I have a document index section on my site at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace . We tried several options over the years but settled on this format. 1) We have a link from the home page to a document index page: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace/docind.htm On that page, we have a link for UK records and two inactive links for Canada and Australia (the primary non-US locations for our surname) plus a link to a US map. At this time, we don't have a lot of non-US records added so the UK link goes directly to a directory bin where we upload the images. If you click on the UK link, you'll see a subdirectory of "wars" and in it is a document. 2) For US records, the link from the page above goes to a US map. I've directed this off the rootsweb server because it's an image map done in FrontPage and Rootsweb doesn't support Frontpage extensions. This page has a clickable map with each state listed. You can click on the state or the hyperlink below from this page: http://www.iredell.net/us_map.htm 3) If you click on a state such as NC, you'll be directed to a NC genealogical links page that contains general NC research links http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace/states/north_carolina.htm >From that page, you link to our photo and document directory. You'll see various folders within that contain photos and a corresponding text file to explain the contents of the photo. As you can see from this URL - http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lovelace/us/states/nc/ - the URL is long, but makes sense. Once at that link, you just cruise around in folders that make sense for where you are going. We've broken it down further by counties and type of document. After several years of trying other ways, this works best primarily because a html page doesn't have to be created for each photo or document uploaded as they are put directly into that directory. For all you genealogical webmasters, this is a huge plus. My site is over 40,000 pages and I almost never have any time to spend on it anymore. Others can upload directly to those directories even if they have no web page experience just by teaching them about ftp. Also, I have instructions on how to send me the pictures and files so that if I get new material, it's all formatted and all I have to do is upload rather than spend an hour figuring out how to link it to the rest of the site. As far as CuteFTP; all you have to do is make the remote directory the homepage of your site and upload from there into the folders. Generally, you shouldn't go more than a few levels deep in website design. However, when it makes sense, creative directory use with a few more clicks is a simple filing system that works for even massive sites like mine. I'm curious, does anyone know of other really large single surname sites on Rootsweb? I'd like to compare with others on how they manage big sites. My query sumbission form on my USGenWeb sites quit working last week. They have been working for the last three years. Has Rootsweb suddenly changed something to break them? The form is located on a non-rootsweb server, but that has worked fine until now. The error message I get is given below: Bad Referrer - Access Denied The form attempting to use FormMail resides at http://web.raex.com/~cweese/vinton/subquery.htm, which is not allowed to access this cgi script. If you are attempting to configure FormMail to run with this form, you need to add the following to @referers, explained in detail in the README file. Add 'web.raex.com' to your @referers array. I have numerous pages with links to jpegs rather than to web pages. Most have behaved properly, but I have several that will not work as they should. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~cannbfam/PostCards/PostcardIndex.html Here is how the page work, and how it was made. 1) I used Netscape composer to make the page, and have checked the source codes with NoteTab Pro. 2) The html page, and the jpegs are all in one directory. 3) The links are made by browse and click - with a relative link, so there is no chance of typos creeping in. 4) Of the 45 links made, all but 5 or 6 work properly. pc004.jpg pc005.jpg pc006.jpg are three that will not work, and as far as I can see they are identical to the rest (They work fine on my hard drive, but not on the web.) "Solutions" I have tried - - - I have reinstalled both the page and the images, plus I have tried a full link rather than the relative one. I have cleared my cash. Turned my computer off, then again cleared my cash. I have checked (using my ftp program) to make sure the identical files are where they are supposed to be. There seem to be no conflict with the case of the text used between the link and the jpgs. I'm stumped - any suggestion? Cleadie B.
Re naming your directories. Use the two letter code for the state, and if you want to subdivide the state, make two letter codes for the Counties, etc. (or three if they duplicate). As for making the subdirectories in freepages, just click on the main heading you want to use (history, genealogy, etc - and use the "make new directory" usually found under file - I am not familiar with WS_FTP) I wish Rootsweb had used fp for freepages. It would have make life a lot easier. :-) Cleadie B. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack & Addie Morrissey" <cuznsrus@mindspring.com> To: <RootsWeb-Help-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 30, 2000 8:14 PM Subject: Web Page Question > Good evening, > Perhaps one or some of you will be able to assist me in this. > I recently got space from rootsweb free pages. Good evening, Perhaps one or some of you will be able to assist me in this. I recently got space from rootsweb free pages. I use the WS_FTP to upload. The web site I am doing is for a surname. The listers want photos of the ancestors placed on the site. But because the URL is sooooooo long and rootsweb has all those files listed in the right column of the WS_FTP I am not certain how I can create a directory. My goal is to create a directory for each state and place the photos in the state desiginated. My main page is index.htm. How can I create it so that I have my main page address then link to a state? In the Colorado USGenWeb I maintain the photos site there. That link is http://www.rootsweb.com/~cophotos/index.htm and if someone wants to look at Archuleta county the link for that would be http://www.rootsweb.com/~cophotos/Archuleta/index.htm TIA Addie
Perhaps I am missing something, but I cannot see that any messages of my little list have been archived. So--can someone steer me in the right direction of these, if there are any stored? Or how to begin archiving messages, if I missed that boat. thanks, Maggee Smith Saint Domingue "List Mom"

I believe Norton SystemWorks has to be onboard with NProtect on **before** being infected with the Love... viruses. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.loveletter.a.html says: Additionally, users of Norton Systemworks will be able to recover these files if NProtect is running at the time of infection. NProtect works with the recycle bin in which it stores copies/images of files for a specific number of days which can later be restored even if the files have been trashed and the recycle bin emptied. Soooo I suspect it is too late for Norton SW to help you. I certainly would check further with Symantec before getting Norton SW just for this purpose. I have NSW onboard and find it the most useful Utility program(s) I have ever used!!! We have used versions of Norton Utilities and now Norton SystemWorks 2000 for over a decade. That is the Love Virus and you do not get anything back. When i had it the only way to clear my system was to clean my whole drive and start over again. I lost every photo I had, and it hurt especially in my Family tree maker program. Some I can never retrieve. Recently a friend sent me a message that had a attachment that turned out to be some mpeg v*irus. Now almost EVERY jpeg photograph I have in this computer has the annoying .vbs as extension. I already had virus clean up. Reported back no virus (it's because I don't use MS Visual Basic, rather none of the MS products except Windows 95 OS. Everything else not a MS product. Hi Sandy and all, I try to delete spam without ever opening it, but sometimes I delete good stuff or I miss some of the junk and open it anyway. Instead of fretting over the spam, I just forward the whole darn thing to TOSspam and hope AOL deals with it. The only problem with restricting access in "preferences" from these spam morons is that they use so many different screen names. I NEVER respond to them because they are looking for addresses that confirm they are real -- then the REAL floodgates of spam begins. Just my .02. For those of you who have multiple screen names and need to upload via WS_FTP or whatever, take note of HOW TO, because AOL doesn't give out the best instructions - if you can find them at all! Make sure you sign onto AOL first , especially if you are into "bring your own access." I use these inputs: Host Name: members.aol.com Host Type: automatic detect and Anonymous Login User ID: anonymous Password: screenname@aol.com MUST be the one you have already signed in on then if/when you change and want to upload to another screen name's space, go back to AOL and switch screen names FIRST. Example: Password: kygenweb@aol.com up load and then I go back and switch screen names on AOL and return to FTP and sign in with Password: scottcomuseum@aol.com and so on. I keep all my sites set up by some rememberable name, so that all my rootsweb sites are readily distinguished from my 5 AOL screen names, and I can upload to whatever space I have using the same old WS_FTP that I've used for years - and the info is readily accessible. WS_FTP is working great for me, too.
