Just click on file and save page as "html complete". Old graphics in the folder don't have any relationship with load time as long as your page no longer references them. Space always costs money, though, so if you're not using the images anymore it would be polite to others who share the expense of the Rootsweb servers to delete them from the server. Your html code can cause pages to load slowly if it isn't optimized, but if you notice a difference at different times of day, it's likely traffic or modem connections causing the slowness. If your html code no longer mentions the old graphics, they aren't being loaded and consequently won't cause slowness. I suggest two options: 1) If you're on an IBM-PC compatible computer, you can download NetMedic at www.vitalsigns.com - if you install this freebie from this site, it gives you some idea why things are slow (your computer, the net, or the server you're connecting to) 2) You can run your site through an html validator. There are many sorts of those. The ones that I tend to use are on these web sites: www.websitegarage.com www.netmechanic.com http://validator.w3.org/ http://watson.addy.com/ Some of them will tell them when your pictures are too big (well, according to their standards...) Good luck! Gloria ---------- At 09:35 AM 11/29/2000 -0500, you wrote: >What is the best way to handle old graphics that you no longer used on >your web page? What is the best way to handle old graphics that you no longer used on your web page? I have uploaded new web pages and changed the backgrounds on several of them. The old backgrounds are still in my folders and was wondering if that is why my web page is becoming slow about loading. I live on the east coast and between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. they are very slow, but in the morning before 7:30 a.m. they load extremely fast. Would that have something to do with the traffic on rootsweb? Doris http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahchs/
If you have Netscape as your browser, it comes with Composer. Composer will open html files from your computer. Make sure the graphics are in the same file, or the path defined to them. Then the html will read in the graphics. I use composer and notepad to create my websites. Gordon, How did you upload your files? Are you familiar with ftp? I'm not familiar with the Betsy's Really Basic help. You need an ftp client (unless you have a PC with the FrontPage version that came with Windows 98) to up and download. Go to http://www.download.com and download any ftp program. I use Cuteftp. After you install it, you'll need to connect to your files on Rootsweb. To do this, you click on "add site" and then name your site (site label) something like Morris or genealogy or rootsweb. Then put in the host address which is http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~gamorris . Your computer is the local; theirs is remote. You should have your user ID and password from Rootsweb. Then connect and find your index file (or others) to download. Read the help information to learn how to download more than one file at once. You need a place for the files to go when you download. What will you be using to work with .html pages offline? You can download to your hard drive anywhere but you need to remember where you put it. When you go to upload the changed file, you'll want to set your local settings to pull directly from that folder to save you time in the future. If you've never done this before, it sounds much more complicated than it is. Take it one step at a time and you'll be working in a couple hours. Please write personally if you need help with any steps. well the easiest way is to make a folder on your hardrive to contain your web site, then with the click of the mouse it is easy just place your mouse over each and everything you want to save background , page image whatever with the mouse over it click your right mouse button and use the save as Belle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gordon Alan Morris" <gamorris@hawaii.rr.com> To: <RootsWeb-Help-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2000 2:20 PM Subject: Downloading Home Page from Rootsweb > Hi Listers, > > Using Betsy's Really Basic Help to create my very rustic homepage, which > is highlighted in the URL below. I went out to your site. The name of your query graphic is query.gif. If the graphic file is out there, I should be able to see it independently by typing http://www.rootsweb.com/~wirock/query.gif is the address box of the browser, and see the graphic. I did that - no graphic. I also ran it through http://www.websitegarage.com/ and that site indicated that these were failed links (meaning they couldn't find the graphic files.) Is your graphic name spelled differently? Or is it in a sub-directory? You might go out with FTP and look for the various graphic files, and note where they're located and what the names are. If they're not there, copy them out again (indicating a binary copy, not text).
