixed it when I accidentally uploaded outside of my public dir. How do I fix this new error myself? Do I just click on the misplaced directory in Filezilla and delete that folder from the Internet side? I have a print screen image if anyone needs to see what I mean. Judy
Windows Live Movie Maker that was designed for use with Windows 7 does not allow the addition of narrative. However, I discovered that Windows Movie Maker 2.6 that was designed for XP (or maybe Vista) will work with Windows 7. At least I was able to make a little six slide test movie show by importing images and adding narrative on the time line. And then I burned a DVD. HOWEVER, when I played the DVD, I discovered that two other slides, from a different program, had inserted themselves preceding the first slide in my movie. The two inserted slides were dated with the current date, not with the date I had burned them. Does anyone know how I can get rid of these two pesky slides I do not want? Carmen Finley Santa Rosa, CA
The server seems to recover by itself after a long interval, until the next time it falls over on this problem. So if it happens to you, try again later -- like in an hour. -R.
