    2. Hello, I am trying to help a Historical society in a small town organize death notices they have in newspapers dating fron the 1870's to present. I have typed out names and dates for death notices fron 1891 to 1920 so that researchers can find family and know that they can receive a copy of the death notice available throught the historical society for a $1.00 donation. I have never tried to make a webpage before, and I am doing this to help the society, if anyone knows of a good book, please let me know. And please I need something for real "dummies"!!! The problem is...I know how to prepare the the typed portion and add the html to it. What I am looking for now is backgrounds for the pages. I hope no one will mind me asking really dumb questions, I will have aton of them. Terry

I'm not on AOL so can't verify it, but her test message to me came through as text. She included html code for a link which was visible when the message came through to me. It did not come as an attachment. "You go to the top menu marked "settings" and when you click "preferences" you get a window of items to set preferences in. Choose "mail" and make sure that your mail options marked "show white headers" and "show addresses as hyperlinks" are NOT checked. That's all I did, and it worked for me." 3. I have no problem with Netscape since I am using it. (it's 4.75) No problem agains ince Netscape 3.04. It is the EXTENSIONS the FrontPage has been using that is problemic. The extensions are arbitarily included in FrontPage. I had to purge the excessive coding within the html pages sent to me from others before I can upload. FrontPage is notorious for BLOATED pages. 3. Hi Murray, First, I was not paying attention to the address when I used the reply function. I would not have posted this to the list as, regretfully, it is a religious war discussion. Nevertheless, I do owe you the courtesy of a reply. My message, below, says that Netscape does a far better job of complying with Internet standards than does AOL or Microsoft. There are two ways of not complying with standards (1) don't implement a function required by the standard (2) implement lots of proprietary functions in addition to the standard so that interoperability is limited to the lowest common denominator. While everyone in the industry, including me, would agree that case 2 is "more acceptable" than case 1, in reality case 2 does more short-term harm than good. Long term I would agree that case 2 often leads to evolution of the specifications. I believe that an important aspect of any discussion involving Microsoft has to begin with the acknowledgment that the company has been legally determined to be the largest proprietary software monopoly in the world. The truth is that Bill Gates vastly underestimated the growth potential of the Internet and essentially left his company with its pants down in the front lawn. When Marc Andreesen created the first graphical interface to the Internet, the Mosaic browser, he created a revolution that frankly created panic within Microsoft. Most everyone is aware that the fate of Netscape was the cause of the Department of Justice filing an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft. I do continue to accurately assert that Netscape initially was the driving force behind the W3/IETF HTML standardization. I can also future agree with you that after Microsoft realized what Netscape had invented it decided to throw enormous financial and technical resources at every possible way to beat Netscape and drive it out of business. Again, this was the basis for the antitrust lawsuit. You are correct that after Microsoft exercised an enormous economic muscle it placed more representatives in the W3/IETF standardization efforts than anyone else could afford to match. Consequently, Microsoft did rapidly, and with malice and forethought, put both the people and resources in W3/IETF to drive the process and to implement what they had successfully paid to have adopted. Netscape is no longer in business, having been absorbed into AOL, so certainly you correctly assert that Netscape began to fall behind after the worlds largest declared monopoly decided to drive them out of the business that Netscape's own creativity had started. I do believe, however, that I may correctly assert that if compliance with standards is measured not only in terms of what mandatory functions are implemented but also in terms of how closely a product stays to the standard, as opposed to creating proprietary based interoperability problems, then my assertion that Netscape continues to be more compliant with W3 specifications stands. At this point it is clear that you know all of my arguments and that I know all of your arguments. May we agree to allow both "religions" to exist peacefully and leave this discussion for more productive ground elsewhere? Cheers, Jason Murray Pletsch wrote: > Hi Jason: > > > I agree with your observation that Netscape > > does a far better job of complying > > with Internet standards than does AOL or > > Microsoft. 3. Can anyone tell me why gif files will not show up on my webpages that are on my local hard drive? When using images on my webpages if I use jpg files they will show up when viewing the pages on my local drive, but gif files will not display. However, if I upload webpages and images to my Freepages site both gif and jpg files will be displayed properly. This happens every time I use gif files and it is not a matter of typing in the file names correctly or having them in the proper directory. Any help appreciated. pc

If you are not on your own Accept list, even you will not be able to post. Hie thee over to thy Tools page, click on the List Files tab, and select Accept List. Add your address, and anyone else on the list you trust to post, one address per line, no names, no punctuation. Remember to click Submit Changes when you are done. > It worries me that the subject says {not a subscriber}. Did the List receive > that message or not? No, it didn't, David, and you won't be able to fix that until you are on the Accept List. {Not a Subscriber} messages are actually bounces, as you will see if you open up the headers. Best of luck, Valorie

    3. Now what a silly discussion for otherwise intelligent people to engage in. First, it accomplishes nothing by blocking an address because anyone who wants to read the postings can simply resubscribe using the same name via any of the thousands of free email sites on the Internet. A list manager would have no way of knowing if a particular person is really gone or is continuing to receive and post information under another email account and for this reason it is a waste of time to install a filter on an old email address for your personal account! Additionally, it is not even necessary to subscribe to read what is being said on a particular list because all of the messages are available to read via the rootsweb archive. Lastly, and most importantly, if you do ever actually upset a user by pretending that a listmanager is an all powerful god the end user has access to the direct email address for all of the "vocal" subscribers to a list by simply going to the archive and copying them down and building his/her own mailing list that bypasses the rootsweb completely. It is really a shame that otherwise non-technical people are on this list displaying how little they actually know about how Internet technology works. Rootsweb: the place where lots of lights are always on but hardly anyone at all is ever home. Have a super day! 3. First, realize that FrontPage components don't work on Rootsweb as they don't have extensions installed. Assuming your site doesn't have those, open CuteFTP and click on site manager. Click add your site and put in your site's name as the label. Under host address, put freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com. Your user ID will be mylists and your password will be whatever you've set up. Under "initial local directory" click on the little folder icon and browse through your folders until you get to your rootsweb files. Your final results will look something like this: C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\mylists. Then connect and upload your files! Let me know if you have specific questions about any of the steps; I use both CuteFTP and FrontPage for my Rootsweb site of over 40,000 pages.
